⚡️The forgotten Sunnah: Making Duaa in the Prayers
بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد
📚[Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen of Shaikh al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله (2/95)]
In the night prayers (Taraaweeh/Tahajjud), if a person passes by a verse about Mercy, then he should pause and beseech (Allaah for it). For example: If he passes by a verse which mentions about Paradise (and its blessings), he should pause and say: “O Allaah make me one of its dwellers, O Allaah I beseech You the Jannah.” And when he passes by a verse containing threat [1], he should pause and say: “I seek refuge in Allaah from this; I seek refuge in Allaah from the Fire.” And if he passes by the verses which contains Allaah’s Praises, meaning, the verses which mentions His سبحانه وتعالى Magnificence, and Glorification, he should pause and Glorify Allaah (by saying Subhaan-Allaah, wal-Hamdulillaah etc.) and all this in the night prayers.
As for the Obligatory prayers, there is no problem if he does this, but it is not from the Sunnah (to do it in the obligatory prayers). So if he does this, he should not be stopped. And if he does not do it, he should not be commanded to do it except in the night prayers, because it is preferred that he does that in the night prayers – i.e. seek Allaah’s refuge at the verses of threat, and ask Allaah at the verses of Mercy, and Glorify Allaah at the verses of which contains Praises for Him تعالى.
***
[1] Every Aayah which mentions the Hell and its horror, and which contains admonition and the threat that Allaah’s curse will be upon them or that Allaah will seal their hearts etc.
[2] Some Ahaadeeth:
Narrated Awf ibn Maalik رضي الله عنه: I stood up to pray along with the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم; he got up and recited Surah al-Baqarah. When he صلى الله عليه وسلم came to a verse which spoke of mercy, he stopped and made supplication, and when he came to verse which spoke of punishment, he stopped and sought refuge in Allaah, then he صلى الله عليه وسلم bowed as long as he stood (the bowing was as long the standing), and said while bowing: “Glory be to the Possessor of Greatness, the Kingdoms, Grandeur and Majesty.” Then he صلى الله عليه وسلم prostrated as long as he stood up and recited the same (as he صلى الله عليه وسلم did in bowing) and then he stood up and recited Surah Aal-Imraan and then recited many Surahs one after another.
📚[Sunan Abu Dawood (873), Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (1132) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
It was narrated from Hudaifah رضي الله عنه that he prayed beside the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم one night. He صلى الله عليه وسلم recited, and when he صلى الله عليه وسلم came to a verse that mentioned punishment, he صلى الله عليه وسلم would pause and seek refuge with Allaah; if he صلى الله عليه وسلم came to a verse that mentioned mercy, he صلى الله عليه وسلم would pause and pray for mercy. In his bowing he would say: 'Subhaana Rabbil-Adheem (Glory be to my Lord Almighty)' and in his prostration he would say: 'Subhaana Rabbil-Alaa (Glory be to my Lord the Most High).’”
📚[Sunan al-Nasaa’ee (1009)]
It was narrated from Hudhaifah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed, and when he صلى الله عليه وسلم recited a verse which mentioned mercy, he صلى الله عليه وسلم would ask for mercy, when he recited a Verse that mentioned punishment he would pray for deliverance from it; and when he recited a Verse that mentioned the Tanzeeh+ of Allaah, he would glorify Him
📚[Sunan Ibn Maajah (1351)]
👉+ Tanzeeh: To declare Allaah to be free of imperfection and everything falsely attributed to Him, such as having a son, partner of the trinity etc.
Narrated Hudhaifah رضي الله عنه: I prayed with the Apostle of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم one night and he started reciting al-Baqarah. I thought that he would bow at the end of one hundred verses, but he continued; I then thought that he would perhaps recite the whole (Surah) in a rakah, but he continued so I thought he would perhaps bow on completing (this Surah).
Sufyān Ibn 'Uyaynah said: “Whoever prays 5 times a day has thanked Allāh and whoever supplicates in them for his parents then he has thanked them."

📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 44]
Do not offer the Optional prayers, such as the night prayers (Taraaweeḥ), with the congregation while sleeping during the Obligatory prayers (such as Fajr), or by missing the congregation in the Masjid. Always remember that the first thing one will be asked is about the 5 daily obligatory prayers. Set your priorities straight; obligatory deeds take precedence over optional ones. So, take care of the Obligatory prayers first, then the optional ones.
💠 For one to make sure that his Charity (Zakaah and Sadaqah) reaches the poor and the needy, and that he is not a victim of online scams, he should take the following steps:
1️⃣ Distribute it yourself.
2️⃣ Distribute it to people whom you know are indeed in need,
3️⃣ Or to give it to a trustworthy person whom you KNOW and TRUST will distribute it among the poor on your behalf.
4️⃣ Start with distributing it to your poor relatives, then the poor in your community/society, then the poor in your town/city.
5️⃣ It is a mistake to send your charity to far-off places while you have poor relatives and needy in your own town. (A person’s own uncle or cousin might go hungry while he is busy feeding someone he never met).
6️⃣ Avoid trusting every Bakr and Zaid that you meet online with your money. (We have seen so many cases where people have been swindled of their wealth and inheritance, yet many among us do not take heed).
7️⃣ Avoid people who are known for their treachery and deception.
8️⃣ Avoid showing off. (Not all, but many who transfer online is because they then get the chance to boast and show off).
🌴 The Hadeeth:
👉Ibn Abbaas رضي الله عنهما reported: The Prophet ﷺ appointed Muaadh رضي الله عنه as governor of Yemen, and at the time of his departure, he ﷺ instructed him thus: ❝The very first thing to which you should call the people is to testify “Laa ilaaha illallaah” (there is no one worthy of worship except Allaah) and that I (Muhammad) am the Messenger of Allaah, and if they accept this (declaration of Faith), then tell them that Allaah has enjoined upon them five Salaah (prayers) during the day and night; and if they obey you, tell them that Allaah has made the payment of Zakaah obligatory upon them. It should be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor.❞
📚[Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim]
🎓Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله said: Uthaymeen (2/500-501)]
❝Then he ﷺ said: ❝If they follow that, then teach them that Allaah has obligated them to give Charity which will be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor❞, that is the Zakaah. Zakaah is an obligatory charity due on wealth collected from the rich and given to the poor. The rich here is the individual who has the minimum Zakaah standard (Nisaab), not the person with huge wealth. It rather refers to whosoever has the minimum standard even if he has not more than just the standard minimum amount. His ﷺ saying: ❝and distributed among their poor❞ i.e., distributed among the poor of the town; the poor of a town have more right to be given the charity collected from the inhabitants of the same town.
Hence, those who send their Zakaah to distant countries are mistaken whereas there are those in need in their towns. Such practice is prohibited because the Prophet ﷺ said: ❝to be collected from their rich and distributed among their poor.❞ In addition, the kith and kin have greater rights of nice treatment. Close relatives are certainly aware of your wealth; they know you are rich, so if they do not benefit from your wealth, they begin to nurse enmity and hatred towards you which you would have caused. At times when they notice you sending the charity to faraway places while they are in need, they may attack you and damage your properties. Therefore, even wisdom dictates that so long as you have the needy among the people in your town, you should not send your obligatory charity to others.❞

The Aḥaadeeth about Duaa al-Istikhaarah, with slight variations in wording, have been narrated by numerous Companions. Some narrations emphasize that the Prophet ﷺ himself would perform al-Istikhaarah to seek Allaah’s guidance whenever he intended to do something, as mentioned in the narrations of Abu Bakr and Ibn Masood رضي الله عنهما. Other narrations highlight that he ﷺ emphasized teaching his Companions how to perform al-Istikhaarah, as if teaching a Surah from the Qur’aan, as reported by Jaabir, Ibn Masood, Ibn Abbaas, and Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهم. Additionally, some narrations also mention that the Companions would perform al-Istikhaarah whenever there was a need, as mentioned in the narrations of Anas, Zainab, Umar Ibn al-Khaṭṭaab, Abdullaah Ibn Zubair رضي الله عنهم.Abdullaah رضي الله عنهما
All of this shows that performing Ṣalaah al-Istikhaarah is a well-established Sunnah and was widely practiced by the Companions and those who followed them.
Thirteen or more Companions have narrated about al-Istikhaarah and its importance:

The 4 categories of people during the congregational prayers
بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد
During the congregational prayers, in regards to following the Imaam, people are divided into four groups:
The “Forerunners”: Those who precede the Imaam in their bowing and prostration and getting up from them. It is like some race or competition as to who will do it first, the Imaam or those who are praying behind him. They do their action even before the Imaam says the Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar).
The “Coinciders”: Those who do the actions simultaneously with the Imaam. They don't want to precede the Imaam but they also don’t want to be left behind. They will bow and prostrate with the Imaam. They do their actions while the Imaam is still saying the Takbeer. (Many people come under this category).
The “Followers”: Those who follow the Imaam in his actions. They do not precede him, nor do it simultaneously with him. They wait for the Imaam to complete the Takbeer before doing the required action.
The “Delayers”: They do not precede the Imaam, nor do they coincide with him, but they also don't follow him in the true sense. They do not follow the Imaam even after he has said the Takbeer. They will keep doing the Adhkaar and wait for a little longer before joining the Imaam.
۩•۞•۩
Narrated Anas bin Maalik رضي الله عنه: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم fell from a horse and got injured so he led the prayer sitting and we also prayed sitting. When he completed the prayer he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The Imaam is appointed so that he should be followed; if he says the Takbeer then say Takbeer, bow if he bows; raise your heads when he raises his head, when he says: ‘Samia-llaahu liman hamidah’, say: ‘Rabbanaa lakal-hamd’, and prostrate when he prostrates.”
📚 [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim. This has also been reported from Aaishah, Abu Hurairah and others رضي الله عنهم. In other narration it is also mentioned: “And when he prays, standing, you should pray standing. And when he prays sitting, all of you should pray sitting. and straighten the rows for the prayer, as the straightening of the rows is amongst those things which make your prayer a correct and perfect one.”]
💠 Be Grateful To Allaah And to Your Parents
Allaah تعالى says:
﴿أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُ﴾
{Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final destination}
📚 [Surah Luqmaan (31): 14]
Allaah has made it obligatory for us to thank Him and thank our parents. Since there is consensus that thanking one’s parents is done through constant obedience to them, and that simply praising them is not enough, words alone are insufficient. It is well known that true gratitude to Allaah requires more than just words; it must be demonstrated through actions. This is achieved by obeying Allaah and using His blessings in ways that please Him, rather than wasting them on wrongdoing.
Narrated Aaishah رضي الله عنها: The Prophet ﷺ used to offer prayer at night (for such a long time) that his feet would become swollen. I said: “O Allaah's Messenger ﷺ! Why do you do it since Allaah has forgiven you your faults of the past and those to follow?” He ﷺ said: ❝Shouldn't I love to be a thankful slave (of Allaah)?❞dee
📚 [Ṣaḥeeḥ al-Bukhaaree (4837) and the wording is his, and Ṣaḥeeḥ Muslim (2820). This is also reported in the Ṣaḥeeḥain on the authority of al-Mugheerah رضي الله عنه]
👉 Tafseer al-Muḥarrar:
Meaning: We (Allaah) have enjoined upon man to be grateful to Allaah for His blessings upon you; that is, by worshiping and obeying Him alone, and by fulfilling His rights. And be grateful to your parents for enduring the hardship they faced and the effort they exerted for your sake; so obey them and be kind to them.
📚 [التقسير المحرر (24/316)]
👉 Tafseer al-Sa
{Be grateful to Me} by worshiping Me, fulfilling My rights, and not using My blessings to disobey Me.
{and to your parents} by showing kindness to them, speaking gently to them, behaving nicely with them, being humble towards them, honoring them, respecting them, taking care of them, and avoiding mistreating them in any way, in word or deed.

💠 Ramadhaan Is Not An Excuse To Arrive Late At Work Or Leave Early
Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله:
❝I advise you to be punctual at work. No one should come late or leave early before their scheduled time. This time is not for personal convenience. The working hours are not for the person, because he charges for them. Every second of those hours is compensated financially. Therefore, it is not acceptable for the person to arrive late or leave earlier than the designated time. This is a matter of trust.❞

💠Al-Qur'aan: The Dhikr (Reminder)
Allaah تعالى mentioned about Aadam عليه السلام:
وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَا إِلَىٰ آدَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِيَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُ عَزْمًا
{And We had already taken a promise from Aadam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination}
📚[Surah Ṭaahaa (20): 115]
Forgetfulness (Nisyaan) is part of our very creation. We forget facts, promises, blessings, and even our purpose - unless reminded by revelation. This is why the Qur’aan is called Dhikr (reminder) - a mercy to bring us back to what truly matters.

𝟮) 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗶𝘆𝘆𝗮𝗵 (𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻) 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿:
One of the most difficult parts of any act of worship (`Ibaadah) is to have the correct intention. The whole purpose of Niyyah is to determine two things:
a) For whom is it being done? Is it being done for Allaah’s sake alone, or is it for gaining some worldly benefit and fame?
b) What is being done? Example: distinguishing between obligatory prayers and optional prayers.
When The Intention Is Incorrect, The Whole Purpose Is Lost.
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: A man said: Messenger of Allaah! A man wishes to take part in Jihaad in Allaah’s path, desiring some worldly advantage? The Prophet ﷺ said: ❝𝗛𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱.❞ The people thought it was terrible, and they said to the man: Go back to the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ, for you might not have made him understand well. He, therefore, (went and again) asked: Messenger of Allaah, a man wishes to take part in Jihaad in Allaah’s path, desiring some worldly advantage? He ﷺ replied: ❝𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗺.❞ They again said to the man: Return to the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ. He therefore said to him for the third time. He ﷺ replied: ❝𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗺.❞
📚 [Sunan Abu Dawood (2516) and graded as “Ḥasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. Shaikh Ahmad Shaakir graded it “Saḥeeḥ” in Musnad Ahmad (15/16)]
And there are many more Aḥaadeeth.
👉 One of the benefits of Fasting is losing weight, but that is not the whole purpose. Our intent through Fasting should always be the worship of Allaah and obedience to Him. We should differentiate between the intermittent Fasting of the Kuffaar, who do it to lose weight, and the Fasting of the Believers, who do it to gain Allaah’s pleasure.
*D. The Significance Of Worship After Affirming Absolute Power To Allaah:*
Affirming Allaah’s power is not sufficient unless it leads to exclusive worship of Him. The Qur’aan condemns those who affirm Allaah’s Lordship but associate partners in worship (e.g., idols as intercessors, etc.).
The Mushriks (polytheists) did not deny the existence of a Creator. They acknowledged that Allaah is their Lord, the One who created the sun and the moon, and the heavens and the earth belong to Him. They also acknowledged that He sends rain from the sky and gives life to the dead land. It was only when they were asked to single out Allaah in worship that they refused.
So, affirming Allaah’s Lordship alone is not enough for safety from polytheism and salvation from the Hellfire. True safety requires sincerely worshiping Allaah alone, without associating partners with Him, سبحانه وتعالى عما يشركون.

💠 The Disapproval Of Imposing Conditions In Worship:
One should worship Allaah upon the Sunnah of His Messenger without stipulating conditions. Worship is servitude, not partnership, and imposing conditions implies bargaining with Allaah, which contradicts the essence of ʿUboodiyyah (servitude), and it reflects a lack of sincerity. True worship is unconditional - done for Allaah’s pleasure, not depending on worldly outcomes.
Some individuals make their worship conditional, saying: “O Allaah! If You answer my prayers, I will do such-and-such”, or “I will pray Qiyaam al-Layl if I get what I asked for.” This turns worship into a transaction. It is discouraged to impose conditions on Allaah, as this is considered bad manners. The creation has no authority to set conditions on Allaah or to test Him; instead, it is Allaah who tests His creation. One should maintain unwavering devotion in his worship and persistently supplicate to Allaah without attaching conditions, as the Prophet ﷺ stated:
مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَسْتَجِيبَ اللَّهُ لَهُ عِنْدَ الشَّدَائِدِ وَالكَرْبِ فَلْيُكْثِرِ الدُّعَاءَ فِي الرَّخَاءِ

THE RISE AND FALL
We have all been watching the news that, over the past few weeks, gold and silver prices have been soaring, then suddenly plummeting. A combination of external factors, such as economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and market reactions to political events, has driven the recent fluctuations in their prices.
Similarly, our Imaan (Faith) increases and decreases. The worship of Allaah, obedience to Him, good deeds, Taqwa, Tawakkul, etc., are among the factors that help increase Imaan.
Sins, disobedience, immorality, oppression, and corruption are among the factors that negatively affect Faith and diminish it.
Among these Factors that boost Imaan is the month of Ramadhaan by Allaah’s Will. People are at their highest levels of goodness during this month. Fasting during the day, praying in congregation, standing for night prayers, reciting the Qur’aan, making lots of supplications, giving charity, distributing food, etc.
But the moment the new moon is sighted for the month of Shawwal, and Eid is declared, the first thing many people sacrifice is the night prayers. They spend the whole month praying at night, yet their first victim is the very act of praying at night. A lot of people go back to the state they were before Ramadhaan. People become stingy, and the Masaajid become half-empty. Thirty days of nurturing are gone in an instant.
When good deeds decline, Faith also decreases. When Faith decreases, morale drops as well. As morale drops, anxiety and sadness set in. We search for solutions everywhere, but they are right in front of us.
Our Faith is more precious than gold and silver. Our Faith is more precious than the world and what is in it. We know the factors that help increase Faith, so we should be keen on doing them. And we know the factors that diminish the Faith, so we should shun them.
Everyone experiences slackness in life, but we must fight against it. Things that go up will come down, and the most important thing to remember is that those who fall can bounce back. It is Allaah’s grace and favor that we have Ramadhaan every year. May Allaah make us benefit from it, benefit in it, and benefit after it.

The description by Jaabir رضي الله عنه, that the Prophet ﷺ taught them al-Istikhaarah, “as he would teach us a Surah from the Qur’aan” is profound. It signifies:
a. Precision: The wording of the Du`aa is specific, and just like the Qur’aan, one should try to memorize it accurately. 1️⃣
b. Permanence: It is a tool intended to remain with a Believer throughout their life. Similar to how the Qur’aan was revealed for mankind’s benefit, 2️⃣ Du`aa al-Istikhaarah is also meant for their well-being.
c. Importance: It shouldn’t be treated as a “minor” Sunnah, but rather as a vital component of a Muslim’s spiritual core.
NOTE:
1️⃣ Those who are weak in Arabic or haven’t memorized it are excused. However, others should strive to memorize this and other Duaas as accurately as possible. This is important because when the Prophet ﷺ taught a Duaa to al-Baraa’ and asked him to repeat it, al-Baraa’ repeated it, but instead of saying: “wa bi Nabiyyika”, he said: “wa bi Rasoolika”. The Prophet ﷺ corrected him to say it the way he ﷺ taught him, which was: “wa bi Nabiyyika.” [See Ṣaḥeeḥ al-Bukhaaree (247, 6311, 6313, 6315, 7488) and Ṣaḥeeḥ Muslim (56-2710)]
2️⃣ As Allaah تعالى says:
﴿وَلَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِي هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ لِلنَّاسِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلٍ﴾
And indeed We have put forth every kind of example in this Qur’aan, for (the benefit of) mankind. [Surah al-Kahf (18): 54]
Makḥool narrated that Ibn `Umar رضي الله عنه said: “A man performs al-Istikhaarah, seeking guidance from Allaah تبارك وتعالى. So, Allaah تعالى chooses for him, but the person becomes angry with his Lord عز وجل. However, he soon looks at the outcome and finds it to be better for him.”
