Bayern Munich legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has retired, and his long-time national team successor in waiting, FC Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen, is out with a long-term injury. That leaves Germany’s goalkeeping situation in a state of flux. Lately, it has been a battle between VfB Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel (on loan from FC Bayern) and TSG Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann. “We are evaluating both games, but the performance in the Bundesliga counts more,” Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann explained in comments captured by kicker.de. “There are still a few games until March, a lot can happen — even if I do not expect either of them to collapse significantly.”Ter Stegen is still the presumptive favorite for the No. 1 jersey by the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around — but as of now it is not clear how soon or in what shape the Barça man will return. Germany was ever so close to ending 2024 on an ultimate high note with a 1-0 win, but a late, late penalty from Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai spoiled the party at the Puskas Arena in Budapest and Julian Nagelsmann was forced to sign off the calendar year with a draw. Felix Nmecha’s debut and first goal for his country would have been the fairytale headline to secure a win, but Szoboszlai’s cheeky panenka penalty had other ideas in the nineth minute of stoppage time. Germany still finished in the top spot of UEFA Nations League Group 3 of League A and each of Bayern Munich’s stars — Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané — came away unscathed from the last international break of the year. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all of the Bayern internationals, though, as Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha during a training session with Portugal in preparation for their Nations League matches against Poland and Croatia. To literally add insult to injury, Bayern’s club doctors confirmed his adductor problem is worse than initially feared.After Germany’s draw with Hungary, Kimmich was asked about the injury blow for his midfield partner for Bayern, to which he replied it being a “bitter” turn of events. “It’s extremely bitter for João and for us. He’s stabilized in the past few games. He was an important factor in us winning the past few games,” he told Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia). Vincent Kompany will now have to find a solution in midfield for someone to play alongside Kimmich. Palhinha had been the one filling in for the injured Aleksandar Pavlović, but until he is back fully fit, Kompany will need to look elsewhere, whether that means he will change the formation of the team entirely, or just slot one of Leon Goretzka, Konrad Laimer or Raphaël Guerreiro right in next to Kimmich in the center of midfield. Before the international break, the big story around Paul Wanner was that he had conversed with Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann and turned down a call up to the senior team in the ongoing struggle to decide to represent Germany or Austria. After all of that fuss, however, his international break has been struck with bad luck.He was substituted at half time in the first game of the international break against Denmark’s U-21s, with an injury suspected to be the reason. Germany could, unfortunately, not share any better news on the injury via their official Germany youth twitter account: Paul Wanner is injured and could not recover in time to be fit for today’s game [against France’s U21s]. If there was any doubt that Bayern Munich was going to make a hard-charge at procuring Bayer Leverkusen ace and German national team star Florian Wirtz in 2025, Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) would like to try and change that perception. Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl issued an extensive report on how Bayern Munich plans to get Wirtz and how it might work for him in Bavaria: Internally, it’s already been decided. Florian Wirtz is Bayern’s #1 transfer target for next summer. Within the club, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are exuding confidence that Wirtz would decide to join Bayern. The reason for Bayern’s confidence is that the player’s camp has signalled during the talks that Bayern have ‘serious chances’ of being Wirtz’s choice. The fact that Jamal Musiala is leaning towards extending his contract at Bayern is another argument for Wirtz.That is not good news for Bayer Leverkusen, who would love to either retain Wirtz or let him go abroad for a hefty fee. Unfortunately for Die Werkself, Bayern Munich’s longtime relationship with Wirtz might be too much to overcome: In case of a departure, Bayer Leverkusen would prefer to see Wirtz move abroad. Real Madrid are considered favourites, especially if Xabi Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti next summer. Nevertheless, one thing could play in Bayern’s favor over Madrid - the work that the club has been doing behind the scenes to prepare the signing. Bayern have been working intensively on the Wirtz signing for 8 years, since he was a 13-year old youth player at Köln. Bayern stayed in contact, continued to send scouts to watch him and met with the Wirtz family. However, the move didn’t materialize because the family wanted the player to stay and develop in his environment and finish school at home, hence the move from Köln to Bayer Leverkusen in 2020.One year later, Bayern invited Florian and his father/agent to Munich and expressed their interest again through an intermediary. Afterwards, Uli Hoeneß invited Wirtz’s father to his house in Tegernsee. After Wirtz’s ACL injury in 2022, Marco Neppe called Wirtz’s father and told him that Bayern are still very interested. Hasan Salihamidžić tried to convince Uli Hoeneß of signing Wirtz while he was injured as he would cost less money, but Hoeneß hesitated, especially after the Lucas Hernandez experience.All of those lost opportunities, however, have led to now with Bayern Munich being poised and ready to do whatever it takes to bring in Wirtz: Now Bayern have made contact with the Wirtz family once again. Eberl and Freund are pushing. The club is aware they would have to break their transfer record to sign Wirtz. Nevertheless, with the current financial situation of the club and the record numbers that will be announced at the next AGM, Bayern are well capable of affording a transfer that costs well over €100m. In addition, the supervisory board expects Eberl and Freund to raise further funds through player sales (Coman, Goretzka, Gnabry). There will be skepticism surrounding the report, but it does appear as if Bayern Munich is lasered in on its big target for the summer of 2025...and it would be an absolute game-changer. Germany ended the UEFA Nations League in perhaps not the most astonishing fashion, but with another hard-fought game. Julian Nagelsmann’s clearly cooking something with the DFB and the talk about the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already exciting, almost two years out.Jersey Swap: Dénes DibuszThe Hungary team had many decent performers throughout the squad today, but after Germany’s recent goalscoring record, the highlight has to be the Hungarian goalkeeper Dénes Dibusz. He had it relatively easy in the first half, but stood strong all game.Der Kaiser: Nico SchlotterbeckThe Dortmund central defender made his first appearance of the international break but was the leader in the defense that was heavily tested by the Hungarians. Joshua Kimmich was clearly struggling, but Schlotterbeck was effective enough to keep a clean sheet and distribute the ball as well. Not to mention, Schlotterbeck’s header created the goal for Felix Nmecha.Fußballgott: Felix NmechaIn a game where the midfield did not do much to convince, Felix Nmecha had himself a decent day earning his first ever start for Germany as well as his first goal, which ended up being crucial on the night.Der Bomber: Florian WirtzThe late-sub was the only real attacker to make a meaningful impact. Despite Sané and friends’ attempts, Wirtz made the decisive cross which would give Germany their goal. Unfortunately, his clumsy tackle and yellow card will rule him out for the first leg of the quarter-finals in March. His presence will certainly be missed.Meister of the Match: Alexander NübelBayern Munich loanee and Manuel Neuer’s alleged heir Alexander Nübel silenced the critics after following-up his last match out with a much stronger performance tonight. The goalkeeper made two big saves in the first half when Hungary was looking to gain an early lead. Jamal Musiala might just be Bayern Munich’s talisman right now. He is easily the most important player at this club currently and his absence is felt whenever he is not around. While he chose to move to Germany from England (Chelsea’s youth academy) before his career at the senior level began, he could have still chosen to play for the senior English men’s national team. He chose not to and represents Germany now. Along with Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, he is at the heart of the national side. According to @iMiaSanMia, Musiala mentioned the following about his choice: “It was important to me to take the time and listen to my gut feeling. I wasn’t thinking about who was better at the moment. Both nations have a great history. I made sure that I didn’t regret anything, no matter what decision I made. The Germans were able to outlast Hungary for the 1-0 win, but it was not anywhere near as aesthetic as Saturday’s 7-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Felix Nmecha, Julian Brandt, Nico Schlotterbeck, Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, and Benjamin Heinrichs all got the nod. It would have been great for Kimmich to take a seat for the match, but even after picking up a knock against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bayern Munich man wanted to play — and Nagelsmann (as he did at Bayern) was not going to deny him. Speaking of Bayern Munich, having three players that the club might be planning to use on Friday against FC Augsburg probably did not sit all that well with the club, but such is life. Even with the mass lineup changes, it was clear that Germany was the side. What was also clear was that this game was not going to finish 7-0.Gnabry had a great look with the ball on his left foot, but he sent the shot wide in the 12th minute. Germany was looking dangerous, but clearly had a lineup that was feeling out how to play together early on. Alexander Nübel, who had a great save in the 24th minute, bailed out Kimmich in the 39th minute when Zsolt Nagy got a step on the right-back and ripped off a laser. The goalkeeper didn’t have to move much to make the stop, but it was a hard shot from relatively close range. Germany dominated first half possession, but did allow six shots (two on target). The attacking group of Sané, Brandt, Gnabry, and Führich was lacking chemistry and precision. I do like how Führich plays wing, though. The VfB Stuttgart man and Sané were both decent on the wings. In the 60th minute, Brandt almost had a goal, but was a bit too eager to get behind Hungary’s backline. Kai Havertz pinged the post when he came into the match on what would have been a spectacular goal.When Havertz, Musiala, and Wirtz subbed in, the attack was given a jolt. Nübel did it again with a big save in the 67th minute on what looked like a surefire goal by Barnabás Varga.Florian Wirtz seemed especially....angry when he entered the match. In the 76th minute, Germany finally broke through. A Wirtz corner found the head of Schlotterbeck, but the attempt was turned away by Hungary goalkeeper Dénes Dibusz. However, Felix Nmecha was there to clean things up in front of the net for the score. In extra time, though, a really unfortunate handball on Robin Koch resulted in a penalty kick for Dominik Szoboszlai, who essentially threw a change-up to a sprawling Nübel to knot the game at 1-1 on the final play. Overall, the game went as expected. Hungary is not a pushover and Germany still had a chance to win until the very last second. The team continues to make progress and we got a chance to see some of the depth options in a competitive match, so all-in-all, this was a win for Germany’s squad and its coaching staff alike. The German national team is rolling at the moment and two of the biggest reasons for that success have been Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. The duo has grown close in the last few months and seems to be embracing the weight being thrust upon them to play the leading roles for the squad. How close are they getting? Well, maybe so tight that they can call each other dumb after a careless foul.Playing on a yellow card, Wirtz picked up another one, which will see him suspended when UEFA Nations League resumes play in 2025. That foul led to this exchange between Germany’s top two players (per Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia): Jamal Musiala on Florian Wirtz’s yellow card which means he’s suspended for the quarterfinals first leg: “I shouted at him!”• What did you tell him?Musiala: “Dumb!”The duo should embrace this...imagine the Photoshopped movie posters for “Dumb & Dumber” with Musiala and Wirtz in those orange and power blue tuxes. Germany concludes its Nations League group stage run perfect with another wi — wait, is that a handball? Oh.Dead rubber, hit the roadWell. At least the meaningless matches are over for a while. The Nations League was never the glitziest of competitions, but Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann treated it seriously and had his team amped up and ready to go — with an eye on the FIFA 2026 Men’s World Cup. Still, with top spot in the group locked up after last Saturday’s 7-0 blasting of Bosnia and Herzegovina...there is only so much motivation for any group to muster.Significant changes to the XI (except for Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich — why, why, why?) did nothing to help the rhythm either. But the Germans were off all night. From back passes that nearly went out of bounds to attacks that just would not stitch together, it was simply that kind of night. You get the feeling Nagelsmann will just be happy that his team got out healthy, and some of the lesser-used players in the side got a chance to strut their stuff.The next international period is now not until March.Credit to HungaryAs much as Germany did not look up for it, Hungary deserves credit here too. Germany has shown under Nagelsmann that if you aren’t careful, they will simply blow you apart.Note that Bosnia and Herzegovina drew 1-1 to the Netherlands today. This Hungary team is not exactly a powerhouse, but they had all hands on deck. Defensively, they were sharp. When German chances came, they were everywhere — blocking, deflecting, intercepting. It is no accident Germany ended up with only three shots on target all game and 12 overall, from a whopping 72% possession.Offensively, and on the counter, Hungary looked — well, hungry. Though they didn’t get too many opportunities, they had the Germans under pressure every chance they got. From 28% possession they wrung 16 shots and six on target. Numbers aren’t everything, but that tells you a bit about the Hungarian efficiency against a smart but tested German structure today.Credit goes especially to Liverpool FC star Dominik Szoboszlai. The dynamic midfielder stood out as the Hungarian danger man, ready to carve Germany open if ever he was to be given the slightest opening. It was Szoboszlai who created Roland Sallai’s early chance in the first half, and who drove at the German defense and created the wild sequence of chances at the very end of second half stoppage time, which gave Hungary a last-second penalty opportunity. And Szoboszlai who buried that penalty with calm, composure, and a touch of cheek, in what would be the last kick of the game. Class player — who helped his team on to a fair result.That Germany midfield...The youngster duo — Bayern’s Aleksandar Pavlović (20) and VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller (23) — cannot get back soon enough. Pascal Groß was dropped for Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha to pair alongside Leverkusen’s Robert Andrich this time, but something feels terribly missing. Neither Andrich nor Nmecha were too secure in possession — Nmecha giving the ball away cheaply on a soft cross-field pass with one of the first actions of the game — and the Germans relied on their wing and forward players for influence instead.Nmecha is still young (24) but Andrich is not, and he is one of many BVB players who seem to be struggling to stick with the national team despite their on-paper individual talent. Yet there is at least a bright spot here, as Nmecha used his strength and savvy to hold off defenders and pounce on a rebound for Germany’s only goal of the game.Still...in Nagelsmann’s system, midfield dynamism under pressure will surely be in demand. Germany might have it in its next generation of youngsters, but question marks still abound, particularly with depth.Funny how full-backs and even strikers have dropped off the radar of top national team concerns. La Serenissima managed to repeat the trick with a 3-1 win, the first time they’ve ever scored more than once in a single match throughout the team’s 34-year-existence.If you recall, their first match was a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli to send the nation into hysterics. Their most recent one featured goals from Lorenzo Lazzari, Nicola Nanni from the spot, and Alessandro Golinucci to overturn Liechtenstein’s opener five minutes from the end of the first half. France v Israel - UEFA Nations League 2024/25 League A Group A2 Photo by Jean Catuffe/Getty Images Making a strong case to share minutes with Manuel Neuer Daniel Peretz may not be getting playing time at Bayern Munich due to Manuel Neuer’s presence and the preference for Sven Ulreich as back-up, he sure is making waves on international level. In fact, he shut out Belgium as Israel went to win 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League (via @iMiaSanMia).Peretz made four saves while his teammate Yarden Shua scored four minutes from time to secure all three points. Despite this win, Israel could not escape relegation and thus went down to League B. With Bayern Munich exploring all options for a successor to Neuer, Peretz is making sure his name is heard and in contention.If you haven’t seen yet, San Marino won not one, but TWO games in their League D group and gained promotion to League C. In the second of those matches, they scored three goals. The status of Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, who returned from Portugal camp due to an injury, might have taken a bad turn. FCBayern.com released an update on Palhinha’s status, which indicated that he would be sidelined for the “coming weeks”: FC Bayern’s medical department has confirmed that João Palhinha suffered a torn muscle fibre in his right adductor while training with the Portugal national team. The midfielder will therefore be sidelined for the coming weeks.Meanwhile, Sky Sport journalists Torben Hoffmann and Kerry Hau offered a report (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), indicated that Palhinha was done for the rest of this calendar year: João Palhinha’s injury is worse than first thought. 2024 is over for him. A comeback in January is currently expected.Bild backed that up (via @iMiaSanMia) by stating that Palhinha will be out six weeks: João Palhinha is now set to be sidelined for around 6 weeks.
