👠 Chanel "undressed" the Court
If you ever ask us which is the most powerful fashion brand, we will swiftly respond with one name – Chanel.
Boasting a rich heritage that spans more than a century, this esteemed fashion house has not only excelled in producing remarkable lines of apparel, footwear, and accessories, but has also skillfully amassed an impressive array of intangible assets of intellectual property.
Trademarks hold significant value for the company, and that is why the brand possesses an extensive portfolio of trademarks. One of the company's most recognizable symbols is the well-known logo with two C's intertwined together. The iconic double C logo exhibits different variations (for example, one, two, three, four) and is firmly associated with the famed Chanel brand by consumers.
It is no surprise that the fashion house is steadfast in protecting its intellectual property. In recent years, Chanel has enforced its rights against numerous manufacturers, such as Real Real, Amazon, and others.
Sometimes, however, it uses rather unconventional approaches to preserve its intellectual property rights. For instance, in 2000, the fashion brand opted to directly address their request of a logo change to the core of the French justice system – the French Court of Cassation.
According to the brand, the French court had been actively using a designation confusingly similar to the Chanel logo and this resemblance could potentially result in significant future losses.
Although the French Court of Cassation had been using the confusingly similar image since the 19th century (about a hundred years before Coco was born) and had never engaged in any business activities resembling those of the fashion brand, it graciously acknowledged the matter and willingly chose to modify its emblem. As a result, the current logos bear no resemblance to each other.
It is still unclear though, which losses Chanel was referring to in their request. Perhaps they speculated that the Court of Cassation had intentions to venture into launching its own clothing line… Who knows 🤗
