"The second of three themed volumes, ‘Slang Blade’ is a no-wave special; a dubwise and aggy post-industrial fantasia that draws lines and parallels between the grot and mangled romance of urban undergrowths in NYC, Tokyo, London, Berlin and Manchester through a screwed spool of angular riffs x decayed soundsystem pressure.
An hour of absolute bullets that arc from the late 70’s through to the mid 80’s, ‘Slang Blade’ is simultaneously the moodiest and most spiky DDS session so far, bending the avant-garde spirit of the OG NYC No-Wavers thru an intercontinental prism that made use of the same bare components: primitive drum machines, jazz skronk, bass guitar, fritzed gear and detached, abrasive vocals.
In the OG spirit of refusing to recycle the same old aesthetic, those components are mostly rendered at their moodiest and most introspective, riding the rhythm into sections of morose and destroyed contemplation where the beat doesn’t so much lurch as pulse into the aether, cloaked in layers of delay. When the rhythm ramps up, it jerks in convulsive style, at once glamorous and full of bile, revelling in a stylistic anti-cohesion that in many respects has been the foundation stone of the whole DDS project.
Reel strong gear, probably the best thing we’ve heard in the whole decade-long run of demdike tapes."

LUCKYME® kick off 2024 with a debut EP from Parisian producer Sunareht. Forged from the scene around Teki Latex and his Sound Pellegrino label, Sunareht - alongside contemporaries Le Dom, To Van Kao, De Grandi and Birol - runs Paradoxe Club, a label championing forward-thinking French dance music. Youth EP is exactly that - six fizzing club cuts that take the familiar “French Touch” sound, before dialling it up to eleven and flinging it into the far future. Samples are chopped into fluttering sequences and married with the glistening, bass-heavy sound design of post-dubstep and hyperpop.

R'n'B from Cassius Select!!!!!!!! fuck me sideways
“I’m trying to make pop music. Not in the industry sense, but in the way that everyone is making their own type of pop music. It wants to be listenable, so it can create emotions. I come from bedroom song writing in the age of the internet. The lyrical content and sounds reflect my demeanor. Big ego with low sense of self-worth. Constantly posturing. At once both strong and weak. I don’t always trust my abilities. I don’t have the voice to produce contemporary radio R&B. I don’t do traditional harmonies, mine are all over the place.
It's the first time I'm writing about my own life in a literal sense. I spent years writing love songs having never been in a relationship. Whereas this feels very raw as a reflection of my experiences. To me the album sounds insular because it was made that way, in isolation. (...) Most of the lyrical content on the album is about dealing with a breakup. But the album doesn’t reflect a break-up because it’s completely one sided. It doesn’t reflect the reality that I was an awful person during the relationship. Really it's an inward study of a reaction to rejection. It’s ambivalent. The attitude is “hey imma do me and improve myself”, while also desperately wanting someone back (for all the wrong reasons). There’s a veneer of self-improvement and healing. But it’s all performance. I used to think all the songs had a kind of toxic intent because of this. Trying to impress someone in a way that would make them want to return to you. In retrospect I understand the songs differently. They’re not perfect. A bit confused in their vulnerability. Maybe quite sweet in a way. I think it’s healthy for me to see the lyrics on the album as directed at myself. It’s an album about self-love. I learnt that making music can be a kind of self-care.".

"This release is probably my most personal to date. I wanted to create something which flows freely whilst interconnected, that is perhaps not possible in Shorter form works. It is a story in eleven parts that focuses on exploring emotional depth; I’ve always been interested in emotion in music, which for anyone reading at a glance could sound self explanatory, but here the focus is really how an story can be told over the course of an hour and how this can then create a longer lasting impact for the listener. The tracks presented weave between a variety of different styles I’ve explored over the years, but are connected via their exploration of ecstatic sorrow and search for catharsis."

Phantom Limb boss and musician James Vella - aka A Lily - announces his first release for the label Saru l-Qamar, setting archival Maltese home recordings to new music for an album of nostalgic quasi-ambience and cross-generational dialogue.
From the 60’s until the modern era, it was common for Maltese families to receive reel tapes from relatives abroad. Maltese emigrés resettled in Australia, the UK, Canada etc. would record their news onto cassette - often in the form of għana, traditional Maltese song - and mail the tapes back home. Amazingly, through the superlative archival work of Malta’s nonprofit heritage foundation Magna Żmien, many of these tapes still exist.
Arranged alongside hardware synthesis and “minimal DAW intervention”, the recordings take on ghostly, spiritual new qualities. Simple storytelling and news-sharing (“there was a burglar in the house yesterday”, “I can’t tell you how much I miss Malta”, “do your utmost to spend all your money at the feast”) become plaintive and evocative elegies for friends and family lost to time. “This is the meaning of the album title,” Vella writes. “Though these people have left us, they can never be truly forgotten, as without them we would not be here. They become part of the fabric of our lives, remaining forever and inexorably within the makeup of every subsequent generation. They have become the moon - always present, but always out of reach.”

This is an archive of material I played live in Automatics Group sets in the mid-2010s. Would recommend dipping in rather than listening all at once. Most sets opened with the Braveheart Slowed video (track 0 here), and ended with the Pryda / N-Trance 3-phase mix (track 12).
I began making these in 2011 but the versions in this archive were all rendered between 2012 & 2016. Most of them are automatically generated - processes made from words and then executed by scripts. As time went on I started to manually remix some of the automatically generated material into more structured tracks, and a few of these are also included.

Читать полностью…"The first in a triptych of mixtapes from Demdike Stare, ‘Feelings’ is a stunning and heady investigation of low lit modal and spiritual Jazz, an emotionally blurred trip into the early hours...
Jazz has long been Demdike’s mutual teacher, underlining the duo’s respective journeys from hip hop and rave in ‘90s mcr, to a growing obsession fostered by years hunting and trading rare nuggets. We may have heard them play some of the numbers harvested here over the years, but we frankly ain’t got a clue what any of it is.
Woven with a judicious use of edits, pedals and alchemical je ne sais woo that makes their transitions bloom, the duo here show their workings out in the margins with a looseness and verve that’s faithful to the medium and styles on show. An educated guess suggests the recordings mostly span the late ‘60s into the ‘80s, time-stamped by the inclusion of electronics that underpin the whole session. But, then again, that could just be several cuts, made decades apart, screwed in real time.
Either way, it makes for engrossed and brooding listening, taking flight into late night zones on the front, before pitching into more radical sonifications of jazz as abstract material and psychedelic, devotional expression on the flip"

‘Ministry of Tall Tales’ is an electronic music composition that reflects on hyperbolic orchestrations of political and social current affairs. In this work, notions such as misinformation/disinformation, biased mental states, bigotry, dogma and ultimately corruption are brainchild of the composer in order to achieve a sonic spirit in abstract form. Ludicrous and distorted human behaviors are told by magnifying musical intervals and entering the spaces in-between, and simultaneously dramatizing subtle microtonal motifs, ultra-fine polyrhythmic, polymetric and polytempic pitched patterns assemble the skeleton of an engine symbolizing various systems.
The configuration and framework of this mechanism represents both harmonious and non-harmonious aspects in society. Rearranging and coloring components of tradition, neglecting moral codes, and separating ingredients of rituals to showcase humankind’s failures and accomplishments.
The composer has been experiencing an immense amount of frustration, anger, confusion, helplessness and fear because of what has been happening in his surroundings and the sociopolitical system. Consequently, the music is contemplations on corruption, oppression and murder.

»Radial« is the result of a vivid creative merge between Esplendor Geométrico and AtomTM. A transparent diamond formed by a heavy implosion. Its underlying massive mechanics are covered by a crystal surface made to cut reality in half. Just one letter short of “radical”, this album is no less than exactly that - an orgy of powerful, blunt repetition and hyperbolic simplicity, a profound evocation of nothingness and its surroundings.

NTS presents European Primitive Guitar, a compilation of instrumental guitar compositions, mapping out the European analogues of the American Primitive Guitar movement, spearheaded by John Fahey in the 1950s.
Released physically and digitally on January 26 2024, European Primitive Guitar spans works directly influenced by and responding to Fahey’s approach to composition, alongside works by artists that arrived at similar conclusions independently. The music is, at once, both starkly traditional and contemporary.
