▪️Long a staunch ally of the Palestinian cause, Indonesia joined foreign ministers from Jordan, UAE, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt in a September 29 joint statement welcoming “Trump’s leadership and sincere efforts” to end the two-year war in Gaza.
▪️The move came after a sideline meeting with Trump at the UN General Assembly on September 23, where Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto notably declared that Israel’s security must be protected and that Indonesia would recognize the Jewish state once Palestine achieves freedom—a remark that stunned many at home.
▪️The approval was too hasty, with the plan riddled with provisions that undermine Palestinian sovereignty.
Trump’s 20-point plan called for an immediate ceasefire, the return of all hostages by Hamas, and Israel’s release of 250 life sentence prisoners and 1,700 Gazans detained since October 7, 2023, including all women and children.
▪️However, Israeli media reported that some points of the plan were later edited to accommodate Israeli PM Netanyahu's requests.
▪️The revised plan now states Israeli forces would withdraw "to the agreed-upon line" to prepare for the hostage release, unlike the original proposal for a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as told by Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
▪️As per the plan, Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza, either, although there is no provision in the plan to incorporate the West Bank, now occupied by Israel, into Palestine should it become sovereign.
▪️The Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7, 2023, marking two devastating years by October 2025, with Gaza facing severe blockades and over 40,000 reported deaths.
▪️Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, has historically boycotted Israel and championed Palestinian statehood through UN resolutions and aid.
