Compound tenses are tenses that are made up of two parts:

1. the conjugated auxiliary verb (either avoir or être)
2. the past participle.

You can negate compound tenses in French in the following way:

* ne [conjugated auxiliary verb] pas [past participle]

➖Avez-vous été déçu ?
– Je n’ai pas été déçu.

➖Were you disappointed?
– I was not disappointed.

➖Tu n’as pas fait un très bon travail.
You haven’t done a very good job.

The Passé Composé consists out of three parts
1. A Pronoun
2. Avoir or Être in the Present Tense
3. A Past Participle

Imagine that I wish to say “I spoke”.
How would I do this?

1. je
The pronoun for I in French is je.

2. ai
Conjugating avoir in the I form will lead to ai.

3. parlé
The past participle of parler is parlé.

So when you wish to say “I spoke” in French you get: J’ai parlé
