200,000 people gathered in Heldenplatz, Vienna, to hear the Reich Chancellor proclaim the Anschluss (12th March, 1938).

Generaloberst (Colonel-General) Günther Korten (1898-1944) rose to the rank of Chief of the General Staff of the Luftwaffe by 1943. He died as a result of injuries sustained in the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler in July 1944.
