How India strengthens presence in Pacific Island nations
India's cooperation with Pacific Island nations has expanded and deepened significantly since the establishment of the Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) under the Modi government in 2014.
This aligns with India's "Act East" policy, which underscores the strategic importance of the region.
Key approaches used by India:
India's Constructive Role
▪️As a "leading voice" of the Global South, India positions itself as a partner that shares common challenges and development aspirations with Pacific Island countries. This shared identity enables India to advocate for their interests on global platforms.
Solid Foundations in Key Sectors
▪️Initiatives such as India's support for telemedicine and digital education have bridged health and education gaps in remote island communities. Furthermore, Pacific Island countries have become members of India's International Solar Alliance, fostering renewable energy collaboration.
Infrastructure Investments
▪️India's plans to invest in infrastructure projects, including ports and transport network , promote economic integration.
▪️While Pacific Island countries occupy a land mass of only 300,000 square miles, their total exclusive economic zone(EEZ) spans 7.7 million square miles of ocean.
Towards Greater People-to-People Engagement
▪️Strengthening people-to-people ties is one of the most effective ways to deepen India's influence in the Pacific Islands. The signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the University of the South Pacific and Indian universities can enable joint research and academic exchanges.
Addressing Governance Challenges
▪️Many of Pacific Island nations face challenges such as weak institutions, limited resources, and vulnerability to corruption.
India's experience in decentralised governance at the community level provides a model that can be tailored to suit the unique conditions of Pacific Island countries.
_”In view of the current security environment, enhanced cohesiveness of the global community is the need of the hour. India is emerging as a leading voice for the Global South and advocates for a multi-aligned policy approach._
