Florida Officials Investigate Report of Manatee With ‘Trump’ on Its Back
(HOMOSASSA SPRINGS, Fla.) — State and federal wildlife officials are investigating reports of a manatee found with “Trump” drawn on its back in a Florida river.
The aquatic mammal was spotted over the weekend in the Homosassa River in Citrus County, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed. The area is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Tampa.
“West Indian manatees are essential members of the ecosystems in which they inhabit and are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act,” USFWS Director Aurelia Skipwith said in a statement.

The manatee does not appear to be seriously injured, officials said. It appears that the word was written in algae that had grown on the animal’s back, not scratched into its skin.
Wildlife officials are looking for any information regarding the animal’s harassment. Tips can be reported at 888-404-3922. The Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit group that protects endangered animals, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case.
Harassing a manatee, a federal crime, is punishable by a $50,000 fine and up to one year in prison.

Republican Congressman Tom Reed said in a New York Times opinion piece that he would join an unspecified number of House colleagues in introducing a censure resolution against Trump on Tuesday as an alternative to a “hasty impeachment.”
“If our leaders make the wrong decision in how to hold him accountable, it could damage the integrity of our system of justice, further fan the flames of division, and disillusion millions of Americans ─ all while failing to accomplish anything,” Reed wrote.

Twitter Bans Trump, Others, Citing Risk of Violent Incitement
Social platform has been under growing pressure to take further action against Trump following Wednesday's assault on US Capitol
Trump, banned from Twitter for his false, incendiary comments alleging election fraud, has not publicly commented on the effort to impeach him a second time, which would give him a singular distinction among 45 U.S. presidents in the 245-year history of the United States.
The House impeached him the first time in late 2019, accusing him of trying to get Ukraine to dig up dirt on Biden ahead of last November’s election, but the Senate acquitted him in early February.
At last Wednesday's rally near the White House, Trump told several thousand people, “If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”
The largely white mob that walked to the Capitol quickly overwhelmed police there, storming inside in droves, breaking windows, ransacking some congressional offices and scuffling with security officials.
Dozens of Trump supporters have been arrested, and authorities are scouring security videos and social media accounts the rioters posted of themselves inside the Capitol to identify other wrongdoers. Five people died in the mayhem, including a police officer whose death is being investigated as a homicide.
Trump has refused to concede his defeat or congratulate Biden, but he has acknowledged there will be a “new administration” come January 20.
Trump has announced that he will not attend Biden’s inauguration, ignoring a long-standing tradition in the United States of an outgoing chief executive witnessing his successor take office as a show of the peaceful transition of power in the U.S. democracy.
Pence, however, does plan to attend the ceremony, which will be downscaled significantly because of the surging number of coronavirus cases in the United States.

Malaysian King Declares State of Emergency Amid Rising COVID-19 Infections
Malaysia’s king has declared a national state of emergency as part of an effort to curb the growing numbers of novel coronavirus infections.
The royal palace announced Tuesday that King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah issued the decree after meeting with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. King Abdullah had rejected a request by Prime Minister Muhyiddin back in October to issue a similar order due to the COVID-19 pandemic
The emergency order suspends parliament until August 1 and gives the prime minister’s government broad authority to enact laws.
In a televised address, Muhyiddin attempted to assure the nation that the state of emergency was “not a military coup” and that no curfew would be enforced during that period. He had issued a two-week lockdown for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, and five surrounding states Monday as the number of total COVID-19 cases has grown over 138,000, including 555 deaths, with the number of daily new cases rising to well over 2,000 in recent weeks.
The emergency also gives the embattled prime minister a reprieve from growing calls in parliament for a special election. Muhyiddin has been prime minister since February, when he was chosen by King Abdullah after then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad unexpectedly resigned and his government collapsed.
Muhyiddin’s politically divided ruling coalition has left him with a shaky hold on power. The United Malays National Organization, the coalition’s largest party, has threatened to withdraw support from the prime minister. And veteran opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim met with the king back in September and said he gave him the names of 120 members of the 222-seat parliament who are ready to defect from the prime minister’s razor-thin coalition.

Following the imposition of a new lockdown, Fitch Solutions cut Malaysia’s 2021 real gross domestic product forecast to 10% from 11.5% earlier. The restrictions announced Monday will likely last longer than the initial two-week period, it said in a report, adding the previous lockdown that ended in June lasted close to a quarter and was implemented after a far milder outbreak than the current wave.

The palace statement called the emergency “a proactive measure to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.” Muhyiddin said flooding in a number of states also contributed to the need for increased powers in addition to the virus.
“The virus cases continue to rise and show no signs of coming down in the near term,” Muhyiddin said. “Hence, the government needs certain powers to ensure that the virus can be efficiently curbed and to ensure that the health services do not get crippled.”

Malaysia’s King Suspends Parliament for First Time Since 1961 for COVID-19 Emergency
Malaysia’s king declared a nationwide state of emergency for the first time in more than half a century, suspending parliament in a move that allows embattled Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to avoid facing an election until the pandemic is over.
The emergency decree gives Muhyiddin’s administration more power to tackle a surge in Covid-19 cases, including over the operations of private hospitals, and may allow the police and military to assist in public health measures. The ringgit and the country’s main stocks index declined after the announcement, which came a day after Muhyiddin imposed a two-week targeted lockdown in most of the country starting Wednesday.
In a briefing on Tuesday, the prime minister said he may introduce measures like price controls to prevent economic sabotage. An independent committee would be established to advise the king on the duration of the emergency, which was set to expire on Aug. 1 unless the outbreak abates sooner. Elections would be held as soon as an independent committee declares that the pandemic has subsided and it’s safe to hold a vote, Muhyiddin said.
“The emergency proclaimed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not a military coup and curfew will not be enforced,” he said in a national address, referring to the monarch. “I emphasize that Malaysia is open for business. In facing these challenging times, this period of emergency will give us much needed calm and stability, as well as enable us to focus on economic recovery and regeneration.”
Opposition politicians criticized the move, blaming Muhyiddin for failing to contain a surge of Covid-19 cases in recent months and then using the pandemic as an excuse to stay in power. New infections hit a record high last week, and the tally stood at little over 2,000 on Monday. The government has forecast daily cases to reach 8,000 by late March or late May, based on a predictive modeling analysis.
“Policy flip-flops, double-standards and sheer incompetency” led to the surge in cases, according to Lim Guan Eng, secretary-general of the opposition Democratic Action Party, the largest in parliament. He said Muhyiddin’s government had failed to implement effective measures due to “endless politicking for survival.”
The ringgit fell as much as 0.6% to 4.0760 per dollar, the weakest since Dec. 7, while government bonds extended losses. Malaysia’s main stock index fell as much as 1.6%, led by banks including CIMB Group Holdings Bhd.
Malaysia last saw a nationwide emergency in 1969, when race riots between ethnic Malays and Chinese led to the suspension of parliament for two years. The announcement of the emergency on Tuesday brought back memories of that “very traumatic period,” said Bridget Welsh, honorary research associate at the Asia Research Institute, University of Nottingham Malaysia.
“I see this as completely unnecessary from a Covid-19 perspective,” Welsh said. “It is a political move to hold on to political power.”
The emergency declared on Tuesday puts off any risk of an election for Muhyiddin, who has held a slim majority in parliament since taking power last year following the collapse of a previous coalition government. In October, the king rebuffed Muhiyddin’s attempt to place the entire country under emergency ahead of a major budget vote — a test of confidence that he ended up passing.
Still, calls had risen in recent weeks for a fresh election. Some key members of the largest party in his ruling coalition, the United Malays National Organisation, had called for a snap poll by March.

US House Moves to Remove Trump from Office
The Democrat-majority U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote Tuesday on a resolution calling for Vice President Mike Pence and members of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet to use their constitutional authority to remove Trump from office.
The measure, which is expected to pass, sets a 24-hour deadline for Pence to respond.

“The President represents an imminent threat to our Constitution, our Country and the American people, and he must be removed from office immediately,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement Monday.
Neither Pence nor any Cabinet member has given public indication of supporting such action involving the 25th Amendment’s provision allowing for the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
Trump and Pence met late Monday at the White House for the first time since pro-Trump rioters attacked the U.S. Capitol last week.
A senior administration official said the two “reiterated that those who broke the law and stormed the Capitol last week do not represent the America first movement backed by 75 million Americans, and pledged to continue the work on behalf of the country for the remainder of their term.”

House leaders are also pushing ahead with a separate impeachment resolution that lawmakers are scheduled to begin considering Wednesday morning.
Even though Trump’s four-year term expires at noon January 20, the four-page impeachment resolution said Trump has “demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law.”
The four-page impeachment resolution cites Trump’s unfounded accusations that he was cheated out of a second four-year term by vote and vote-counting irregularities, his pressure on election officials in the southern state of Georgia to “find” him more than 11,000 votes to overtake Biden’s margin of victory in the state, and his statements at a rally last Wednesday urging thousands of supporters to march to the Capitol to pressure lawmakers to overturn the election outcome.
A total of 218 Democrats have signed on to the resolution, ensuring a majority in the 435-member House without any Republican votes against the outgoing Republican president.

Pandemic and Political Turmoil Leave Asian Markets Mixed Tuesday
Asian markets are mixed Tuesday as the worsening coronavirus pandemic around the world, coupled with the political turmoil in the United States, is putting a damper on trading activity.
The Nikkei index in Tokyo finished 25 points higher, but was virtually unchanged percentage-wise (+0.09%), while the Shanghai Composite rose 2.1%.
Sydney’s S&P/ASX index lost 0.2%. Seoul’s KOSPI index closed 0.7% lower, while the TSEC index in Taipei was down 0.3%.
Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng index is up 1.1% in late afternoon trading, and Mumbai’s Sensex is 0.3% higher.
In commodities trading, gold is selling at $1,858.80, up 0.4%. U.S. crude oil is selling at $52.65 per barrel, up 0.7%, and Brent crude is selling at $56.01 per barrel, up 0.6%.
The three major U.S. indices -- the Dow, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq -- are all trending positively in futures trading.
