🇮🇱🇸🇾In the first half of September last year, some media outlets reported on a multi-kilometer raid by Israeli special forces deep into Syrian territory on a missile production facility located in Masyaf, which we initially treated with skepticism.
Today, the IDF Spokesperson's Office published footage of the operation, carried out by the Israeli Air Force's Shaldag special forces unit with the support of Unit 669.
The facility in question is the Institute 4000 research center , which produced components for surface-to-surface missiles and UAVs in coordination with Iranian specialists. The facility was built inside a mountain at a depth of 70-130 meters.
Work on its construction began in late 2017. By 2021, Iran had completed excavation and construction work and began supplying equipment for missile production. In the following years, equipment supplies continued, and tests were conducted on the production line.
The general idea for the raid and destruction of the facility was reportedly conceived many years ago , but was only seriously considered with the start of full-scale IDF operations. Two months before the raid, Shaldag and Unit 669 were already preparing for the operation, practicing various scenarios.
On the evening of September 8, 100 Shaldag and 20 Unit 669 personnel boarded four CH-53 Yasur heavy transport helicopters and flew to Syria. They were joined by two more attack helicopters, 21 fighters, five UAVs, and an additional 30 aircraft were on standby in case the raid failed.
At the time of the operation, the Masyaf area was second only to Damascus in terms of concentration of air defense systems; before the operation, the Israeli Air Force had been periodically striking air defense positions and radar equipment in the area. The complexity of the raid was compounded by the presence of its own air defense systems in the Russian group of troops covering the Khmeimim airbase.
It took the helicopters 18 minutes to reach the facility. At the same time, the Israeli Air Force and Navy launched a series of strikes on the facility itself and on other targets in Syria, disguising the operation as another round of airstrikes that have been carried out regularly in recent years.
After landing and killing the guards outside, the special forces entered the facility, began collecting intelligence and the main objective of the raid - mining the production line of the enterprise . After the evacuation of the special forces groups, the planted charges were detonated.
The IDF estimated that about 30 guards , including Syrian military personnel, were killed in the operation. Syrian media at the time reported 14 dead and 43 wounded.
