Unexpected Twist: Archaeologists at a Nuclear Reactor

Interussia archaeology participants visited the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics in Dubna. The laboratory is one of the scientific divisions of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), an international research center bringing together scientists from around the world to conduct studies in nuclear physics and related fields.

During the visit, the fellows were given a lecture on the operation of a nuclear reactor and learned how neutron-based research methods are used to study archaeological artifacts. These techniques allow scientists to analyze the composition and structure of objects without damaging them, providing valuable insights into their origin, age and history.

The group also visited the office of the laboratory’s first director, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ilya Frank, whose pioneering work laid the foundation for many of the institute’s scientific achievements.

The highlight of the visit was a guided tour of the reactor itself, where participants had the opportunity to see the facility close and learn more about the technologies that support both fundamental science and interdisciplinary research.

The trip offered a unique perspective on how advanced nuclear physics tools can contribute to the study and preservation of cultural heritage ☢️

News from St. Petersburg — what happened last week? 🔴

By tradition, the second half of the fellowship takes our Arab journalism fellows to Russia’s cultural capital, where they join the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) — an annual Russian business event and a platform for discussing economic development, international cooperation and emerging technologies.

This year, SPIEF brought together more than 20,000 participants from over 130 countries, with hundreds of sessions dedicated to the future of the global economy, innovation and sustainable growth.

What have our journalists been up to?

Producing reports and interviews for their home media outlets
Attending sessions featuring government officials, business leaders, and experts from around the world
Networking with fellow journalists and media professionals covering the forum

And in between the packed forum schedule, the fellows made time for a visit to the State Hermitage Museum. There, they were welcomed by Mikhail Piotrovsky — renowned Arabist and Director General of the museum — who spoke about cultural diplomacy, the Hermitage’s international mission and the importance of dialogue between Russia and the Arab world.

A week filled with learning, inspiration and unforgettable experience!

🎥 Live from Moscow: Pushkin Speaks in Many Languages

Every year on June 6, a special day arrives for our fellows in Russian studies. Russia celebrates the birthday of Alexander Pushkin — a poet whose works have shaped not only Russian literature, but the Russian language itself.

By tradition, on this day our fellows together with their mentors from the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute gather at the monument to Pushkin in the heart of Moscow to pay tribute to his legacy through poetry, music, and literary readings.

⭕️A fellow from Senegal reflected on Pushkin’s African ancestry and the importance of this legacy for readers across the continent.

⭕️ A participant from Tajikistan read Tatiana’s famous letter from Eugene Onegin.

⭕️ A fellow from Serbia presented Tatiana’s letter in Serbian translation.

⭕️ And a participant from India performed a romance based on Pushkin’s poetry, accompanying the piece on guitar.

From poetry readings to music, the event became a reminder that Pushkin’s works continue to unite people from different countries through a shared appreciation of language, literature, and culture.

We invite you to enjoy these special moments with us ⭕️

Engineering in practice ⚙️

Innovation, learning and a chance to discover one of Russia's leading scientific hubs — that's what awaited the InterRussia engineering fellows in Novosibirsk. Over the past few days, they explored cutting-edge technologies, met industry experts and experienced the city's unique cultural side.

During their fellowship in Novosibirsk, InterRussia participants visited the ELTEX Company, where they learned how one of Russia's leading telecom equipment manufacturers develops and produces networking solutions.

The group also spent time at the Advanced Engineering School of Novosibirsk State University (NSU), discovering how research, education and industry come together to train the next generation of engineers.

Though, it wasn't all about lectures and technology. The participants also explored some of Novosibirsk's most iconic attractions, including the city's Planetarium and the famous Zoo — a great chance to unwind, get to know the city and spend time together outside the classroom.

A week full of new knowledge, inspiring conversations and unforgettable experiences! 🚀

☕️What comes to mind when you think of Russia? The Kremlin? Snow? Ballet? 👀

For our fellows, the answer is often much more unexpected. Because InteRussia is not only about universities, research, and professional development — it's also about discovering the cultural symbols that Russians themselves grow up with.

One of them is Gzhel 💙
🔷A centuries-old tradition of hand-painted porcelain;
🔷Instantly recognizable blue-and-white patterns;
🔷One of Russia's most famous folk crafts, found in homes, museums, and souvenir collections around the world;
🔷An art form where every piece is painted by hand and no two works are exactly alike.

During their visit to the Gzhel Factory, our fellows went behind the scenes to see how a lump of clay becomes a piece of art and how master craftsmen keep this tradition alive in the 21st century.

Because understanding a country is not only about learning its language or studying its history. Sometimes it starts with holding a porcelain cup, hearing the story behind a pattern, and realizing that culture lives in the smallest details.

And yes — if you join InteRussia, we'll introduce you to this side of Russia too.

Inside the Laboratories That Reveal Ancient Secrets 🔷

How do archaeologists determine the age of a wooden artifact? What can ancient pollen reveal about a civilization that disappeared centuries ago?

Our archaeology fellows found the answers during a visit to the Institute of Archaeology, where they explored the laboratories that help researchers uncover the secrets of the past.

Among the highlights:

🔘 learning how dendrochronology uses tree rings to date archaeological finds and reconstruct historical events;
🔘 discovering how spectral analysis reveals the chemical composition of ancient artifacts;
🔘 visiting metallography and petrography laboratories, where scientists study metals, rocks, and minerals recovered during excavations;
🔘 getting acquainted with the archaeomagnetic method, which allows specialists to date archaeological features by tracking changes in the Earth's magnetic field.

For our fellows, this was a chance to see how archaeology today combines history, natural sciences, and cutting-edge technologies to bring the stories of past civilizations back to life.
