From the observations of Israeli psychologist Sam Vaknin, now the reality among the youth in Western countries:
"Both men and women are struggling to transition from the hookup culture to meaningful dating and intimate relationships. Many endure a series of failed connections, and after experiencing repeated disappointments, around half of them may become lifelong, largely celibate singles. At least a quarter of these individuals develop anxiety disorders, depression, or substance abuse issues.
To avoid inevitable hurt and heartbreak, those affected by the hookup culture often choose between a life of reckless promiscuity—characterized by emotionless, meaningless encounters—or complete abstinence and a fear of intimacy.
Unfortunately, feminism often misinterprets these two dysfunctional behavioral patterns as forms of “female empowerment.”
Studies and educational content occupy less than half of college advertising and promotional materials. Instead, the predominant focus is on fun, which is often equated with sex. Hookup culture serves as a marketing strategy to entice youth with the notion of unrestricted “freedom” and to attract them with the idea of available women.
Women are increasingly postponing committed relationships, such as marriage, until their early 30s, prioritizing their careers and cherishing the freedom to make diverse choices.
In the meantime, many young women avoid intimacy and emotional connections while engaging in casual sex with strangers or friends-with-benefits arrangements. However, by the time they decide to pursue a serious partnership, about half of these women discover, often to their dismay, that it may be too late.
As a result, they may find themselves embittered and misandrist, living as lifelong singles, while the other half cycle through a series of tumultuous romantic encounters.
The rate of infidelity has more than doubled as women grapple with growing anxiety in their search for male alternatives, often betraying their current partners.
What has led to this predicament? Three main factors:
1. Men increasingly prefer casual sex with younger women who enter the sexual marketplace each year;
2. The double standard persists. Many men deceive women by pretending that it no longer exists, as reputations tarnished by years of promiscuity still deter potential long-term partnerships;
3. After decades of meaningless sex, many individuals, both women and men, lack the basic skills and experience necessary for building healthy relationships, rendering them unsuitable as partners.
Consequently, many men are opting out of commitment, seeking only casual encounters with readily available women.
As they age, some men may choose to marry more conservative and compliant women, including those from overseas.
Some feminists argue that hookup culture has led to positive changes: most young people still aspire to marry, and teenagers today are less likely than their parents to engage in sex or face unintended pregnancies.
However, these perceived “accomplishments” are misleading. Many young people struggle to form long-term relationships or even get married. According to a Pew Research Center study, an alarming 38% of young individuals are adopting solitude and celibacy as their default lifestyle.
Sex has historically been transactional; women have long traded it for protection and provision. Nowadays, studies and interviews reveal that women are often exchanging sex for free drinks or a place to stay when intoxicated.
This commoditization of sex creates a cognitive dissonance that many modern women resolve by framing their experiences as “liberating choices.”
Today, both men and women often separate sex from emotions and meaning for an average of 15 years. This recurring practice ingrains a lasting association in their neuroplastic brains, making it difficult to change even when they wish to. Even in committed, loving relationships, sex can become mechanical and devoid of intimacy."
