🔸 The Cypriot Government adopted a different stance against immigration in 2024, increasing the patrols to prevent ships carrying illegal immigrants from reaching the island and suspended the review of Asylum Applications to Syrians since May 2024 (🖇 Source)

🔸 Cyprus also adopted policies to revoke the Supplementary Protection Status of immigrants that commit crimes. It is important to note that Cyprus grants more SPS than Refugee Status, which does not grants the same protections as a Refugee status (🖇 Source)

🔸 The Cypriot Government has also been taking deportations more seriously than the rest of Europe

‼️ This led to a reduction of 44.6% in immigration to Cyprus, when the total of 2023 was 11.009 versus the 6.096 of 2024

🔸 According with 1951 Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol

1️⃣ — Refugee status can be denied IF —> Exclusion Clauses (Article 1(F)):
1️⃣.1️⃣ — Committed a crime against peace, a war crime, or a crime against humanity
1️⃣.2️⃣ — Committed a serious non-political crime outside the country of refuge before admission as a refugee
1️⃣.3️⃣ — Guilty of acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations

2️⃣ — When can the Refugee status be revoked/ceased (Article 1(C))?

🔸 The EU has created restrictions regarding deportations.

🔺 Deportations must:

1️⃣ — Follow EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, such as the right to dignity, protection from inhumane or degrading treatment, and the right to a fair trial

2️⃣ — Follow non-refoulement (Article 33 of the 1951 Refugee Convention) - A person must not be deported to a country where they may face persecution, torture or serious harm

3️⃣ — Return Directive (2008/115/EC)
⚠️3️⃣.1️⃣ — Voluntary return should be picked over forced return whenever possible
3️⃣.2️⃣ — The deportation must be safe and humane, follow due process and individual rights
3️⃣.3️⃣ — The return decision or removal order must be issued after due process

4️⃣ — Mass deportations are illegal:
⚠️4️⃣.1️⃣ — Collective expulsions (deportations of groups without individualized assessments) are prohibited under Article 19(1) of the EU Charter and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
4️⃣.2️⃣ — Each case must be assessed individually, ensuring that the person's situation, vulnerabilities, and risks in the destination country are thoroughly examined
