VfL Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund - DFB Cup: Round Two Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images Round of 16 here we come! The draw for the DFB-Pokal Round of 16 has just finished and there are some tasty matchups in store for fans about to tune in to those games. For Bayern Munich, they got their newfound nemesis: a Bayer Leverkusen who is worlds apart from their 2023/24 selves but still no pushovers. Other draws can be seen here:All DFB Pokal Round of 16 fixtures
Games will be played on 3 and 4 December pic.twitter.com/kmqNaAUaJL— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 3, 2024Leipzig get Frankfurt, while Freiburg get Bielefeld and Werder Bremen play former Bundesliga side SV Darmstadt 98. Karlsruher SC drew Augsburg, 2023/24 Bundesliga runners-up VfB Stuttgart travel to Regensburg. FC Köln host Hertha Berlin, while Hoffenheim pay Wolfsburg a visit. As is the story with national cups, lesser sides are not to be underestimated so teams like SV Darmstadt 98, Karlsruher SC, and SSV Jahn Regensburg can all pull off an upset. On the other hand, the rest of the Bundesliga heavyweights should have enough power to dispatch the other team; Bayern-Leverkusen is definitely one to watch out for.Do you have predictions for this round of the Pokal? 1. FSV Mainz 05 v FC Bayern München - DFB Cup: Round Two Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images First his golfing career ends, then he needs to leave Bayern? Poor Dier is giving up a lot of things... Eric Dier’s time at Bayern Munich has certainly been a rollercoaster. He was put under intense scrutiny from the minute he arrived and initially fulfilled the role of backup CB, only for him to start to gain erstwhile Bayern head coach Thomas Tuchel and bizzarely become the Bavarian giants’ most important defender as the club faced Arsenal FC and Real Madrid, reaching the Champions League semifinals with Dier, someone who Tottenham Hotspur had more or less banished from the squad, at heart of it all.Under new head coach Vincent Kompany, however, his game time has fallen off a cliff again and, according to the frustratingly inconsistent news outlet BILD, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, he may be offloaded upon the end of this season:Eric Dier is likely to leave Bayern when his contract expires next summer. After having played an important role last season, he hardly plays a role under Vincent Kompany. The Englishman is not particularly well suited to the current system due to his lack of speed. On one hand, Dier has, indeed, struggled for game time even as regulars Kim Minjae and Dayot Upamecano have come under serious scrutiny. On the other hand, finding a center back willing to be fourth in the pecking order is always difficult. Will Bayern struggle to find someone with the requisite quality again?

FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images ‘Time, time, time, see what’s become of me.’ Time comes for even the best of us. But for Bayern Munich’s legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, that time is not yet.The 38-year-old is still Bayern’s undisputed No. 1, with no clear successor in the wings: his deputy, Sven Ulreich, is 36, and the goalkeeper-long-in-waiting, 28-year-old Alexander Nübel, is perennially on loan with his future in Bavaria uncertain. But recent slip-ups by Bayern — notably a 4-1 Champions League debacle at FC Barcelona — have cast Neuer’s performance and his recent save percentages into the spotlight.Neuer remains defiant — of time, as well as of his critics.“I haven’t paid any attention to the criticism,” the keeper stated after Bayern’s 3-0 win over Union Berlin on Saturday (as captured by Sport1, via @iMiaSanMia). “It’s always about the quality of the chances when it comes to the goals we’ve conceded. That’s why the stats don’t matter for me at all, but rather each situation on its own. I think I’m in good form.”It was another clean sheet for Neuer and Bayern — fourth in the last five games — and Neuer didn’t have particularly much to do in this one, with Union getting just one shot on target. But he made the most of his opportunity to shine, as that shot was a good one. Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano’s headed defense of a Union cross snagged unluckily at the feet of teammate Raphaël Guerreiro, still in the box, and Union’s USMNT striker Jordan Pefok latched on to fire a ferocious at Neuer. The towering keeper showed that even at almost 39, he still has the reflexes and steel of his best days for Bayern and Germany.Still, the stats do not paint Neuer in the best possible light:Manuel Neuer's save percentage throughout his career [ @SPORTBILD] pic.twitter.com/xdveFhvCeL— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) October 30, 2024Does the underlying shot quality vary that much over the years? Well, perhaps — the dip in 2018/19 coincided with Niko Kovač’s ill-fated Bayern reign and recovered the following year, shared by Kovač and Hansi Flick, in a season where at least in the Bundesliga Bayern conceded the same amount of goals. The shifts up and down in the years following could have as much to do with team performances and playing style changes — from Hansi Flick to Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel — and Neuer’s low mark in 2024/25 is, of course, an incomplete number. But Neuer’s heyday from 2012/13 through 2016/17 was also something to behold — save percentages staying consistent and north of 79.5% throughout — a run the likes of which we may scarce see again.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s dominant 3-0 victory over Union Berlin in the Bundesliga? Bayern Munich - 1. FC Union Berlin Photo by Tom Weller/picture alliance via Getty Images The Moroccan teenager might be Bayern’s fallback plan at left back. At a big club like Bayern Munich, fans often become more intrigued by the potential of a young player than the known quality of a veteran. In rare cases, the club can provide the best of both extremes. In this weekend’s 3-0 win over Union Berlin, Adam Aznou made his first appearance for the Bayern senior squad by replacing Alphonso Davies in the 80th minute.“Alphonso is my role model,” said Adam Aznou (via @iMiaSanMia). “When I wasn’t subbed on recently, Alphonso told me that I was on the right track and that I should keep working on myself. He’s really a big help to me. I want to keep getting minutes, fight for a place here and, above all, win lots of titles.”Aznou has quickly worked his way up through the Bayern system, earning nine appearances at the U17 level in 2022/23 (8 starts), 15 appearances at the U19 level (13 starts), and primarily playing the Bayern II squad in 2024/25.When Davies joined Bayern back in 2019, David Alaba served as his primary mentor. Five years later, Davies is happily paying it forward to the next generation.Looking for more thoughts and analysis on Bayern Munich’s dominant 3-0 victory over Union Berlin in the Bundesliga? FC Bayern Munich Training Session Photo by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty Images Is this really how it’s going to end for Davies in Bavaria? Bayern Munich is navigating several major contract extensions with star players on expiring deals at the moment. But while things look promising in the case of Joshua Kimmich and perhaps even Leroy Sané, the waters are far more murky for Canadian international Alphonso Davies. The left-back is enjoying a bright start to the 2024/25 season under Vincent Kompany, who has also spoken glowingly about the 23-year-old. But big clubs — Real Madrid and Manchester United — are circling, and the contact who may be most important to getting a deal actually done, Davies’ agent, could be a sticking point. Here’s the less-than-promising report from Sport Bild chief Christian Falk, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:Bayern don’t want to speak to Alphonso Davies’ agent Nick Huoseh at the moment. They’re interested in keeping in touch with the player himself, but a potential new deal is getting more difficult. Real Madrid ‘really want’ Davies and are still the favourites to sign him on a free transfer. Manchester United would have a chance if they’re willing to meet Davies’ financial demands [@cfbayern via @caughtoffside]Could Davies really depart for Real Madrid — or even the Premier League?
