What is the difference between "
l used to " and "
I would" ?
Both "I used to" and "I would" can be used to talk about past habits or actions, but there are some key differences between them:
1. Specificity of time frame:
"I used to": This phrase implies a regular or habitual action that happened over a period of time in the past and no longer happens in the present. It doesn't require specifying the exact timeframe.
Example: "I used to play basketball every day after school when I was younger." (This doesn't say for how long, just that it was a regular habit in the past.)
"I would": This phrase can also describe repeated actions in the past, but it doesn't necessarily emphasize the habit and can be used for specific instances within a timeframe. It's often used in narratives or hypothetical situations.
Example: "Every Sunday, I would visit my grandparents and we would bake cookies together." (This emphasizes specific occurrences on Sundays.)
2. State vs. action verbs:
"I used to": This phrase can be used with both action verbs (describing things you did) and state verbs (describing how you were).
Action: "I used to wake up early to go running."
State: "I used to be afraid of the dark."
"I would": This phrase is typically used with action verbs, not state verbs (though there are some exceptions).
Action: "I would spend hours reading comics as a child." (Action: reading)
NOT: "I would be happy all the time." (State: happy)
3. Formality:
"I used to": This phrase is considered more neutral and informal than "I would."
"I would": This phrase can sometimes sound more formal or literary, especially in narratives.
Additional notes:
You can sometimes use "I would" to create a hypothetical situation about the past, even if it didn't actually happen.
Example: "If I had known it would rain, I would have brought an umbrella."
"Used to" can also be used in negative sentences ("I didn't use to like coffee").
