VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern Munchen - Bundesliga Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images It seems we’re back on track. Vincent Kompany’s attacking philosophy has come under fire this season, and while not the same caliber of opponent, Bayern Munich managed to bounce back from its defeat to FC Barcelona with a resounding victory over VfL Bochum. After the match, Kompany (via @iMiaSanMia) spoke about the flow of the game, saying, “It was a game we took very seriously. We lost here twice in the past three years, so there was no underestimating of the opponent. We conceded a big chance in the first half but I liked the fact that we stayed calm. Bochum were ready, pressed us high and went for the duels. They made a few fouls but as an ex-defender myself I can appreciate that. We did our job from the first to the last minute. I’m happy with the result and the goals. We just want to continue like this.”Bayern will look to carry the highs of this performance into their next string of games. With matches against Mainz, Union Berlin, Benfica, St. Pauli, and Augsburg on the horizon, the team from Munich should have sufficient time to solidify a working system before facing Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 5-0 dismantling of VfL Bochum, plus some talk about why Max Eberl could be on his way to losing the fan base? VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images We’re glad you’re back, Jamal. Bayern Munich will have needed a victory following the 4-1 drubbing experienced midweek against FC Barcelona, and luckily the team was able to bounce back against VfL Bochum. Starting on the bench against Barca, Jamal Musiala played a key role against the Bundesliga bottom boys, capturing both a goal and an assist on the night. After the match, Musiala spoke to DAZN (captured via @iMiaSanMia) about the night’s proceedings, saying, “It was a good game. It wasn’t always easy for us here in the past few years. We want to make a step forward with every game. We want to score as many goals as possible, keeping a clean sheet was also important. We can be happy today. We want to take the momentum into the coming games.”Musiala also commented on his goal, a rare header from the midfielder from an incoming Joshua Kimmich free kick, saying, “I made eye contact with Joshua and went for the header. It’s cool to score a header because it’s not a strength of mine.”While the result against Bochum is positive, the fashion in which Bayern won is ultimately meaningless if the team cannot transfer its form from games against smaller Bundesliga sides into success against teams like Barcelona.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s 5-0 dismantling of VfL Bochum, plus some talk about why Max Eberl could be on his way to losing the fan base? VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Ralf Ibing - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Bayern Munich did what it needed to do... Bayern Munich visited VfL Bochum and took care of business, though it was not in an overly convincing way. Dominant? Yes. Convincing? Well...it was poor competition, so it is tough to say. At least Bayern Munich did what it needed to do. At this stage, the Bavarians should overwhelming an overmatched side like VfL Bochum, but that did not happen. Let’s dive into with with this combination Bavarian Podcast Works Postgame Show / Flagship Show: A look at the starting XI.A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.Bayern Munich dominated, but had a couple of lapses. FC Bayern München v VfB Stuttgart - Bundesliga Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Let’s forget about the Champions League, at least for today. After the crushing disappointment of losing to FC Barcelona in the Champions League, Bayern Munich return to action on the road against VfL Bochum. It used to be that, after a major loss/draw, this team could bounce back and hammer whichever opponent came up next. That kind of mentality has been missing in the last few years, particularly since Hansi Flick left. Now that Vincent Kompany has well and truly been humbled for the first time since he took this job, he’s going to have to prove that he’s still the right man to take this team forward. That starts with this game vs Bochum. It’s Bayern time. While you’re waiting for the game, why not check out our preview podcast? SV Werder Bremen v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Bayern Munich vs. VfL Bochum…are you ready? Eberl still wants Tah (@Plettigoal)There are some conflicting rumors floating around on whether or not Bayern Munich still wants Bayer Leverkusen center-back Jonathan Tah. According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl would still like to bring in Tah. Would Tah represent an upgrade to the team’s center-back core? Eberl might think so...or he might just want another option for depth: ⚫️ Jonathan #Tah still plans to leave Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer in summer ✔️

Leverkusen bosses also do not expect him to extend his contract.FC Bayern, with Max Eberl, remain interested in the centre-back, but there is no clear indication from the player’s side yet. Talks are ongoing.Bringing in Tah to what some consider a volatile situation at center-back likely will not help things. Tah has not been as good this season as he was during the 2023/24 campaign. At his age, there is no reason for Bayern Munich to think he will ever be anything more than he already is (which is not good enough to be what the Bavarians need). De Bruyne to...San Diego? (@tombogert)Could Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne be interested in a move to...San Diego? Oddly enough...yes: San Diego FC have had talks with the camp of Manchester City superstar Kevin de Bruyne about a potential future signing, sources tell GIVEMESPORT.De Bruyne prefers a move to MLS than Saudi Arabia if he is to leave City, sources say.Talks are preliminary, but there is mutual interest from both sides, sources say. Rumors suggesting San Diego offered de Bruyne a salary of $20 million per year are not accurate, sources add. It is far from advanced.Any negotiations would not be for this winter as de Bruyne remains a key figure for Manchester City and the timeline is not yet specified. De Bruyne’s contract is set to expire next summer, per an official release from City, but there is the chance that de Bruyne remains at City beyond that contract.Sources say Manchester City are keen to keep de Bruyne at the club as well.San Diego’s connection to de Bruyne dates back to May, when sources said de Bruyne’s camp spoke with the MLS club to gauge potential interest.Though de Bruyne’s preference is MLS, he has also had contact with Saudi dealmakers, sources say. Saudi Pro League sporting director Michael Emenalo would love to bring him to Saudi but is yet to receive encouragement despite rumors of advanced talks over the summer. A deal with Al-Ittihad, where Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante play, was never close or likely.A couple of things about this rumor: Who wouldn’t want to move there? Greater San Diego is awesome...Carlsbad, Oceanside, Del Mar...great, great places. As a fellow pale boy, De Bruyne might want to invest HEAVILY in sunscreen. Can I say anything bad about San Diego?Hmmm...well, they did allow some of their people to do this travesty: Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show Season 4, Episode 15 (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich ran the gamut of emotions from “We’re back!” during a 4-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart to “Oh, no!” after getting dismantled 4-1 by FC Barcelona in the Champions League. So, we are here to address all of it and why waste any more time in bantering? Let’s get to it. This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Weekend Warm-up Show: Where can Bayern Munich go from here? What should fans feel good about. Yes, Bayern Munich can run the table in the Champions League — League…
Sepp Maier’s 80th Birthday Special Exhibition Opening Photo by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty Images The vibes are higher and there seems to be more belief amongst the Bayern squad now than there was last season. Even without crediting Bayer Leverkusen for the amazing feats they reached under Xabi Alonso last season, Bayern Munich’s season under Thomas Tuchel was well short of satisfactory despite nearly making it to the Champions League final at Wembley. There was simply no sugarcoating the fact that it was the Rekordmeister’s first season in over a decade without silverware, and to add to that, it was on the heels of a season where they just barely stumbled to lift the Meisterschale, thanks in large part to mishaps from their direct Bundesliga opponents. By a certain point after the winter-pause last year, it had become evidently clear to even the most casual of Bayern spectators and followers that Tuchel had lost a portion of the dressing room. More importantly, it had become clear that he had lost the backing of the supervisory board and the front office, who knew it was time for a change after the conclusion of the season. Vincent Kompany was nobody’s first choice to replace Tuchel at Bayern, but board member for sport Max Eberl has insisted that the former Burnley and RSC Anderlecht manager’s name was always on a short list of candidates. Now, he has Bayern poised in the Bundesliga at the top of the table, though they have already lost twice in the Champions League.Even with the two European blunders, former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has noticed a positive uptick in the atmosphere in and around the club compared to last season. It could possibly be taken as a slight, indirect dig at Tuchel, but Rummenigge was more concerned with focusing on the current positives he sees right now. “The atmosphere at FC Bayern has improved a lot. It’s fair to say that it wasn’t good last year. With the new coach, a really good atmosphere has returned because he’s doing a good job. Not only are we currently top of the table, but the quality of the game is also good. That’s the most important thing. And the quality has returned to the level that we had during our incredibly successful years,” he explained to DAZN (via @iMiaSanMia). VfL Wolfsburg v FC Bayern M¸nchen - Bundesliga Photo by Jürgen Fromme - firo sportphoto/Getty Images To Rummenigge’s point, Bayern did not necessarily perform poorly, per se, in their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa or their 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, or their 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, but the recent 4-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League was perhaps the outlier in that sentiment. They were well and truly outclassed by former Bayern and Germany manager Hansi Flick against the La Liga giants, but that still does not take away all the good we have seen thus far under Kompany’s management. There is still plenty of time to get back into a good spot in the Champions League standings and there is nothing to suggest that there will be an implosion of their domestic form any time soon. Kompany has the full backing of the supervisory board and front office and will continue on trying to guide Bayern to a far better finish than last season.Looking for more talk and analysis on what is going on with Bayern Munich? VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern Munchen - Bundesliga Photo by Rene Nijhuis/MB Media/Getty Images Kingsley Coman scored a great goal for Bayern Munich... Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman got the starting nod from Vincent Kompany and made the most of it with a second half goal. However, the Frenchman was not enthralled with the team’s performance in the first half, which was good, but not great. “The start of the game was tough but we kept going and worked hard. We played with a lot of pace, which worked well today. We have to look ahead and carry on,” said Coman as captured by @iMiaSanMia). ”We’re doing a lot of pressing, which of course works well when you have strength like today. Defensive vulnerability? When you press and attack with numbers it’s normal to have fewer players at the back. We have to be ready to work as a team and track back.”Coman’s role on the team is in flux. Bayern Munich tried to sell him over the summer, but could not. Now, he seems to be getting a vote of confidence from head coach Vincent Kompany, which could help bring out the best in him.If not, he could be back on the chopping block as early as January. VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala celebrates his first and Bayern’s second goal against Vfl Bochum with teammate Michael Olise. | Photo by Ralf Ibing - firo sportphoto/Getty Images Bayern Munich showed a strong reaction to blow Bochum out the water. Bayern Munich had a point to prove against a VfL Bochum side who find themselves in an extremely difficult moment having sacked their manager while sitting at the bottom of the Bundesliga with just one measly point.Nonetheless, Bochum had pulled off a victory against the mighty Bayern in their last encounter at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, so there was every reason to believe it was possible. Unfortunately for the home side, a vengeful Bayern proved to trump belief. These were the main observations.Kim Min-jae’s positioning remains a problemKim Min-jae has been prone to the occasional lapse of judgment in defence throughout his tenure at Bayern Munich. At first glance, a few defensive errors could have been forgiven. After all, having to learn a new system and adapt to a new league can understandably cause players to make mistakes. However, in Kim’s case, it seems less like a few mistakes and more like a nasty habit. The Korean centre-back was caught napping in the 9th minute as Bochum sent a simple through ball over his head to unleash Moritz Broschinski, who managed to poke his shot past a rushing Manuel Neuer. The shot looked destined for goal but Kim managed to use his pace to clear the ball off the line.Sure, Kim did well to recover and ultimately prevent a goal, but against a better side he will not be afforded the same opportunity (i.e. Barcelona). Call it a system or individual error, Bayern needs to solve the constant lapses in defence or they will continue to be punished in future. Bayern’s set pieces were fantasticDespite dominating Bochum in the first half, Bayern’s chance creation was underwhelming. Whatever creativity was lacking in open play was channelled into set pieces, though.Bayern’s first set piece goal came in the 16th minute from Michael Olise- The winger curled a beautiful free kick over the Bochum wall and into the net. The Frenchman has certainly pinned his named on top of the list of free kick takers. Bayern’s next set piece goal was a smart, quickly played cross from Kimmich that found Jamal Musiala who tucked a glancing header past Patrick Drewes and into the back of the net. Bayern may have lacked some initiative in the first half; however, it was good to see that Die Roten can pose a threat not just in open play, but in set pieces as well.Don’t be fooled, Bayern Munich is not fixedAll respect to VfL Bochum, but this is a game that Bayern were never going to lose and the result should not overshadow the glaring issues in this Bayern Munich side. All things considered, The Bavarians have had a good start to the season under Vincent Kompany, but the real test for the Belgian coach was always going to be the big games, of which, they haven’t won one. It’s great to be able to blow mediocre teams out of the water, but at Bayern Munich, that is not enough. Vincent Kompany still needs to prove that he can translate good performances against poor teams into good performances against great teams. Nonetheless, you can only beat what is in front of you, and Bayern certainly did that convincingly. So, credit to Kompany and his side for showing a positive reaction after the thrashing at the hands of Barcelona. Great goals galore If you were not able to catch the game, do yourself a favour and watch the highlights. All five goals were, in their own way, a spectacle to witness. It felt as if the goals were a small apology letter to the fans after Tuesday evening’s disaster in Catalunya. Apology accepted.

VfL Bochum 1848 v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images Some reaction, huh? Jersey Swap: Ibrahima SissokoVfL Bochum did not put up much of a fight. Bayern Munich effectively dominated the game from minute one to ninety, which is reflected in the stats. Therefore, choosing a player for the jersey swap wasn’t easy — it’s hard to pick someone that stood out. In the end, it was Ibrahima Sissoko who caused Bayern the most trouble out of the Bochum roster. The Malian midfielder played to the right of Bochum’s center, attacking the space between Alphonso Davies and Kim Min-jae. He was often a nuisance to both players, his pace leaving them scrambling to get back to defend. In the end, Sissoko’s efforts didn’t amount to much — but he did make his markers feel uncomfortable.Der Kaiser: Alphonso DaviesIn the last three years we’ve rarely had games where Davies has locked in, but this definitely counts as one of them. The Canadian dominated his flank with ease, making it practically impossible for Bochum to play freely down their right hand side. He also had an assist for Kingsley Coman in the 2nd half. However, if we’re being honest, he didn’t have much to do with it. It’s not the assist that made him good in this game, it was everything else. Fußballgott: João Palhinha Palhinha only played sixty minutes, but in that time he showed that he’s got the dawg in him. The stats may not show it, but there were periods in the game where Bochum managed to regain possession and actually try to do something. The reason that those attempts didn’t get very far was because of the Portuguese midfielder. Unfortunately, Kompany still seems hell bent on using him as the advanced midfielder while Joshua Kimmich stays deep. Surely this can’t be making the best use of his skills. Der Bomber: Kingsley ComanKingsley Coman didn’t exactly set the pitch on fire, but it was still a the kind of workmanlike performance you can appreciate. He never stopped running, never stopped trying, and that goal he scored might be one of Bayern’s best of the season. Frankly, the attacking players didn’t do much outside of scoring. In that sense, Coman had the most complete performance, aside from one other player. Meister of the Match: Jamal MusialaJamal Musiala is back, and it looks like the rest did him a lot of good. He’s moving more freely, seems far more engaged in the press, and his assist to Harry Kane was wonderfully orchestrated. The best part is that he didn’t have to play the full 90 minutes, which means he’ll hopefully be fresh for the knockout game against Mainz in midweek. FC Barcelona v FC Bayern München - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images Have I got news for you, Kalle Vincent Kompany’s brand of football has been put in question this early in his tenure, with some terrible results justifying that. The Belgian had a great start with Bayern Munich but stumbled against half-decent teams which put the entire team under scrutiny. Despite that, certain people Karl-Heinz Rummenigge downplayed that notion, which happened to be before Bayern’s Champions League match against FC Barcelona.“I don’t necessarily see it that way. If you play the style of play that Vincent, has you playing, you press high”, KHR said (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “That also applies to the two centre-backs That’s why Manuel Neuer is usually 40 meters away from the goal. You’ll always concede a goal that will annoy you. But our team is willing to learn, and Vincent is on the path with the team to improve these things. At some point, that won’t happen anymore, I’m convinced of that.”To be fair, he’s right; Bayern just don’t have the personnel at the back keep things together.Looking for more talk and analysis on what is going on with Bayern Munich? England Training Photo by Eddie Keogh - The FA/The FA via Getty Images Big games, big goals. Bayern Munich star Harry Kane is still on the hunt for his first trophy. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker and England men’s national team captain had the misfortune of having his first season in Bavaria overlap with Xabi Alonso’s invincibles season at Bayer Leverkusen — Bayern’s first season without a Bundesliga trophy in 12 years. But Kane is already setting his sights even higher. “Of course I want to get to the final and win the Champions League title,” Kane remarked in a Sport Bild interview from the beginning of October(as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The Champions League is the biggest competition. If we somehow get our hands on the trophy, it would be a fantastic season, even more so if we won it in the Allianz Arena. It will be a tough journey, but one that I am prepared for. These games are always the big games. The atmosphere and the fans are always unbelievable.” With the Final taking place in Munich next May, Bayern and Kane are on the hunt secure home field advantage.About that trophy, though..after a loss to Aston Villa and a thrashing at the hands of FC Barcelona, the Bavarians are going to need to shape up soon — or get shipped out at the league phase.

1. FC Düren v FC Bayern München - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images/DeFodi via Getty Images The wait to see Itō’s debut grows longer...but not by much Bayern Munich’s Hiroki Itō is nearing a return from a broken foot, having lost the last 3 months to injury following on from his move to the Bavarians from VFB Stuttgart. Some tentative reports before the international break even estimated that he would be fit to return for Bayern’s game against VfL Bochum, ready to finally make his debut around 4 months after he first signed for the club. However, journalists captured the Japanese footballer suffering a setback as he worked on his recovery during the international break and being unable to finish his training. He was then unable to make it into the matchday squad for the match against Bochum. But head coach Vincent Kompany took steps to assuage any fears: “It’s normal for a player who had surgery in pre-season. Sometimes you go a step backwards to then make two steps forward,” Kompany explained, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “It was nothing bad and won’t change much for him.”Though the setback has slightly delayed the former Stuttgart player, Kompany gives hope that he will be available sooner rather than later. Good things come to those who wait. And if Bayern fans have waited four months for Itō’s debut, surely it is possible to wait just a little longer.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against VFL Bochum? Holstein Kiel v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Marco Steinbrenner/DeFodi Images via Getty Images Part of football is maintaining the patience and belief in oneself to take opportunities when they arise... Bayern Munich’s João Palhinha was always going to have a lot of the media’s attention, considering the failed move from Fulham FC to Bayern in 2023 and the year-long transfer saga that was born of this failure. But even his harshest critic would likely expected a little more involvement from him than what he actually got before the Bavarians’ clash with VFB Stuttgart, as Aleksandar Pavlović and Joshua Kimmich kept him frozen out of the first team. But once, Pavlović had to come off the field in the early minutes, Palhinha admitted in a recent interview that he knew it was his chance:“The opportunity that presented itself to me was going through my mind. At that moment I was lucky that the coach [Vincent Kompany] called me. I was very happy because I knew that this would be a big chance for me,” Palhinha admitted, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.“It was important for me to always maintain the same focus and workload. The fact that I haven’t played recently doesn’t mean that I’ve done my job wrong. I just don’t think so. I always give it my all - sometimes it works out well and sometimes it doesn’t. But I’m here to fight for my chances and achieve good things like I did [against Stuttgart].”Now it is time for the Portuguese to take that big chance with his bare hands. Following a difficult run of form, Bayern needs players to step up. Palhinha has signalled his willingness to do so, now he will need to follow through.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against VFL Bochum? U21 Estonia v U21 Germany - UEFA Under21 EURO Qualifier Photo by Ville Vuorinen/Getty Images Just make sure Anthony Taylor does not referee any matches... During the international break, Germany’s U-21 team was invited to train at Bayern Munich’s training ground, the Säbener Straße. While the team was there, Bayern used that time to hold a quick interview with out-on-loan Frans Krätzig, which they posted on their official website. In the interview, among other things, Krätzig spoke about his excitement regarding the U-21 European Championship, held in June of next year. The interviewer sat down with the youngster, who turns 22 in January, initially congratulating Krätzig for Germany’s qualification for the 2025 Euros before asking if the ability to be at next year’s tournament gives him a little extra motivation for this season. The VFB Stuttgart loan player, however, preferred to focus on the success of the team.Krätzig: “We’re delighted to have qualified. Our goal was to finish first in the group. To have achieved that before the last matchday is something special. Now we’re going to give it our all to earn a place in the tournament. We want to show what we can do. We want to prepare well so that hopefully something big happens in the summer.“Next, the interviewer quizzed Krätzig on what was it like to come home to Munich again, having spent the majority of the year on loan at either Austria Vienna and Stuttgart. “It was very nice to be back at Säbener Straße in Munich. I caught up with a lot of people again. The conditions here are also fantastic.”The interviewer then asked whether training at Bayern Munich’s training ground gave the team an extra boost. It would not be a Bavarian interview with at least a little earned self gratulation, would it? But Krätzig did not deny that training at the Säbener Straße was certainly beneficial:“Of course, we’re professionals and have already trained on many training pitches or in different stadiums. But I also heard one or two people in the team say that it was something special. I can imagine that there was perhaps a sense of awe among some of them and that it was something different to - without wanting to sound disrespectful - training in a sports centre somewhere in the Munich area, for example.”While the German national team has now reached a drought of over a decade without a trophy, Germany’s youth sides have demonstrated a real knack for winning trophies. The U-21 are no exception, having won the 2021 edition of U-21 European Championship. Now Krätzig and Co. are looking to take another crack at it and succeed where the senior team failed.Looking for more thought on a potential move to FC Barcelona for Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies?
