The damaged pillar commemorates king Elisedd, son of Gwylog, who ruled the Welsh kingdom of Powys between the years 725 and 755. The events in question may have occurred around the year 743, when The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that kings Aethelbald of Mercia and Cuthred of Wessex carried out a joint military campaign against the Welsh. The Celtic inhabitants of Wales were resurgent at this time, so much so, that one of Aethelbald’s successors felt compelled to built a massive system of bank and ditch fortifications to delineate and control the frontier, in an attempt to stop or reduce the constant Welsh raids into English territory; this is known as Offa’s Dyke (last two pictures).
