"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."
— Faramir; LOTR - The Two Towers (JRRTolkien)

Sometimes while in a sleep-deprived haze, I fantasize about being a grandparent... baking, crafting, and reading with the kids during the day, and then handing them off for a good night's sleep. Apparently, I'm going to have a lot of grandkids.
Daughter #3: I'm going to have 10 kids. How many are you going to have?
Daughter #4: I'm going to have 6 kids and 2 babies.

We read a lot of stories. Occasionally there are siblings that are so mean to each other and have overt antipathy – not occasional healthy disputes and normal bickering, but they seem to actually hate each other. This definitely pops up more in contemporary books, and when it happens my kids tend to get upset. I think I've figured out why. We are a tight-knit family; my kids' best friends are their siblings. Because this has been their experience, siblings who don't have shared affection and loyalty feel both foreign and wrong to them. The foreignness pulls them out of the story. And being empathetic people, they feel hurt at the thought of that kind of treatment from their own siblings. These stories are an insidious attempt to normalize dysfunction. My children's relationships with each other is one of the most beautiful aspects of my life, and I am so grateful that we have structured our lives so that this is their reality.

What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately."

"The masses have never thirsted after truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduce them. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.
Psalm 36:9
“Man evolved in cooperating groups united by common cultural and genetic ties, and it is only in such a setting that the individual can feel truly free, and truly protected. Men cannot live happily alone and without values or any sense of identity: such a situation leads to nihilism, drug abuse, criminality and worse. With the spread of purely egotistic goals at the expense of the altruistic regard for family and nation, the individual begins to talk of his rights rather than his duties, for he no longer feels any sense of destiny, of belonging to and being a part of a greater and more enduring entity. He no longer rejoices in the secure belief that he shares in a heritage which it is part of his common duty to protect—he no longer feels that he has anything in common with those around him. In short, he feels lonely and oppressed. Since all values have become strictly personal, everything is now equal to everything; e.g. nothing equals nothing.”
