Sundown Towns
As early as 1714 up until the 1960’s, American states passed policies that outright banned coloreds from their towns, or restricted coloreds from being out passed sundown, hence: Sundown Towns
The earliest ordinance recorded, known as the Act To Prevent Disorders In The Night was in New Hampshire in 1714 which states: Whereas great disorders, insolencies and burglaries are oft times raised and committed in the night time by Indian, Negro, and Molatto Servants and Slaves to the Disquiet and hurt of her Majesty's subjects, No Indian, Negro, or Molatto is to be from Home after 9 o'clock. These ordinances continued decades later and were published in the New Hampshire Gazette.
Virginia was the first state to ban all free negros. In 1844, Oregon had banned negros altogether. Any negro that failed to leave would expect to receive lashings under the “Peter Burnett Lash Law”, named after the provisional supreme judge, Peter Burnett. In 1853, Illinois banned all negros. Any negro caught within the state was subject to being re-enslaved and sold at auction. These trends continued into states such as Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa.
Minden and Gardnerville Nevada had ordinances from 1917 to 1974 that required “native” indians to leave the towns at 6:30pm, sounded by an alarm to remind them. Colorado had signs that said “no mexicans after night”, while Connecticut signs said “Whites Only Within City Limits After Dark”. From 1851 to 1876, Antioch, California had a sundown ordinance that banned chinese residents after dark. In 1876, White residents drove the chinese out of town and then burned down the Chinatown section of the city.
James W. Loewen states from his own research: “From Maine to California, thousands of communities kept out African Americans (or sometimes chinese, jews, etc.) by force, law, or custom. Some towns are still all White on purpose.... I have found more than 440 in Illinois and thousands across the United States.”
Sundown Towns were an appropriate response to the rising tide of color to ensure the safety and homogeny of White towns. As sundown towns declined, and the color line began to fade away, crime and immigration began to rise and the excellence of our ancestors became overrun with foreign filth. Our White American ancestors established sundown towns for our own protection and well being, and when that protection dissipated our livelihood was threatened.
