⚡️ The JPY is the big loser today and is (as always) very sensitive to changes in US government bond yields. The USD and U.S. government bond yields rose sharply after the latest labor market data in the U.S., which was much better than analysts expected (528,000 new hires vs. 250,000 expected). Wages also rose more than expected, suggesting that the Fed will continue to raise interest rates in the coming years. The USD undoubtedly received a boost that will likely last for much longer - although the strong reaction in the JPY was certainly overdone. The USD/JPY was up almost 2%. We are positioning us SHORT in the GBP again. The GBP remains lost despite the Bank of England raising rates by 50 basis points earlier this week. The high inflation and poor economic picture painted by the Bank of England will continue to weigh on the GBP, leading investors to believe that the UK central bank has little to no room for further rate hikes. I expect the rise in U.S. Treasury yields to cool, which will help the JPY rebound and also push GBP/JPY back down.

📋 In Asian trading, the GBP was able to stabilize after recent losses that were triggered by the Bank of England's very gloomy economic and inflation forecasts. In recent weeks, the GBP was able to gain against the other currencies because it was expected that the Bank of England would follow in the footsteps of the U.S. Federal Reserve and continue to tighten monetary policy quickly. In a sense, the Bank of England did, as the central bank raised its key interest rate by half a percentage point to 1.75%, the highest level since late 2008. However, the Bank of England's pessimistic outlook and the ongoing energy crisis in Europe paint a bleak picture of the U.K. economy, limiting the Bank of England's ability to continue raising interest rates significantly from here in and attempt cool inflation. For forex traders, the focus today will be on the US NFP report in particular, which will shed light on whether the U.S. labor market is still healthy - I expect solid data overall, but a slowdown in hiring. However, the US economy is certainly in better shape than the UK, which will continue to support the USD and give the Fed more room to tighten further in comparison to the Bank of England. The JPY remains stable, benefiting from lower US Treasury yields and some tensions in the region.

📋 We are seeing some weakness in commodities (with the exception of precious metals), suggesting that demand is falling in anticipation of an economic slowdown. Lower commodity prices may also be an indicator of an impending sell-off in equity markets, but overall strong earnings are currently supporting global equity markets. The Bank of Canada has been aggressively raising interest rates in recent months - including by 100 basis points on July 13. Consumer confidence in Canada is falling and the majority of Canadians believe the Bank of Canada is not making the right decisions - and they believe much of the inflation (which the Bank of Canada is trying to combat with quick rate hikes) is due to higher oil prices (which is obviously true, but also supply chain disruptions play a large role) and which is outside the direct influence of the BoC. Higher interest rates are adding to the pressure on consumers, as many Canadians are already being hit hard by the rising cost of living, including rapidly rising rents - in fact, rents have never been hotter in Canada despite the rising interest rates. The now weakening oil price will also weigh on the Loonie, as will the expectation that the Bank of Canada will significantly slow upcoming interest rate hikes. We are insulating the CAD and trading it against the relatively stable CHF, which is in demand as a safe haven, especially by European traders.

📋 The rally in global equities remains on shaky ground, but is being further supported today by yesterday's better-than-expected U.S. economic data and continued strong earnings reports. However, it is still on shaky ground as stocks have also rallied recently on poor economic data - because it indicated that the Fed has limited room to tighten further. I think investors are overly optimistic on inflation cooling down already, but the positive earnings reports (reports today from Eli Lilly, Kellogg, Alibaba and ConocoPhillips - all before the NYSE opens) will likely continue to paint a picture of a healthy US economy. I also expect very good US labor market data, which will reinforce the impression that the U.S. is not yet in a recession and potentially even avoid one. The Dow Jones is a relative underperformer versus the S&P 500 and especially the technology-heavy Nasdaq. I expect some of the biggest names in the Dow Jones to post gains today and Caterpillar to end its recent negative streak. Also, key software stocks Microsoft and Salesforce look poised to break away from June highs and help the Dow Jones test the 33000 level, last reached on June 9. In Europe, mining giant Glencore reported a record quarter (as we expected) with profits doubling y/y.

⚡️ In the short term, gold faces headwinds as the USD remains strong and is supported by rising expectations that the Fed meeting minutes will reveal the Fed's determination to fight inflation (and bring it down towards the Fed's 2% target). The USD also benefits from rising safe haven demand, as the USD remains the preferred safe haven (possibly after defensive equities, but definitely ahead of gold or the JPY). We also see US Treasury yields staying near their levels after Friday's jump up. Gold is sensitive to bond yields. I expect gold to test (and possibly break through) $1,770 in the near term before recovering later in August.

⚡️ U.S. labor market data (NFPs) came in much better than analysts expected (payrolls rose by an impressive 528,000 and the unemployment rate was 3.5% - well above analysts' estimates of around 250,000 and 3.6%, respectively), giving the USD a tailwind in expectations and strengthening the Fed's conviction that the U.S. economy - especially the labor market - remains strong and can withstand further rate hikes to fight inflation. The ECB can only raise rates to a limited extent as the Eurozone economy is much more affected by the energy crisis and the slowdown in China. In response to the very strong NFP data, we are positioning SHORT in the EUR/USD.

We are (again) securing big profits with gold. We have traded the yellow precious metal and the black gold (oil) extremely well this week - particularly in oil we saw the big drop happen when analysts were still expecting tight supply and disappointing OPEC+ production increases to support oil prices. Gold remains on track to retest $1,800, while I think further losses for oil at current levels are limited after another day of sharp declines. WTI could test $85, but with future contracts (2023) close to this level, it is unlikely that oil prices can fall another 6-10% from here in the short term (we set a tight SL on WTI in case you have a short position open and re-enter SHORT at a higher price again).

⚡️ We brought home a nice profit with gold earlier today as our gold position hit TP and rose a bit further, but then we saw the expected profit taking - a strong performance from Wall Street in pre-market trading drove some investors back into equities, but overall I continue to sense concerns in the market that keep gold attractive. Recession worries in some regions of the world, particularly Europe and Asia, and geopolitical concerns are also supporting gold on increased safe haven demand. While the Fed is trying to reinforce its message that it is determined to fight inflation and will not change course anytime soon in 2023, the market is pricing in a slowdown in further Fed hikes. We see US government bond yields lower again (to which gold is very sensitive) and the USD with limited upside potential for further gains against major currencies. Gold remains bullish in the short and medium term. We want to stay LONG.

⚡️ We have already taken home a nice little profit on our Gold LONG from this morning. We are now seeing a sharp drop in gold prices with improved risk sentiment in the short term as most investors believe that China will not do much except step up its military exercises and bellicose statements - I believe that China will try to do more, some sort of follow up action to show that China can do something if it wants to - this can also be sanctions to hurt the Taiwanese economy. In Chinese social media, the Chinese position on this issue is seen as weakness and shame, so I expect the Chinese leadership to show strength for both domestic and international audiences - Chinese President Xi Jinping will also try to ensure that the government's actions, especially his, are not seen as weakness. Gold also came under pressure as the USD rose due to some hawkish comments from Fed officials and a rise in US Treasury bond yields. I believe this will be short lived. Gold offers a good entry opportunity near $1,765, where I expect further support. I expect gold to continue to rise this week and possibly reach $1,800 before the end of the week.
