In many parts of the world, there is a growing focus on building houses, and these developments often come at the expense of a city’s natural environment, such as parks and farmlands. While this can help address housing shortages and revitalize areas, the loss of green spaces in cities can negatively affect the environment and people’s mental well-being. Therefore, it is a negative development overall.

The shortage of housing is one of the biggest problems facing many cities today. Turning underutilized parks and farmland into apartment blocks can help meet the increasing demand for housing, especially in densely-populated areas. The creation of housing can alleviate the housing crises not only by directly offering accommodation to people who are willing to buy one, but also by increasing the availability of options, which can lead to more affordable housing prices in an area, allowing people from low-income backgrounds to get on the property ladder.

Additionally, the introduction of housing in the form of apartment blocks and skyscrapers often leads to the overall development of the area for the residents. This is because with these usually come many more amenities, including shopping malls, playgrounds, recreational facilities, and parking spaces. These improvements generally contribute to a higher quality of life. By contrast, in many towns, residents often complain about the lack of such opportunities, having to commute to access them in another part of the city.

However, I believe prioritizing urban development neglecting the natural environment can have some serious repercussions for an area in the long run. Firstly, environmental degradation is a major concern, the effects of which are twofold. Once green spaces are reduced or completely gone, this can lead to the deterioration of air quality. The situation is even worsened by population growth that comes with the increased usage of cars and depletion of natural resources.

Moreover, the lack or disappearance of green spaces can have less obvious but severe effects on people. City life has long been associated with increased stress levels, anxiety, and depression in people and having access to parks and gardens can serve as a perfect counterbalance. If people are deprived of these places due to urbanization, this can have a huge impact on people’s mental well-being.

In conclusion, there are the potential benefits to the construction of housing at the cost of parks and farmlands, such as the mitigation of housing problems and improved quality of life. That said, the negative consequences of such a development are more significant, considering its impact on the environment and people’s mental health. Therefore, urban designers should not disregard the importance of green spaces in cities.

The two maps illustrate how the town of Pebbleton has changed since 20 years ago. Overall, the town, especially the peninsula, has become more residential and recreational as new housing as well as entertainment facilities have been constructed. Additionally, with the introduction of the footbridge, the town became more accessible.

The Pebbleton peninsula used to include only a few facilities 20 years ago. There was a lighthouse in the North-West corner with an old fort nearby and the film studio to the South-West opposite. The Old Fort road crossed the town in the middle, to the South of which was located a playground close to the film studio. The lighthouse lane, which led to the row of houses to the North, formed a junction with the Old Fort Road. Moving to the East, trees dominated the landscape on either side of the road and to the end of the Old Fort Road was a roundabout. One exit of the roundabout was a roadbridge, which was connected to the Coast Road. Finally, school was situated on the coast surrounded by trees.

Since then, the town has undergone significant changes. While the lighthouse remained intact, the old fort has gone and in its place is a new children’s playground, and the film studio has been replaced by flats. Moreover, tennis courts were built near the junction and community center and additional housing were constructed to the North. The construction of the new footbridge now means students can access school directly from the town, instead of taking the Roadbridge. These changes, however, did not come at the expense of the trees that surrounded the city 20 years ago.

IELTS with SANOKULOV

Although doctors emphasize the importance of doing regular exercises for old people, these recommendations seem to be neglected by the majority of the elderly. While this can be attributed to social norms in some countries and a lack of sporting facilities, changing our attitude towards older people and providing sufficient opportunities for exercise can improve the situation.

Deeply embedded social norms can be one factor preventing older people from doing physical activities. In many cultures, older people are expected to spend their retirement in a rather conventional way: by taking care of grandchildren, socializing with friends and neighbors, or relaxing at home. Take my country – Uzbekistan. Old people who want to do something unconventional with their free time by going to the cinema or doing sports are often met with criticism by friends and relatives. Knowing this, most old people feel reluctant to do sports.

Additionally, despite the recent changes to urban designs, many areas, especially those far from the city, still fail to offer enough sporting facilities. People from these places usually have to commute to the gym spending much time and energy. This extra burden can deter people from engaging in sports, regardless of their age.

However, there are several ways by which the situation can be alleviated. One requires a major shift in our attitude towards older people who want to exercise. If family members and friends were more supportive of them, old people would feel more encouraged and obligated to take physical activities. This support can take various forms, such as hiring a personal trainer, buying a gym subscription, or exercising together.

Moreover, offering enough exercise opportunities should be prioritized by urban engineers. Once the government ensures that there is a gym or pitch within walking distance, people, whether they be older or younger, are likely to become more willing to do sports. Having sporting facilities nearby can also help create a culture, in which doing sports is viewed positively, encouraging people to do it more.

In conclusion, the main reasons behind the unpopularity of sports among the elderly are societal norms and insufficient sporting facilities. However, once we change our view of the elderly and provide them with enough opportunities for engaging in physical exercise, they might become more encouraged to do sports.

People these days seem to avoid forming relationships with their neighbors. While this can be attributed to the hectic lifestyles of many people and poor community designs, organizing social events and reshaping the urban design can improve the situation.

Many people are too busy to meet their neighbors. Most of them spend the whole week working or studying, which leaves little to no time for making new friends or meeting up with other people. Even when they have free time, people often prioritize other responsibilities, such as enjoying the company of close friends and family, personal development, or simply engaging in hobbies. All these factors mean most people neither have desire nor time to socialize with their neighbors.

Additionally, the generic designs of many neighborhoods do little to improve the situation. In recent years, there has been a focus on functionality and efficiency of neighborhood plans. These ‘clever’ designs often involve creating housing and other amenities, such as supermarkets and parking spaces, for residents but urban engineers usually neglect the importance of communal spaces or gathering spots, where neighbors can naturally meet and socialize.

However, there are a number of steps which can be taken to tackle the problem. One is more social events should be organized in neighborhoods. These gatherings can bring people together through music, food, sport, and entertainment. Take my country – Uzbekistan. Residents in most neighborhoods actively celebrate national holidays such as ‘Navruz’, which marks the spring equinox, by organizing a party and cooking. This event helps to strengthen bonds among neighbors by uniting them.

Moreover, governments should take a radical approach to reforming urban designs. When people live in an environment that encourages socialization rather than isolation, they are more likely to engage in an interaction with other people. For instance, establishing more shared spaces like gardens, playgrounds, or even a plot for farming can improve the chances of neighbors meeting each other more frequently.

In conclusion, the main reasons behind the lack of neighbor interaction are the busy lifestyles of people and inadequate urban environments that do not naturally foster social connections. However, once people are encouraged to know each other through celebrations and appropriate community infrastructure, people are likely to become more willing to build connections with their neighbors.
