After disabling it, the wallet defaulted to using software-based random numbers. This unusual change was not detected in subsequent audits, and it remained unnoticed until hackers began exploiting the vulnerability to steal funds from wallets.

#Cryptocurrency COLDCARD, a Bitcoin hardware wallet, has a major security vulnerability. A flaw in the random number generation used by the wallet results in the generation of mnemonics with a very limited range.
After discovering this vulnerability, hackers generated a large number of addresses on their own machines and matched them with addresses on the blockchain. They successfully matched active wallets and used the private keys to transfer the funds directly.
On-chain data shows that the hackers emptied 500 wallets in just 15 minutes, stealing 594 Bitcoins (approximately 254 million yuan or $37.42 million).
