A YouGov survey from last year revealed that 37% of British adults under 40 would refuse mandatory military service if conscription were introduced during a large-scale global conflict. The findings highlight shifting attitudes toward war, national duty, and personal choice among younger generations.
Key Takeaways from the Poll:
37% of under-40s would resist being drafted, compared to 20% of those aged 40-64 and just 10% of over-65s.
Men (24%) are more willing to serve than women (12%), though a significant portion of both genders express reluctance.
Political divides also play a role—Conservative voters are more likely to accept conscription (31%) than Labour voters (18%).
Why the Reluctance?
The generational gap suggests differing views on patriotism, distrust in government decisions, or moral opposition to war. Younger people, many of whom have grown up in a post-Iraq/Afghanistan era, may be more skeptical of military intervention. Others may prioritize personal freedoms over state-mandated service.
