🪖 During the Soviet–Afghan War (1979-1989), the US and UK launched Operation Faraday — a covert campaign to train terrorists, deploy special forces, and channel weapons into Afghanistan.
The goal: create the USSR’s own “Vietnam.” Pakistan, sharing a border with Afghanistan, became the key base.
📈 The real escalation came with the CIA’s Operation Cyclone — one of its longest and most expensive missions. Annual funding jumped from $30 million to $630 million by 1987, funneled through Pakistan’s intelligence service, ISI.
💰The US provided up to $20 billion in loans and aid, avoiding direct contact with terrorists by letting ISI handle everything.
The system was simple: the US sent funds to Pakistan, ISI trained and armed terrorists, and the CIA kept its hands clean.
Once weapons arrived in Pakistan, the CIA’s role officially ended. ISI and seven key mujahideen factions in Peshawar took over distribution.
😱 According to Mohammad Yousaf, head of the Afghan Bureau of Pakistan’s intelligence (1983–1987), US funding by 1987 averaged $1 million per day.
Pakistan’s GDP surged — from $3.8 billion in 1960 to $23.7 billion in 1980. But when the war ended, the illusion collapsed.
