The pronoun “y” can be used to replace the word “there”.

➖Je vais à l’école. – J’y vais.
I am going to school. – I am going there.

➖Nous allons en France. Nous y allons.
We are going to France. We are going there.

➖Vous allez chez lui ? Oui, j’y vais !
Are you going to his place? Yes, I am going there!

❗️You cannot use “y” to replace de + a place.
❗️You have to use “en” to replace de + place.

➖Est-ce qu’elle vient de l’université ? Oui, elle en vient.
Is she coming from the university? Yes, she is coming from there.

You have to use indirect object pronouns (lui, leur), with verbs followed by the preposition "à".
The French preposition "à" means “to” in English.

*️⃣parler à
➖Je parle à mes parents. – Je leur parle.
I am talking to my parents. – I am talking to them.

*️⃣donner à
➖Je lui donne mon vélo.
I am giving him my bicycle.

*️⃣demander à
➖Je vais lui demander cela.
I am going to ask him that.

As you can see, lui can mean him or her, depending on the context.
However, leur is used for both men and women.

What does «je m'en fous» mean?

The literal meaning is:
*️⃣ Je → I
*️⃣ M’en fous → Am f**king it

It’s a famous and very used expression that means for us: “I don’t care“.

It’s useful to know that a “polite” way of saying it exists and it’s “Peu importe” (It doesn’t matter much), "Ça m’est égal" (“It’s egal to me“) is quite polite too.
