The award was presented to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which unites all survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These people, called hibakusha, have dedicated their lives to fighting for a nuclear-free world.
The organization received the peace prize for its "efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons and for its eyewitness calls that nuclear weapons should never be used again."
"Our victory is a tremendous strength in calling to the world that the abolition of nuclear weapons and perpetual peace can be achieved. Nuclear weapons must be absolutely abolished," said Nihon Hidankyo co-chairman Toshiyuki Mimaki.
In March this year, more than 106,000 atomic bomb survivors were registered in Japan. Their average age was 85.6 years.
