China's humanoid robots worry U.S. experts — NYP
China continues to develop the most realistic humanoid robots possible. However, some American experts are alarmed by the trend and are already calling for a ban on the sale of humanoids in the US.
One of them, lobbyist Jacob Helberg, who convinced Congress to sell or ban TikTok, was the first to sound the alarm about the Chinese development. He said China could use the robots, which are supposedly designed for harmless household chores, for more dangerous purposes.
With the help of humanoids, the Chinese could spy, sabotage critical infrastructure, or even kill Americans. Helberg said lawmakers have about a year until ChatGPT-based Chinese robots flood the market.
Helberg was supported by several lawmakers - including Republicans John Moolenaar and Sen. Kathy Britt.
For his part, Paul Rosenzweig, a former government official, thinks the problem is far-fetched. China has indeed stepped forward in the development of artificial intelligence, but the catastrophic consequences described by Helberg are still a long way off.
