Thousands of people protested against mass tourism on the Spanish Balearic Islands on Saturday, just ahead of the summer season
Marching through Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the largest Balearic island, demonstrators held placards with messages such as "SOS residents, stop mass tourism." According to a spokesman for the Spanish National Police, around 10 thousand people participated in the protests. A smaller protest involving several hundred individuals also took place in Menorca.
Carme Reins, representing the group that organized the protest in Palma de Mallorca, expressed their demands, stating, "We want the authorities to ban individuals who have not lived here for more than five years from purchasing property and to implement stricter regulations on vacation accommodations."
Javier Carbonell, a real estate agent, highlighted the issue of vacation rentals, noting that over half of rental properties were being used for short-term vacation rentals, making them unavailable to locals. "We want less mass tourism and more sustainable tourism," Carbonell emphasized.

Italian teenager Carlo Acutis becomes the first millennial Catholic saint after the second miracle attributed to him
An Italian teenager, informally known as "God's Influencer" for using his computer skills to spread the Catholic faith, is set to become the first saint of the millennial generation, the Vatican announced Thursday.
Carlo Acutis died of leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15. Born in London, he grew up in Milan, where he managed his parish's website and later an academy at the Vatican. He also used his computer skills to create an online database of Eucharistic miracles around the world.
The teenager was beatified - the first step toward sainthood - in 2020 after one miracle was attributed to him. In this miracle, Acutis is credited with healing a Brazilian child from a congenital pancreatic disease.
The second miracle involved the healing of a university student in Florence who had a brain hemorrhage after a head injury, a CBS News partner told BBC News.
The attribution of the second miracle means that Acutis may be elevated to sainthood, but the Vatican has not disclosed when this will happen.
