🔴 2024 Mass immigration to Cyprus
>UNHCR
🔸 The Cypriot Government adopted a different stance against immigration in 2024, increasing the patrols to prevent ships carrying illegal immigrants from reaching the island and suspended the review of Asylum Applications to Syrians since May 2024 (🖇 Source)
🔸 Cyprus also adopted policies to revoke the Supplementary Protection Status of immigrants that commit crimes. It is important to note that Cyprus grants more SPS than Refugee Status, which does not grants the same protections as a Refugee status (🖇 Source)
🔸 The Cypriot Government has also been taking deportations more seriously than the rest of Europe
‼️ This led to a reduction of 44.6% in immigration to Cyprus, when the total of 2023 was 11.009 versus the 6.096 of 2024
⚠️ Similarly to Greece, nearly 60% of illegal immigrants are Adult Men, 14.7% are Adult Women and only 25.6% are Minors

🔴 Egypt passed the first law to deal with Asylum Seekers/Illegal Immigrants
>https://archive.is/VluGO
🔸 Egypt approved a law that deal with Asylum for the first time in its history, mainly due to the influx of Sudanese and people from the Gaza strip
‼️ "Human Rights" groups are worried about an article in the law that allows Egyptian authorities to take "necessary measures" against refugees in times of war, during counter-terrorism operations or in response to extraordinary circumstances aimed at ensuring public order and national security
‼️ The law also makes it illegal to help 'asylum seekers' without notifying the authorities and give a deadline of 45 days to apply for asylum after entering Egypt
🔸 According with the Egyptian government, over 1.2 Million Sudanese have moved to the country since 2023

🔴 EU Immigration Commissioner: "It is impossible to deport Syrians at this stage"
>archive.is/dk472
🔸 Magnus Bruner, the European Commissioner for Migration, called for incentives for voluntary returns of Syrians and said that "forcibly deporting them is not feasible at this stage"
🔸 After the Assad Government was overthrown, EU countries have suspended the review of asylum applications of Syrians
⚠️ Austria announced it was preparing a "deportation programme" as "the political situation in Syria has fundamentally changed"
🔸 Brunner and former Austrian Finance Minister (probably Gernot Blümel, not specified in articles) called for "voluntary returns" of Syrians to their home country to be encouraged with financial incentives
‼️ Brunner said: "For the moment, I would say that forced returns are not feasible", underlining how fluid the "situation" in Syria is

‼️ It is worth talking about such subject once it once again exposes the fact that many of these "immigrants" coming to the west are mercenaries and jihadists
🔸 The HTS in particular has a long history of being affiliated with ISIS, while they have also been working with Turkey for a while before being labeled as a Terrorist Organization by the Turks but are still somehow supplied with Turkish weapons

🔸 The issue is not simply regarding spending but it is important to remember that not only does the ministry has funds provided by the Greek Government but it also receives funds from the EU itself

⚠️ Nearly 60% of all immigrants are Adult Men, 15.4% are women and 25.6% are minors

🔴 Difficulties with deportations for EU member-states
🔸 The EU has created restrictions regarding deportations.
🔺 Deportations must:
1️⃣ — Follow EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, such as the right to dignity, protection from inhumane or degrading treatment, and the right to a fair trial
2️⃣ — Follow non-refoulement (Article 33 of the 1951 Refugee Convention) - A person must not be deported to a country where they may face persecution, torture or serious harm
3️⃣ — Return Directive (2008/115/EC)
⚠️3️⃣.1️⃣ — Voluntary return should be picked over forced return whenever possible
3️⃣.2️⃣ — The deportation must be safe and humane, follow due process and individual rights
3️⃣.3️⃣ — The return decision or removal order must be issued after due process
4️⃣ — Mass deportations are illegal:
⚠️4️⃣.1️⃣ — Collective expulsions (deportations of groups without individualized assessments) are prohibited under Article 19(1) of the EU Charter and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
4️⃣.2️⃣ — Each case must be assessed individually, ensuring that the person's situation, vulnerabilities, and risks in the destination country are thoroughly examined
⚠️‼️5️⃣ — Special protections:
5️⃣.1️⃣ — Vulnerable individuals, such as minors, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and victims of trafficking, are afforded additional protections under EU law
⚠️ 5️⃣.2️⃣ — Unaccompanied minors cannot be forcibly returned unless it is demonstrably in their best interest
5️⃣.3️⃣ — Families with children must be kept together and housed in suitable accommodations while awaiting deportation
⚠️ 6️⃣ — Statelessness must be avoided: Deportations must not render an individual stateless. Proof of nationality or legal residence in the destination country must be established before deportation
⚠️ 7️⃣ — Deportations can be suspended in case of:
⚠️7️⃣.1️⃣ — Temporary health issues or severe humanitarian concerns
⚠️7️⃣.2️⃣ — Unstable or dangerous conditions in the destination country (e.g., armed conflicts, environmental disasters).
✳️ — Alternatives to deportations:
1️⃣ — Assisted voluntary return programs, provide financial or logistical support to individuals returning to their home countries
2️⃣ — Monitoring of post-return reintegration to ensure deportees are not subjected to harm (the decision might be overturned)

🔸 Cyprus grants more Subsidiary Protection than Refugee Status, therefore the measure of removing subsidiary protection from those who commit crimes is a measure that will indeed affect the vast majority of illegal immigrants
‼️ In addition to this information, Subsidiary Protection also does not allow immigrants to bring their families to Cyprus unless the immigrant that is bringing his family fits very specific requirements
Greece, Cyprus and Malta, exclude those with subsidiary protection status from family reunification altogether
🔴 Over 50.000 illegal immigrants were registered entering Greece this year so far
🔸 According with UNHCR data, 50.109 illegal immigrants entered Greece in 2024 alone, 43.953 of which entered Greece through the sea and 6.156 through land
‼️ In the same period in 2023, 48.721 illegal immigrants had arrived to Greece
🔸 58,4% of these 50.000 illegal immigrants are Adult Men. Women correspond to only 15,7% and Minors only correspond to 26%
🔸 A report from September shows the nationalities that are granted Asylum the most
🔺The top 10 by success rate:
🇾🇪 Yemen - 99%
🇵🇸 Palestine - 99%
🇦🇫 Afghanistan - 98%
🇸🇩 Sudan - 98%

🇸🇾 Syria - 88%
🇪🇷 Eritrea - 88%
🇮🇶 Iraq - 73%
🇪🇹 Ethiopia - 69%
🇮🇷 Iran - 53%

🔸 The coast guard listed the arrivals to Crete, Pylos, Gytheio and Kalamata as "rescues" once the boats with immigrants are either found after sending distress signals or they were rescued by ships passing by
