Japan December Trade Surplus Y358.971 Billion

Japan posted a merchandise trade surplus of 358.971 billion yen in December, the Ministry of Finance said on Wednesday - down 43.5 percent on year.
The headline figure was shy of expectations for a surplus 520.0 billion yen following the 113.4 billion yen surplus in November.
Exports climbed 9.3 percent on year to 7.302 trillion yen, also missing forecasts for a gain or 9.8 percent and down from 16.2 percent in the previous month.
Exports to Asia advanced 9.9 percent on year to 4.111 trillion yen, while exports to China alone jumped an annual 15.8 percent to 1.507 trillion yen.
Exports to the United States gained 3.0 percent on year to 1.411 trillion yen and exports to the European Union jumped an annual 11.4 percent to 792.213 billion yen.
Imports advanced an annual 14.9 percent to 6.943 trillion yen versus expectations for a gain of 12.4 percent and down from 17.2 percent a month earlier.
Imports from Asia climbed 15.7 percent on year to 3.379 trillion yen, while imports from China alone gained an annual 14.8 percent to 1.704 trillion yen.
Imports from the United States were up 7.5 percent to 699.419 billion yen, while imports from the European Union gained 9.8 percent to 786.388 billion yen.
Also on Wednesday, the latest survey from Nikkei said that the manufacturing sector in Japan continued to expand in January, and at an accelerated rate, with a manufacturing PMI score of 54.4.
That's up from 54.0 in December, and it moves further above the boom-or-bust line of 50 that separates expansion from contraction.
Individually, output expanded at the quickest rate in 47 months, while new orders continued to rise sharply.

Prime News: Verizon Profit Gets Boost from U.S. Tax Bill

Verizon said it expects to bolster its cash flow this financial year by between $3.5 billion to $4 billion on the back of the recently signed U.S. tax overhaul, as it posted quarterly sales that surpassed analysts' estimates but said its adjusted earnings did not hit projections.
The U.S. telecom firm said profits surged to $18.8 billion or $4.56 per share in the quarter ending in December, against the $4.6 billion or $1.10 per share in the same period a year ago.
Like many other enterprises, Verizon had priorly noted that the revision to the tax code would lift its earning and said it anticipated a one-time after-tax boost to earnings of around $16.8 billion or $4.10 per share.
But, adjusted for one-time items, the firm reported earnings of 86 cents per share. The figure was flat from the prior-year quarter and missed analysts' estimates of 88 cents per share.
The firm said its revenue for the quarter edged up 5 percent to $34 billion, higher than analysts' expectations.
The revenue increase game as its wireless business added $1.2 million retail postpaid subscribers in the fourth quarter and net phone gains of 431, 000.
Verizon expects low single-digit percentage growth in adjusted earnings per shares and projects capital spending in the range of $17 billion to $17.8 billion in the fiscal year 2018. The firm also expects revenue growth at low-single-digit percentage rates.

The Australian economy picked up steam in December, the latest survey from Westpac Bank revealed on Wednesday as its leading economic index moved higher by 0.27 percent on month.
That follows the downwardly revised 0.05 percent increase in November (originally 0.10 percent) - although it remains in positive territory.
"This is a very strong above trend reading and, following the solid results in October and November, points to solid above trend growth in the early part of 2018," Westpac said in a statement accompanying the data.
"However, in our view there are still key negatives around housing, household incomes and the consumer which are likely to challenge the sustainability of any upswing in 2018."

ARGENTINA: Merval Scratches 34,000 Points As Traders Braced For Rate Cut

Merval, the benchmark index of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, rose 1.23% to 33,939.67 points Tuesday, again scratching 34,000-points barrier while the market discounted a reduction in the interest rate in Tuesday's decision by the Argentinean central bank.
"The trading volume expanded to $ 1.2 billion, of which $ 154 million corresponded to Holcim which included a couple of important blocks," said analysts at Bull Market Brokers.
After the closing of the market, the central bank of Argentina cut the country's interest rate from 28% to 27.25% per year, as widely expected by analysts.

Japan will on Wednesday release December data for imports, exports and trade balance, highlighting a busy day for Asia-Pacific economic activity.
Imports are expected to jump 12.4 percent on year after climbing 17.2 percent in November. Exports are called higher by an annual 9.8 percent, slowing from 16.2 percent in the previous month. The trade surplus is pegged at 520.0 billion yen, up from 113.4 billion yen a month earlier.
Japan also will see final November results for its leading and coincident indexes; the previous readings suggested scores of 108.6 and 118.1, respectively.
New Zealand will provide December numbers for credit card spending; in November, spending was up 0.8 percent on month and 9.1 percent on year.
Australia will see December figures for skilled vacancies; in November, vacancies were up 0.3 percent on month.
Malaysia will provide December figures for consumer prices; in November, inflation was up 0.7 percent on month and 3.4 percent on year.

Treasuries Regain Ground Following Recent Weakness

After trending lower over the past few sessions, treasuries regained some ground during the trading day on Tuesday.
Bond prices moved to the upside early in the session and remained firmly positive throughout the day. As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, fell by 4.1 basis points to 2.624 percent.
The pullback by the ten-year yield came after it climbed to its highest closing level in well over three years on Monday.
Treasuries remained firmly positive following the release of the results of the Treasury Department's auction of $26 billion worth of two-year notes, which attracted above average demand.
The two-year note auction drew a high yield of 2.066 percent and a bid-to-cover ratio of 3.22, while the ten previous two-year note auctions had an average bid-to-cover ratio of 2.83.
The bid-to-cover ratio is a measure of demand that indicates the amount of bids for each dollar worth of securities being sold.
On Wednesday, the Treasury is due to sell $34 billion worth of five-year note, with bond traders likely to keep an eye on the results.
Trading on Wednesday may also be impacted by reaction to the National Association of Realtors' report on existing home sales in the month of December.

Crude oil prices were higher Tuesday as OPEC officials continued to signal their determination to re-balance oil markets via supply cuts.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih told CNBC: "I'm still anxious about the fragility of the market (and) about the potential black swans that may spring in front of us. By and large, we are on our way but we are not there yet"
Earlier this week, al-Falih hinted a more long-lasting arrangement with Russia to curb supplies. "We should not limit our efforts to 2018. We need to be talking about a longer framework for our cooperation," al-Falih said.
After the bell today, the American Petroleum Institute releases its weekly U.S. inventories data.
Inventories have been dwindling for the past two months, with the decline accelerating in recent weeks.
Feb. WTI oil climbed 90 cents, or 1.4%, to settle at $64.47/bbl, the highest since December 2014.

The Treasury Department kicked off this week's series of long-term securities auctions with the sale of $26 billion worth of two-year notes on Tuesday, attracting above average demand.
The two-year note auction drew a high yield of 2.066 percent and a bid-to-cover ratio of 3.22.
Last month, the Treasury also sold $26 billion worth of two-year notes, drawing a high yield of 1.922 percent and a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.52.

U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday, as solid results from Netflix helped boost the S&P and Nasdaq Composite. However, losses in Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble added pressure on the Dow Industrials.
The Nasdaq composite ended at a record peak, rising 0.7 percent to 7,460.29. The S&P 500 also closed at an all-time peak, gaining 0.2 percent at 2,839.13, as the corporate earnings season continued. The Dow Jones industrial average notched an intraday record, before closing 3.79 points lower at 26,210.81.
Video streaming giant Netflix after the close announced that total net adds reached 8.33 million, well above a StreetAccount estimate of 6.39 million. Netflix's stock jumped ten percent, lifting the company's market cap above $100 billion for the first time.
Dow components Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble and Travelers Cos. all posted better-than-expected earnings and revenue on Tuesday. Verizon, another Dow component, posted a profit that fell short of expectations, while sales exceeded analyst estimates.
Other stocks, known as part of the “FAANG” - Facebook, Apple, Amazon and Google parent Alphabet - also moved higher.
Insurer Travelers provided the biggest boost to the Dow, climbing 5.32 percent after the company's profit topped estimates.
Equities are off to a strong start for the year, with the three major indexes rising at least 6 percent in January. Stocks are building on the strong gains made in 2017.
Whirlpool jumped 3.2 percent after Trump approved a 20 percent tariff on the first 1.2 million imported large residential washing machines in the first year and a 50 percent tariff on machines above that number.

Investors cheered plans by Europe's biggest retailer Carrefour to cut costs, open its loss-making Chinese business to new investors and spend more heavily on e-commerce in the face of competition from Amazon.
France's Carrefour announced its 2022 transformation plan. The company is looking to step up its investment in digital, while opening 2,000 convenience stores in the next five years and seeking a partnership with Tencent in China. Shares advanced nearly 3.5 percent.
Switching focus back to Europe, computer accessories firm Logitech climbed eight percent after it saw its sales increase to $812 million in the third quarter, soaring 22 percent compared to the period a year before. Shares were also lifted after it improved its full-year outlook.
Budget airline easyJet saw its total revenue increased 14.4 percent in the first quarter, notching £1.14 billion ($1.59 billion), helping lift its share price up more than five percent in trade.
Online grocery technology provider Ocado climbed 0.9 percent following a 27 percent surge on Monday when it announced a deal with Canada's second-largest food supermarket group Sobeys.

VENEZUELA: Constituent Assembly To Call Presidential Elections This Year

Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly, controlled by representatives from the ruling administration, agreed on Tuesday to call presidential elections in the first four months of 2018.
The bill was raised by the representative Diosdado Cabello, number two in the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). Traditionally, Venezuela celebrates presidential elections in December.
The call has been one of the constant requests of the opposition to solve the political and social crisis in which the country is engulfed. The National Electoral Council must set the date of the elections, in which the president Nicol?s Maduro could seek re-election after completing six years of office.
In the last presidential elections, held in April 2013, months after Hugo Ch?vez died, Maduro defeated the opposition leader Henrique Capriles.

The median annual inflation rate expected by the Argentineans for the next 12 months remained at 20% in January, the same level as in the previous two months, according to the Torcuato Di Tella University's Business School's Survey of Inflation Expectations.

After a positive start to the day, the dollar has turned lower against all of its major rivals Tuesday afternoon. The continued U.S. data drought is keeping some investors on the sidelines despite the progress made by lawmakers to end the U.S. government shutdown.
The U.S. Senate voted 81 to 18 in favor of limiting debate on a short-term spending bill, which would fund the government through February 8th.
Democrats agreed to vote to advance the short-term spending bill after Republican leaders promised to hold a vote on legislation providing protections for young illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan maintained its aggressive monetary easing, as widely expected, and left its assessment of inflation and growth unchanged.
Governor Haruhiko Kuroda and his board members decided by an 8-1 majority vote to hold its target of raising the amount of outstanding JGB holdings at an annual pace of about JPY 80 trillion, the bank said in a statement on Tuesday.
The greenback reached an early high of Y111.174 against the Japanese Yen Tuesday, but has since dropped to around Y110.375.
Japan's all industry activity increased for the second straight month in November, and at a faster-than-expected pace, data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed Tuesday. The all industry activity index climbed 1.0 percent month-over-month in November, following a 0.3 percent rebound in October. Economists had expected a 0.8 percent rise for the month.
The dollar climbed to an early high of $1.2222 against the Euro Tuesday, but has since retreated to around $1.2285.
Germany's economic confidence improved to an eight-month high and the assessment of current situation hit a record in January, indicating an optimistic outlook for the economy in the first half of the year.
The ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment rose three points to 20.4 in January, survey results from the Mannheim-based think tank ZEW showed Tuesday. The score exceeded the expected level of 17.7 and was the highest since May, when the reading was 20.6. Nonetheless, the score was below its long-term average of 23.7.
The buck rose to a high of $1.3914 against the pound sterling this morning, but has since pulled back to around $1.3990.
The UK budget deficit was the smallest for the month of December in 17 years on credit from the EU and higher value-added tax.
Public sector net borrowing excluding banks decreased by GBP 2.5 billion from the previous year to GBP 2.6 billion, which was the lowest December net borrowing since 2000, data from the Office for National Statistics showed Tuesday.

Gold futures continued to grind higher Tuesday despite a mixed performance from U.S. stocks.
A dearth of first-tier economic news produced a quiet session in the gold markets today.
The weak U.S. dollar provided support for gold prices, which are hovering at their highest since September.
Analysts say the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates on hold until sustained inflation is detected in consumer price data.
Feb. gold gained $4.80, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,336.70/oz.
In economic news from the UK, growth in manufacturing output and domestic and export orders picked up in three months to January, the Industrial Trends survey data from the Confederation of British Industry said.
A net balance of 13 percent of manufacturers reported that they were more optimistic about the general business situation.

Германия впервые за последние 5 лет – с момента введения антироссийских санкций – увеличила объем экспорта в Россию. В течение 11 месяцев 2017 года экспортные показатели выросли на 21% по сравнению с данными за аналогичный период 2016 года, достигнув отметки в 24,1 млрд евро ($29,53 млрд). Согласно данным Федерального статистического ведомства, размер экспорта за весь 2016 год составил 21,5 млрд евро. Самой популярной продукцией, произведенной в Германии, были станки, автомобили, химическое сырье и товары. Также можно отметить некоторое улучшение и в области импорта российской продукции в Германию. За отчетный период в течение 11 месяцев 2017 года импорт вырос до уровня 28,6 млрд евро ($35,04 млрд). В 2016 году аналогичный показатель составлял 26,5 млрд евро.
На часовом графике котировки вышли из треугольника через его нижнюю границу. Цель этого сигнала – 6155,00$ (точка прорыва – высота треугольника). Промежуточная цель – 9159,00 (нижняя точка треугольника). Неоднозначным мнением поделился директор по инвестициям Bleakley Advisory Group Питер Буквар. Он считает, что все криптовалюты находятся в гигантском пузыре и «из этого пузыря уже начал выходить воздух». По мнению Буквара, в течение 2018 года биткоин может потерять до 90% стоимости. Как правило, в последнее время мы слышали прогнозы аналитиков с того же Уолл-стрит о новом росте стоимости «битка». Очень интересно, что SaxoBank также дает примерно такой же прогноз с той лишь разницей, что перед падением до 1 тысяч долларов за монету биткоин ждет рост до 50-60 тысяч $. Аналитики Saxobank считают, что Китай и Россия погубят биткоин. РФ уже сейчас обеспокоена новым возможным оттоком капитала из страны, поэтому вполне может запретить биткоин на своей территории, как уже сделал Китай, а в перспективе могут сделать и другие страны. Также сейчас заинтересовался биткоином и криптовалютами в целом МВФ. А в ближайшее время может с соответствующим заявлением выступить и ФРС.

Продолжает отрабатываться новый сигнал на покупку, который остается сильным и подтвержденным, так как цена располагается выше линии Киджун-сен. Таким образом, длинные позиции сейчас продолжают быть актуальными, с целью второй уровень сопротивления 92,35, так как первый таргет был преодолен. Полосы Боллинджера направлены вверх и вновь расширяются, что означает восходящую тенденцию по инструменту. Новая бычья модель «Утренняя звезда» просигнализировала о завершении витка коррекции. Разворот индикатора MACD наверх подтвердил окончание коррекции. На 15-минутном таймфрейме видно, что цена возобновила движение вверх и преодолела уровень 91,17.
