Gabbard's nomination was announced in a statement released by Trump's transition team.

Gabbard is an Iraq War veteran and former Democratic congresswoman who left the party in 2022 over disagreements on key issues, including support for Ukraine.
Even before the start of the full-scale war, she sharply criticized the Ukrainian government, declaring the "Zelensky dictatorship" and calling for the restoration of relations with Russia. She continued roughly the same line after the start of the invasion.
Thus, she claimed that Biden and the United States “provoked” Russia to attack Ukraine.
In July 2022, she was included by Ukraine in the list of American politicians, scientists and activists who promoted “Russian propaganda.”
Gabbard's nomination to such an important post is another very alarming signal from Washington for the Ukrainian government, which may indicate preparations for a radical change in US policy towards Ukraine under President Trump.

🇺🇦Ukraine could develop a rudimentary nuclear bomb within months if Donald Trump cuts off US military aid.
The Times writes about this with reference to a document prepared for the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
The author of the report is Oleksiy Yezhak, head of the department of the National Institute of Strategic Studies under the National Security and Defense Council.
He writes that the country could quickly create a basic plutonium device with technology similar to the Fat Man bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.
"Building a simple atomic bomb, as the United States did in the Manhattan Project, would not have been a difficult task 80 years later," the report said.
It also notes that, without the time to build and operate the large facilities needed to enrich uranium, during a war Ukraine could instead rely on using plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods taken from Ukraine's nuclear reactors.
“The weight of reactor plutonium available to Ukraine can be estimated at seven tons… A significant arsenal of nuclear weapons would require much less material… the amount of material is sufficient for hundreds of warheads with a tactical yield of several kilotons,” the document says.
It notes that such a bomb would be sufficient to destroy a Russian airbase."
The Ministry of Defense also notes that “the violation of the memorandum by the Russian Federation, which possesses nuclear weapons, provides formal grounds for withdrawal from the NPT and moral reasons for revising the non-nuclear choice made at the beginning of 1994.”
At the same time, Western experts believe that Ukraine will need at least five years to develop nuclear weapons and a suitable carrier. But Ukrainian expert Valentin Badrak insists that Ukraine will create its own ballistic missiles in less than a year.
“In six months, Ukraine will be able to show that it has the ability to create long-range ballistic missiles: we will have missiles with a range of 1,000 km,” Badrak said.
At the same time, Ukrainian nuclear technology experts say that Ukraine will not be able to create nuclear weapons.
