David Horowitz, RIP

On April 29, David Horowitz died. Horowitz, a professed "red diaper baby" raised by communists, became a prominent leftist campus radical and Marxist intellectual. He became close friends with Huey Newton, the founder of the Black Panthers. But in the 1980s, Horowitz had a change of heart and eventually rejected leftism and socialism, even publishing an article in The Village Voice in 1986 entitled "Why I Am No Longer a Leftist." Less well-known in recent years, Horowitz was a prominent and strident anti-communist in the '80s and '90s, and also one of the most vocal public voices against what was then called "political correctness" — now known as "wokeism." A defender of gun rights and supporter of Donald Trump, Horowitz never overcame his leftist impulses entirely, describing himself as a "moderate" on abortion and as sympathetic with "gay rights." Nevertheless, his renunciation of his radical roots and denunciation of communist subversion are reminiscent of a penitent ex-leftist of an earlier era, Whittaker Chambers.
