The newer Merkavas weigh 63-65tons, have a ~70mm steel armor plate (there's no uranium nuclear neutron laser armor) protecting the forward mounted engine, with a bit of extra thickness protecting the driver sitting to the left of the engine. They also use the American M60 engine. The M60 weighed only 49tons.
The turret does have composite armor for additional protection from HEAT rounds.
Their mass and powerplant is likely why they're transported on flatbeds, despite the country being the size of New Jersey. I don't know how many spare engines they've got lying around.
e: the M60 uses a 750hp version of the engine and the Merkava 3 uses a 1,200hp version of the AV1790.
