Pavel Durov commented on his arrest for the first time
In his channel, Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that after arriving in Paris last month, local police questioned him for 4 days. He was informed that he could be held liable for the use of his messenger by others for illegal purposes.
Durov explained that this state of affairs is incomprehensible for him, because, firstly, Telegram has an official representative in the EU who is ready to respond to any request from the authorities, and secondly, the French government, according to Durov, had many ways to contact him. To back up his words, he said that recently, at the request of French authorities, he personally helped set up a hotline with Telegram to combat the threat of terrorism in France.
In addition, Durov believes that if the country was unhappy with the Internet service, it should have filed a lawsuit against the service itself, not its CEO. Because of such laws, he added, no innovator would create new tools knowing that they could be penalized for potential abuse of those tools by third parties.
Durov said he was ready to block Telegram in France if he could not reach an agreement with local regulators, as he did in Russia when authorities demanded the handover of "encryption keys" and Iran when Tehran demanded the blocking of peaceful protesters' channels.
"I hope the events of August will make Telegram - and the social media industry as a whole - safer and stronger. Thank you again for your love and memes," Durov concluded
