Six Years In, Maintainer Darrick Wong Says ‘Goodbye’ to XFS
Linux On the heels of the Alpine Linux news, the Linux kernel currently needs a new maintainer for XFS. Darrick Wong has been maintaining the filesystem kernel code for several years now and has reported feeling burned out from performing too many roles. FOSS Force quotes Wong: "I burned out years ago trying to juggle the roles senior developer, reviewer, tester, triager (crappily), release manager, and (at times) manager liaison. There's enough work here in this one subsystem for a team of 20 FT, but instead we're squeezed to half that. I thought if I could hold on just a bit longer I could help to maintain the focus on long term development to improve the experience for users. I was wrong." Wong has suggested Chandan Babu, a kernel developer with Oracle, as his replacement. Wong has clarified that he will continue to work on XFS, just not as the official kernel maintainer for the filesystem

Linux Android Backup Companion is the Android companion app, giving the backup script access to data otherwise not available to ADB.
Linux Android Backup is a tiny shell script & Flutter app that makes securely backing up Android devices easy, without vendor lock-ins or using closed-source software that could put your data at risk. It's based on ADB but doesn't use the deprecated adb backup command.
Data backed up:
• Apps (.apk files of installed apps)
• Internal storage (pictures, downloads, videos, Signal backups if enabled, etc)
• Contacts (exported in vCard format)
These 3 things are the majority of what anyone would want to keep safe, but we all have different expectations and requirements, so suggestions are welcome.
Features:
• Automatically restores backed up data.
• Works on the 3 major operating systems, and supports any Android device.
• Backs up data not normally accessible through ADB using a native companion app.
• Tiny - the script is 5KB in size, and the companion app is around 15 megabytes.
• Doesn't use proprietary formats: your data is safe even if this script ever gets lost. Simply open archives created by this script using 7-Zip.
• Encryption is forced - you can't disable it.
• All data is compressed using 7-Zip with maximum compression settings.

Does Desktop Linux Have a Firefox Problem?
OS News' managing editor calls Firefox "the single most important desktop Linux application," shipping in most distros (with some users later opting for a post-installation download of Chrome).
But "I'm genuinely worried about the state of browsers on Linux, and the future of Firefox on Linux in particular..."
While both GNOME and KDE nominally invest in their own two browsers, GNOME Web and Falkon, their uptake is limited and releases few and far between. For instance, none of the major Linux distributions ship GNOME Web as their default browser, and it lacks many of the features users come to expect from a browser. Falkon, meanwhile, is updated only sporadically, often going years between releases. Worse yet, Falkon uses Chromium through QtWebEngine, and GNOME Web uses WebKit (which are updated separately from the browser, so browser releases are not always a solid metric!), so both are dependent on the goodwill of two of the most ruthless corporations in the world, Google and Apple respectively.

A major Alpine package maintainer is stepping down :(
The Alpine Linux community may soon face having few packages in its repositories or need to find a few new package maintainers. Phoronix is reporting one of the more active package maintainers in the Alpine community is stepping down. "Alice "psykose" who is easily responsible for the highest number of commits per author over the past year has decided to step down from maintaining her packages. These Alpine aports stats put her at 13,894 commits over the past year. In comparison, the second most prolific packager saw just 2,053 commits... Or put another way, psykose has 6.7x the number of commits as the next packager. The 13.8k commits is also about half of the 26.8k commits seen in total over the past year.
Over the weekend I was alerted to the fact that psykose/nekopsykose has begun dropping maintainership of packages she maintained. All of her recent alpinelinux/aports commits two days ago were removing packages she oversaw. Curious about the situation, I reached out to Alice and she confirmed she has dropped maintenance of anything she maintained and proceeded to lock herself out of the Alpine Linux systems she had access to."

The problem with federated web apps
Trying to make web applications federated is a popular effort. Examples include things like the “fediverse”, as well as various other efforts, like attempts to make distributed software forges, and so on. However, all of these efforts suffer from a problem which is fundamental in building federated applications built on top of the web platform.
The problem is fundamentally this: when building an application on top of the web platform, an HTTP URL inherently couples an application and a resource.
