Let's not pretend what is happening in Syria is none of our doing.
Successive British governments have been actively working for over a decade to destabilise Syria and topple the government. ('Secure a transition' they have called it, doublespeak for 'regime change'.)
Well now we seem to be getting our way. Which is also the way of Israel, the US and the EU. An impoverished Syria, weakened by years of sanctions - the heaviest sanctions ever imposed on any country - has struggled to maintain a capable army and relied crucially on Hizbollah and Russia to back it up.
With Hizbollah weakened by Israeli attacks on it and Russia distracted by Ukraine, the Syrian Taliban (that's what the motley crew of jihadis really are), armed by NATO member Turkey, trained in information warfare by the UK, and funded by Qatar, have seized the moment. This is exactly what a decade long Whitehall policy of destabilising Syria was designed to produce.
So we must now accept our share of the responsibility for the horrors unfolding and set to get worse: beheadings, massacres, ethnic cleansing, mass population displacement, bombing, terrorism etc.
We must also stand by to see the backwash lapping up on our own shores as fresh waves of migrants flee Syria: a classic case of our own imperialist meddling leading to illegal migration.
Syria is down but not out. Syrian forces will regroup and recover lost territory. But only at the cost of massive suffering and bloodshed.
It's late now but the British government should immediately and as a minimum lift sanctions, put Hayat Tahrir Al Shams (HTS) on its proscribed list, and drop once and for all the policy of destabilising Syria.
