Bayern Munich youngster Paul Wanner’s international future has been the subject of many, countless rumors. But the player clearly is struggling to decide which of Austria or Germany to represent. So far, Austria and head coach Ralf Rangnick have been the ones in close contact with Wanner, trying to convince him to join the dark side the Euro 2024 Round-of-16 participants. So far, Wanner — on loan this season at FC Heidenheim — has resisted a call up to Austria’s senior team. But now Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who gave Wanner his debut at Bayern Munich back in 2022, has reached out to Wanner and offer him a spot in the Germany squad. But @iMiaSanMia captures a report stating that he was turned down as well: Paul Wanner has rejected a Germany senior call-up for the upcoming Nations League games this month, much to Julian Nagelsmann’s surprise. Wanner wants to continue playing for Germany U21s for now, giving himself more time before making a final decision on his international futureAlso, @iMiaSanMia captured a follow up report, adding more detail to the conversation between Wanner and the former Bayern Munich coach: Julian Nagelsmann called Paul Wanner on Tuesday. In an appreciative conversation, the coach wanted to use the call-up to show Wanner his prospects for the 2026 World Cup and give him the chance to get familiar with the team. Wanner was happy that Nagelsmann had him on his radar. In the end, however, he decided to continue with the U21s and play the U21 Euros in the summer as one of the key players in the team. In addition, he wants to continue to prove himself in the Bundesliga and wait until next year to make a decision about his international future. Austria is still an option for him.Beyond the signals Wanner is sending to both Austria and Germany with these rejections and the obvious debate about which country he eventually chooses, one has to wonder if Wanner may have missed the boat here. Nagelsmann has shown his willingness to experiment with new players, but he is also very willing to move on from them if they do not take their chance. If Wanner was not even willing to join the squad this time, how much patience will Nagelsmann have for him in the future?

Bayern Munich found a way in the end and notched a 1-0 Champions League victory over SL Benfica that, despite the result, was less than inspiring.But the result is what matters, and the Bavarians can breathe at last. After two UCL defeats, they now have two UCL wins — and Portuguese clubs are not here to play about, as Sporting showed yesterday with a storming 4-1 victory over Manchester City. There’s much to celebrate here — but also much to talk about.From the bad, then, to the good. And a look ahead.Does Bayern Munich have a plan?You would be forgiven for thinking this was a dead rubber match, like Bayern was not coming off two Champions League defeats, sitting 24th in the table, and in serious need of securing three points. Bayern played with no venom and the bare semblances of a plan.For large stretches of this dull and vapid affair Vincent Kompany’s men circulated the ball pointlessly among themselves — possession without apparent intent. Players standing on the ball, scanning for options only to find none, and cycling it back. A half-promising dribble only to be cut out by the poorest of touches or a pass straight into a defender’s body. Slide rule pass attempts through a compact 5-3-2 Benfica setup when Bayern’s measurement equipment was clearly broken.Harry Kane eventually began to take it upon himself, darting through the press and firing shots from long range or odd angles, under more pressure than he was probably well prepared to deal with. And so Bayern ended up with oodles of shots on target, but very rarely did they do more than sting Ukrainian keeper Anatoliy Trubin’s palms.A lengthy passage near the half-hour mark typified Bayern’s night. Serge Gnabry managed to get some space in the box, then scuffed his chance. The ball fell to Jamal Musiala, who tried to dribble through about six defenders; he lost the ball. Benfica didn’t appear prepared to ever take extended possession themselves and Bayern kept getting it back. Konrad Laimer darted in behind eventually to create one of Bayern’s most incisive attacks of the night...but his cut-back, from a dangerous position, found only Argentine defender Nicolás Otamendi.Laimer was one of Bayern’s most industrious attacking presences on the day, but his 59th minute snatched shot — blazed a mile wide and several miles high from close range and under no pressure — just begs questions of where Bayern is deploying its resources. Watching the German men’s national team under former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is a remarkably different experience. Nagelsmann has always made hay, with heralded attackers or not, flexing lethal attacking patterns and carving out space in behind even with a minimum-width approach to the field. Bayern has, what? Individual brilliance? Tight space tricky dribbling? Much risk it, where’s the biscuit?Football is a delicate balance. As Hansi Flick showed Bayern in his time here, and again last month in FC Barcelona colors, taking defensive risks is justified when the attacking impetus that causes it is overwhelming.But while Bayern appears to be counting on some Musiala magic in tight spaces — and the young German superstar does often deliver — or Harry Kane screamers, it certainly looks like a disciplined enough defense can play this initiative to a stalemate. Benfica coach Bruno Lage’s men managed that for most of the game, and in the frequent moments where Bayern’s attacks fizzled out...it was air raid sirens on the counter.Runners waiting to pounce off the shoulders of Alphonso Davies, or long balls over the top to challenge Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano, whoever was last back. Vangelis Pavlidis took a nice touch on the volley straight around Kim and looked about to go the distance before stumbling. The club is yet to find the perfect and permanent replacement, but Alexander Nübel could very well be the one. Nübel proved his prowess and skill as a keeper not too long ago, before being loaned out to AS Monaco for two seasons to develop even further. At Monaco, he proved to be quite the goalie, holding his own against the likes of Kylian Mbappe in Ligue 1. He returned to Bayern Munich, but was immediately loaned out to VfB Stuttgart. Alexander Nübel has definitely made the same mark at Stuttgart, with reports of the clubs satisfaction with his performances. According to Dennis Bayer (captured by @iMiaSanMia), Stuttgart is definitely interested in renewing his contract to make him stay until 2026. Their satisfaction in his performances and potential to be a leading player is what prompts their interest. However, this entirely depends on Manuel Neuer’s future at Bayern. The clubs number 1 keeper is (arguably) showing signs of slowing down, and they might need to replace their legend very soon. Bayern Munich’s Champions League win over SL Benfica was unfortunately the sight of tragedy. A medical emergency occurred apparently just three minutes into the match, which had separately been delayed by fifteen minutes.Via FCBayern.com, the fan who suffered the emergency died on the way to the hospital:FC Bayern’s 1-0 win over Benfica in the league phase of the Champions League on Wednesday night was overshadowed by sad news as a medical emergency in the crowd at the Allianz Arena clouded the game from the start. Out of respect, the Südkurve refrained from their usual vocal support of the team, and the club also reduced its coverage of the match.Around an hour after the game ended, the club received the sad news that the fan had passed away en route to the hospital. FC Bayern is in mourning alongside their relatives.A somber reminder that life is as fragile as it is precious. All of our thoughts are with this member of the FC Bayern family, and the loved ones they have left behind. Rest in peace.

It wasn’t until Jamal Musiala got a goal, which sort of redeemed his rather bland performance, and Bayern’s position in the league table. Other players were deserving of shoutouts, but who exactly?Jersey Swap: BenficaThe Portuguese team defended as a unit and were deadly on the counter. Bayern did just enough to snuff out any threat but at any given moment it looked like Benfica were about to nab a goal. It is worrying that Bayern can’t get past half-decent teams when (on paper) they should be beating these teams with ease.Der Kaiser: Alphonso DaviesAnother member of the defense would be nominated for a different award, and with Davies consistently offering an attacking threat (and drawing a foul that prevented Benfica’s goal, sparing Manuel Neuer’s blushes) he gets the nod here.Honorable mention: Dayot UpamecanoDer Fußballgott: Joshua KimmichHarry Kane played so deep he might as well be in contention for the midfield awards, but because he hasn’t done much, he’s not winning it either (story of his career so far). Kimmich, despite playing deeper than João Palhinha, played a lot of forward passes in this match. Despite him getting bodied off the ball and his corner kicks questionable at best, he’s had a bigger impact than Palhinha who looked like an NPC tonight.Der Bomber: Leroy SanéTo be honest, Jamal Musiala played poorly apart from his goal. Kane, who was credited with the assist, didn’t do a lot either in this game. It would therefore seem unjust to hand Der Bomber to any of them. Besides, it’s for the attacker with the biggest impact and that is none other than Leroy Sané. Setting up the move for Kane and Musiala to combine and notch the only goal in the game and getting through Benfica’s compact defense with ease compared to his peers, his contributions were bang on.The 28-year-old German was kept from the starting XI for a while to recover from his niggles and, boy, did he deliver on his return. With Serge Gnabry playing like he’s part of 2015/16 West Brom and Michael Olise being hit or miss, Sané is making a strong case for starting games. Hopefully he can play more than half a season.Meister of the Match: Kim Min-jaeIn a period where Bayern played troubling and had (almost) nothing to offer up front, Kim has stepped up after a tough run of games for him. This game had a Benfica goal written all over it, but the Korean defender stood firm and did not let Os Encarnados through in any shape or form. The 28-year-old defender did enough as Bayern got a goal in a hard-fought battle. Well done from him.

I know it’s difficult but it’s not impossible. Bayern are an excellent team, very strong, and when they play at home they will want to take control of the game from the start. Benfica will have to be strong defensively and try to do as much as possible to prevent Bayern from scoring early in the game,” Gomes told Tz’s Philipp Kessler (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). ”Bayern press and defend high. Kingsley Coman was close to leaving Bayern Munich for Saudi Arabia towards the end of the summer transfer window, but the French winger ultimately decided to stay with the Rekordmeister and take his chances under new manager Vincent Kompany. His current contract with the club runs through June 2027, but his market value has taken considerable dips in each of the past two seasons, thanks largely in part to the injury struggles that seem to have persistently plagued him ever since he joined Bayern for good after a loan spell with Juventus.So far this season, the French winger has tallied our goals and two assists from 12 appearances across all competitions, the majority of which have come as a substitute. Kompany has shown a preference to his preferred starting four in attack being Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Serge Gnabry, though he has utilized his fair share of rotations across all competitions, especially during the English Weeks.More recently, Coman has earned starts in the Bundesliga wins over VfL Bochum and Union Berlin, as he was an unused sub in the DFB-Pokal win over Mainz in between the pair of league wins. He scored once against Bochum and provided a goal and assist in the win over Union Berlin.After the most recent win against Die Eisernen, Coman spoke highly of the way Bayern is currently playing, having won three matches on the bounce after the 4-1 Champions League loss to Barcelona. “Things are going well at the moment. Kingsley is back where he is - he’s healthy. He’s doing his part to ensure that we’re successful,” Eberl stressed. For the time being, Kompany is spoiled for choice with the different winger and attacking options he has, but a lot of Coman’s decision-making in the future could come down to how often he is playing. Much like Gnabry, who was also a candidate for sale in recent transfer windows, he is making the most of his opportunities, so from the club’s point of view, it is worthwhile to keep him until they find a reason to start thinking otherwise. Benfica coach Bruno Lage has his squad ready to take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League. “We expect a tough opponent (Wednesday), a very competent team, but I also think they see us in the same way,” said Lage (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Regardless of the number of points every team has, it will be a very interesting and competitive game, with both teams looking at their opponent and seeing how difficult it is.”Lage said he was happy that Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha had kind words to say about Benfica’s progress under him. “It’s always good to be recognised by our opponents. When I look at João’s career, I see a player of enormous quality. I know perfectly well that when you’re a midfielder you see the game in a different way. I’m sure that the way he read our team is largely due to the way he can read the game. We hope to play a good game against João’s team (Wednesday). That’s what we’re thinking about,” said Lage.
