Chris Geale, 35, fought in Afghanistan against the Taliban as part of an elite British Army unit. He volunteered to train Ukrainian soldiers.
He died last Wednesday during live ammunition training in the Welsh mountains. Media reports suggest it may have been friendly fire. It is unclear whether this was training Ukrainian soldiers.
According to another version, which is popular in Russian public groups, he died at the front in Ukraine, but his death was attributed to the exercises.
