Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers found a 10-year-old boy from El Salvador who had been abandoned by smugglers at the U.S. border.

As reported by DPS spokesperson Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, the boy had been traveling with a guide on his way to the United States to reunite with his parents, who had entered the country long ago.

The smuggler escorted the boy across the border in Maverick County but left him behind, causing the child to become lost. The boy was found with only a phone in his possession.

He has since been transferred into the care of the U.S. Border Patrol.

While many of us are celebrating Thanksgiving with our loved ones, we should remember that countless children won’t have the chance to enjoy the holidays or see their families,

— Olivarez added.
