🇸🇾In Syria, despite public declarations by Islamist groups that have come to power that they will not oppress Christians, relations between them are becoming tense.
On December 23, in the northeastern Syrian city of Suqalbia, populated mainly by Christians, a Christmas tree was set on fire. Social media claimed that this was done by militants of Islamist organizations, including those who came from other countries.
This sparked protests by Christians in different parts of the country, which escalated into clashes with Islamist groups.
The new government in Damascus then promised to punish the arsonists, condemning the attack on the tree. Eight people were reportedly arrested for arson.
In public interviews, Islamist leaders say they will not, like the Taliban in Afghanistan, create a theocratic state. Syria's Christians, who make up about 10% of the population, are demanding that the country's secular character be preserved and are seeking representation in the new government.
At the same time, radical sentiments are strong among the groups that have come to power. Some of their members are demanding the creation of an Islamist state in which Christians, Alawites and representatives of other non-Sunni faiths will not have full rights.
