This ice cave is the largest in the world: its length is 42 kilometers, its depth is 407 meters, and the volume of ice growths on its walls and arches exceeds 30 thousand cubic meters.
Numerous passages and labyrinths in the Hohkogel Mountain were formed under the influence of the Salzach River, which eroded limestone rocks for several millennia. And the ice walls of the cave are the result of melting snow in the Alps: the melted snow masses descended from the mountains and accumulated in the cave, gradually turning into ice.
