It's only a part of truth. Definitelly there were some competition between buisnesses, but airships actually have some critical disadvantages comparing to planes: they are much larger, slower, more vulnerable to weather conditions and require huge mooring masts to land.
But airships have advantages, too: they can be very fuel efficient and can carry huge loads.
So I think that planes and airships actually have different areas of application.
