I just came back and got a terrible news from my best friend, Lavin.
Her 2 month old baby boy, Lucas has been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
SMA, as we learnt, is a condition that progressively weakens muscles over time, affecting both the brain and spinal cord. This means that Baby Lucas will struggle with independently sitting, crawling, standing, walking, swallowing, and even breathing. His diagnosis is type 1 SMA, which is the most severe form, with a life expectancy of only 2 years.
Currently, the baby relies on medical support for breathing and feeds through a medical tube that is painfully inserted into his tiny nose. Without treatment, his motor neurones will continue to deteriorate, leading to complete immobility and weakness and eventually leave us.
The doctors at KKH has informed that Baby Lucas only hope now is a treatment called Zolgensma. It is a one time gene therapy that will stop the progression of SMA and sustain the remaining muscle function needed for Baby Lucas to live his life to the fullest. The doctor also advised that Baby Lucas should receive this treatment as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, the medicine is the world’s most expensive medicine that costs $2.4million Singapore Dollars and it is beyond what his family can afford.
