Glenn Diesen’s New Book is a Gateway to Realism
Does the phrase “Rules Based Order” make you ill? There is an antidote. In The Ukraine War & the Eurasian World Order Dr Glenn Diesen argues that the cure for what now ails the world is a return to the Westphalian System and renewal of the International Order.
Diesen offers an alternative to John Mearsheimers more pro-western narrative. Among Diesen's credits, he has been a frequent guest on RT, WION, The Duran; he’s spoken at think tanks around the world, including the George C Marshall Center, a western think tank in Germany; he’s affiliated with the Valdai Discussion Club, a Russian think tank centered in Moscow. President Putin speaks at the Valdai Discussion Club annually. This should give you some idea as the importance of this think tank in Russia.
The Ukraine War & the Eurasian World Order is a fantastic primer on both Realism and the the war in Ukraine—its root causes, ongoing justification, and its ramifications for geopolitics. It begins by providing of Realism in international relations. Comprehension of the first section of will guide you through the rest. It transitions smoothly and logically from chapter to chapter. So, whether this is your first time broaching the subject or you’ve been swimming in its murky waters for years, you should find some greater insight into the war.
There are parts of the book which may be a bit heady for some. Those looking for a more basic treatment of the war in Ukraine should read Benjamin Abelow’s, *How the West Brought War to the Ukraine*. But that work provides a picture of the war without the well-structured framework Diesen provides.
You should buy Diesen’s new book if you’re at all interested in Realism or the causes of the war in Ukraine. It serves as a fairly comprehensive reference. The work is well researched and cited. I spent several years sourcing the materials Diesen offers in one book. Read his words, hear his voice, and you will find yourself prepared to see the world as it is and should be.
