Having worked for a few weeks on Arduino now, it got ever more present on my mind. The sketches there interface with nothing more than a bootloader. Driving a little OLED panel with them, also raised the issue of driving that display and shutting it down safely. The code stops running when the power is removed, not before that. It's like a calculator with even the stack error non-existent...

The recipes are provided by the user. The goal isn't to provide recipes to the user. Most bakers have their own recipes or know what works well, for everything else there's an auto importer which takes in a URL to a recipe site, imports the recipe, and helps the user create ingredients that don't exist in their datbase yet.

It talks about the reasoning on the about page, but the tl;dr is that there is an existing platform that's sunsetting on the 30th or 31st and is leaving a lot of bakers without their favorite tool. The home baking industry is actually massive. It really took off during COVID and has kind of stuck around. Additionally a lot of home/cottage bakers juggle a whole bunch of different tools in order to run their small businesses, so I'm bringing all of those tools into one place.

Come to think of it, I guess even modern PCs need to have an ACPI signal to remove power... Init can control all the processes in userspace, and along with the kernel it manages the physical machine (assuming Linux). But if both init and kernel want to shut down, how do they tell the physical machine to remove their own power supply?

Bit of an odd question perhaps, but have any of you ever had to deal with software that "cannot exit" so far? The kind of code that needs an indefinite loop just to serve as an "exit" to that? How do you envision that kind of code? A safe remnant to never run but guaranteed to be able to exit safely? A forgotten artefact to just never run? Something else still?
