The first edition of these short course notes was prepared by Woodward and Boyer for the SE section meeting of the Geological Society of America held in Knoxville, Tennessee, March 1985, and published as Dept. of Geol. Sci. Studies in Geology, v. 11. The Structural Geology and Tectonics Division of the GSA subsequently invited Woodward, Boyer and Suppe to present a two day short course at the National Geological Society of America meeting in Orlando, Florida, November 1985 (v. 11, 2nd edition). We are extremely pleased to be able to participate in the International Geological Congress and have completely revised the present course notes

In this Special Issue, we particularly invite any case study of mineral deposits, in which it has been demonstrated that structural geology may have a significant role in the establishment of the deposit model of formation and/or on exploration and exploitation programs. Examples in which the structural model diverges from those described in the classical literature are particularly welcomed, including studies in which relationships with magmatism can be suspected and/or demonstrated. Indeed, all cases that illustrate concepts that differ from the classic ones and from theoretical models may represent significant contributions to this volume.

Hydrothermal mineralization is usually structurally controlled so it is important to understand the role of faulting and fracturing in enhancing rock permeability and facilitating fluid flow and mass transfer. This is the main theme of this interdisciplinary volume and the papers included are intended to provide an overview of current ideas at the interfaces of structural geology, fluid flow and mineralization research. The volume includes some speculative but provocative ideas which should stimulate a re-examination of existing concepts regarding fluid flow in fracture systems and the genesis of hydrothermal mineral deposits.
