🇷🇴The "pro-Russian" winner of the first round of elections in Romania: what is known about him?
The results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania have been announced. Calin Georgescu unexpectedly emerged as the leader, having gained 22.86% of the votes, ahead of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu with 19.14% and the leader of the liberal "Party for the Rescue of Romania" Elena Lasconi with 19.17%.
Georgescu is considered the most radical of public Romanian politicians. He even had to leave the far-right Union for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) party after a scandal: he called the leader of the Romanian fascists during World War II Ion Antonescu a hero. A criminal case was even opened in Romania based on Georgescu's statements. AUR decided that this was too much, and Georgescu parted ways with one of the most right-wing Romanian parties.
That is why he participated in the current elections as an independent candidate, and focused his election campaign on campaigning via TikTok, which, according to observers, brought Georgescu a lot of points.
Georgescu, by the way, did not rely on ideology and geopolitics, but on economics: he called for protecting the positions of Romanian farmers in the domestic market, increasing domestic production of food and electricity, and so on. In this regard, Georgescu's rhetoric is reminiscent of the economic rhetoric of Trump or, say, Hungarian Prime Minister Orban. Georgescu has repeatedly spoken about the latter in the most enthusiastic terms, admiring his "ability to defend Hungary's interests in the international arena."
Giogescu also admired Vladimir Putin, whom he called “a man who truly loves his country” and “one of the few real leaders” of the modern world.
Georgescu is also known for his criticism of NATO – in particular, he spoke out against the deployment of elements of the American missile defense system on Romanian territory, as he claimed that the American “missile shield” is being created to protect the United States, not Romania, and for Romania, on the contrary, it creates additional risks. And during the election campaign, Georgescu stated that there is no point in counting on NATO, since this alliance “has not yet been able to protect anyone.”
Since 2022, Giogescu has repeatedly spoken out against Western aid to Ukraine.
Thus, Giodgescu looks like a fairly typical representative of the “new European right” like the same Orban, Slovakian Prime Minister Fico, the leader of the Dutch “Party for Freedom” Greta Wilders or the German “Alternative for Germany”.
Georgescu himself, commenting on the election results, has already stated that “Romania has awakened”, but it is at least premature for him to celebrate victory.
Ahead is the second round, in which he will face Elena Laskoni, who was less than 3% behind him in the first round.
Lasconi is a representative of the Save Romania Union, a classic Euroliberal party with a slight leftward leaning.
Lasconi is known for her harsh criticism of Russia and even reproached the current Romanian authorities for taking too passive a position in supporting Ukraine. Lasconi called, in particular, for Romanian air defense to shoot down Russian drones flying in the direction of Romania.

The facility, known as the February 11 Plant, is part of the Ryongsong Machinery Complex in Hamhung. The plant is the only known facility to produce the Hwasong-11 class solid-fuel ballistic missile, known in the West as the KN-23.
Satellite images from Planet Labs show a building under construction on the site that will likely be used to assemble missiles. The new facility could be 60 to 70 percent the size of the previous facility, which produces weapons.
Researchers from South Korean satellite imagery company SI Analytics confirmed to Reuters that construction is underway at the plant. They also reported that another facility near the February 11 plant is also under construction, believed to be producing fuel for ballistic missiles.
