Yasa' - Elisha pbuh
His name pbuh
Muhammad Ibn Ishâq said: "His name is Al-Yasa' Ibn Akhtab" pbuh.
Abou Al-Qâssim Ibn 'Asâkir says: "His name is Al-Yassa' Ibn 'Adî Ibn Choutalam Ibn Afrâthim Ibn Yûssuf Ibn Ya'coub Ibn Ishâq Ibn Ibrâhîm Al-Khalîl peace on them all."
Ibn Kathîr said: "It is also said that he was the paternal cousin of Ilyas pbuh and that he pbub hid with him in the cave of Mount Qassioun to flee from King Ba'albak."
Later he pbuh went there with him and when Ilyas pbuh died, Al-Yassa' pbuh succeeded him and Allah Ta'âla gave him after him the prophecy [...]
We have told the story of Dhûl-Kifl pbuh after that of Ayoub ('ailayhi salam) because it is said that he pbuh was the son of Ayoub.
Wa Allah Ta'ala A'lam. Only God knows.
(Kitâb Sahîhu Qiçaçou al-Anbiyyâ by Ibn Kathîr, p.399)
His story pbuh
Ibn Ishâq reported that Al-Hassan said: After Ilyas came Al-Yassa' ('alayhouma Salam) who remained as long as Allah willed, calling them to Allâh Ta'âla and following the laws [Sharî'a] and the way [minhaj] of Al-Yassa' pbuh. Then he pbuh died and complete disorder reigned among them, they multiplied sins, had among them a greater number of tyrants and killed the Prophets.
Among them there was a stubborn and unjust king [Malik] and it is said that he was the one whom Dhou-l-Kifl pbuh vouched for, if he repented, that he would enter Paradise.
His merits pbuh
Allah said: {Likewise, Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah and Lot. Each of them We have favored above the rest of the world.} (6/86)
Allah said: {And remember Ishmael and Elisha, and Zal-Kifl, each of them among the best.} (38/48)

Imam Shafi'i' and his student
Whilst sitting in Imam Shafi'i's class one day, his student Yunus ibn Abd al A'ala differed with him. He got so angry that he left the class and went home.
That night, Yunus heard a knock on his door and asked who it was. The one knocking answered,
"Muhammad Ibn Idrees!"
Yunus thought of everyone who he knew by that name except the Imam. Upon opening the door, he was shocked to see Imam Shafi'i.
The Imam said:
"O Yunus! Hundreds of issues unite us, and only one issue divided us?
Don't try to be triumphant in all differences; sometimes, winning hearts is more important than winning situations.
Don't demolish bridges you built and crossed, for you may need them again one day for your return.
Always hate what is wrong, but do not hate the one who errs.
Hate the sin with all your heart, but forgive and have mercy on the sinner.
Criticise the speech, but respect the speaker.
Our job is to wipe out the disease, not the patient."
This is truly very sound advice. It is easy to lose it.
It is easy to burn the bridges.
It is easy to hate the person.
It is easy to take vengeance.
But where does that get us? It only makes us bitter and empty.

Ibnul Qayyim رحمه الله said:
"Don’t ruin your happiness with worry, and don’t ruin your mind with pessimism.
Don’t ruin your success with deception and don’t ruin the optimism of others by destroying it.
Don’t ruin your day by looking back at yesterday.
If you think about your situation, you will find that Allaah (سبحانه وتعالى) has given you things without asking, so have trust in Allaah (سبحانه وتعالى) that He doesn’t prevent anything you want except there is goodness for you.
You could be sleeping and the doors of the heavens are being opened with dua’as being made on your behalf.
SubhanAllaah: perhaps from someone poor whom you helped, or someone sad whom you brought joy, or someone passing by and you smiled at him, or someone in distress and you removed it..
So don’t ever underestimate any good deeds."

"Even a smile is charity."
As we move through history and the chaos of our time, and amid the chaos in places like Gaza, when all they can hear is the thunder of gunshots, and all we can hear is the thunder of materialism and greed and all they could smell is the violence in the air, and all we can smell is our own lack of content.
I think back and am amazed at how I could allow myself to loose hope whatever the circumstance in my own life be here in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
We all have something we are hurting from and we reach out to each other as Muslims hoping someone will lend a helping hand. Maybe it is time to rethink whether we really care or not, or are we just living day to day?
And it is then that my thoughts become so clear and true, that three words run through my mind endlessly, repeating themselves like a broken record:
"Smiling is a charity, Smiling is a charity, smiling is a charity. "
His saying (prophet Muhammad pbuh) softens my heart somehow and seeing things differently allows the anguish and the pain to fade like the stars at dawn.
The final messenger of God named Muhammad (peace be upon him), when first learning of him it was through a smile that I became a practicing Muslim.
And now when thinking of the Prophet pbuh he reminds me of a Desert Rose, a desert rose dressed tall in Red standing and illuminated by the light of the moon, his message pbuh calls to me like a siren in the night and he pbuh is a freedom to me from the evil of my soul, hope, faith and the strength to carry on and his pbuh selfless message contained the greatest gift to me and to you, a healing and a solace - the greatest gift being the love of God and a clean soul.
A hope that through a smile we can end the injustice and hatred against the innocent.
In every story of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh there is a reminder of how he pbuh would treat people with a soft heart, affection, concern, love, and most of all, a smile. They say that He pbuh once said something magnificent-
"Even a smile is charity."
A long time ago this young man in his early twenties used to hate going to the mosque and would only go when his mother would force him to. When he would go there all he would see were faces of hatred and discontent. One day feeling lost and alone he found himself at the footsteps of that mosque. As he stood outside it, a brother of Syrian origin appeared and he had a great big smile on his face and he was smiling right at the young man.
This brother had noor (Iight) on his face and around him, metaphorically speaking. He really did, and the young man could not gather why he smiled at him and actually greeted him and asked him how he was doing. The young man developed a burning desire after that day to seek out this man and he eventually became his student and learned the basics of Islam from him.
It was a smile that brought that confused young man to the light of God. A simple implementation of the practice of our beloved Prophet Muhammad pbuh being a smile that shined the light of Islam on him.
Who would have ever thought that a smile could go so far and it came from the heart connected to the light of God. "Light upon Light."
It is through learning about the Prophet pbuh and how he pbuh dealt with people that we can learn to love again and treat our loved ones with respect and a kind word. It is not easy to do but it can be attained. The Prophet Muhammad pbuh who had a prayer for everything one could think of conveyed stories of how he pbuh dealt with his people including the non-Muslims, the new converts to Islam, travelers, the poor, the passerby, his friends and his loved ones and so on.
And we learn from his history pbuh that he pbuh took everyone's situation into consideration and dealt with them with a gentle word and not with harshness as we are so accustomed to these days. As the Prophet pbuh said,
"One who is devoid of mercy is not shown any mercy (Sahih Muslim)."

A Heap of Skulls
There is a story about Bayazid, a Sufi mystic. He was passing through a cemetery and he came upon a heap of skulls. Out of curiosity he took one skull. He had always been of the thought that all skulls are almost the same, but they were not the same. There were a few skulls whose ears were joined together; there was a passage. There were a few skulls whose ears were not joined together; there was a barrier between the two. There were a few skulls both of whose ears were joined to the heart but not joined together; there was a passage running to the heart.
He was very surprised. He prayed and asked God, “What is the matter? What are you trying to reveal to me?” And it is said that he heard a voice. God said, “There are three types of people: one, who hear through one ear; it never reaches anywhere — in fact they don’t hear, just the sound vibrates and disappears. There is another type, who hear, but only momentarily — they hear through one ear, and through the other ear it is lost into the world again. There are a few souls, of course, who hear through the ears and it reaches to the heart.”
And God said, “Bayazid, I have brought you to this heap of skulls just to help you remember it when you are talking to people. Talk only to those who take whatsoever you say to their hearts — otherwise don’t waste your energy, and don’t waste your time. Your life is precious: you have a message to deliver.”
One day I also understood — not by going to a cemetery and coming across a heap, but by looking into alive people. There are three types; Bayazid is right. The story may be true or not; that is irrelevant. I looked into thousands of people, and I found that only a very few are there who will take the seed to the heart, who will become soil to it, who will absorb it. And others are just curiosity-mongers, just entertaining themselves. Maybe the entertainment is religious, but it is meaningless.
So here I don’t exist for the masses. Let it be known once and forever: I am not interested in the crowd, I am interested only in individuals. And you have to show your mettle.

Motherhood is a fundamental function in the life of a woman. She looks like a tree that is only worth the fruit it bears.
Maternity, which involves breastfeeding, care, education and teaching, contributes to the construction of a healthy society.
In view of the sanctity of motherhood, Islam has given women a place of choice in society and has sufficiently equipped them to tackle their natural function. Islam did not oblige the woman to work outside her home and, on the other hand, made the man responsible for providing for the needs of the family.
But this does not mean that the man is invested with all the powers over the woman. Care does not mean authority but responsibility to fulfill the duty of paternity.
However, since the man is responsible for material management, his share of the inheritance is more important in order to safeguard the balance of the two poles of the family.
Therefore, no woman has the right to neglect her children anymore.
On the contrary, she must provide them with a good education by guiding them to the right path. The more she takes care of her children, the better her relationship with them.
Thus, when she has completed their education, she will have fully deserved that her children in turn take care of her, as stipulated in the Koran and the hadith.

Bishr bin Harith: A Sinner Turned Saint – Studio by Dawud Walid
Bishr bin Harith was born in Persia and later settled in Baghdad, Iraq. Though raised as a Muslim, Bishr got into the party life, including drinking wine.
One night when he was hosting a raucous party with music and alcohol consumption, Imam Musa al-Kazim bin Ja’far as-Sadiq bin Muhammad al-Baqir bin Ali Zayn al-‘Abidin bin Husayn as-Sibt bin Amir al-Mu’minin Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah’s blessings be upon them) walked in front of Bishr’s home. As he walked by, a female servant came out of the home carrying rubbish from the party. Imam al-Kazim then asked the servant,
“Is the resident of this house a freeman or a slave?”
She replied, “Of course, he is freeman!”
He then said, “You are correct because if he was a slave, he would fear his Master.”
She went back into the house while Bishr was at a table drinking wine when he asked her why she took so long to come back into the home.
She told Bishr about what Imam al-Kazim had said, how Bishr could not be not a slave because he was not obedient to his Master, meaning Allah (Mighty and Sublime).
Bishr was stunned by these words. He ran out of the house to chase down Imam al-Kazim, in such a hurry in his state of intoxication that he did not even bother putting on his shoes. When Bishr caught up with Imam al-Kazim for verification, he repented for his sinful.
He desired to be a slave of Allah (Mighty and Sublime) instead of being free to follow his lusts. From then on, Bishr did not wear shoes again for the rest of his life because he wanted to remember the state that he was in when he resolved himself to submitting to his Master, which is how he became known as al-Hafi meaning the Barefooted

Suppose that what you hoped for in this world, you got it.
And then what? What is momentary can distract you for a moment! But then the last sip of pleasure will choke you. Or else you are the one who'll give up.
Ah! This sip is so bitter that when you swallow it you'll wish you had never seen what you like!
Ah! Woe to him who has a mind closed to reflection!
Woe to him who is prevented from going to drink when he sees the fountain!
Is there not in these tombs a warning?
And in the march of time a lesson?

Corn
Corn is mentioned several times throughout the Quran. It was mentioned in Surah Naba, verse: 15.
“That we may produce therewith corn and vegetations...” {Surah Naba: 15}
It was also referenced in Surahs like Surah Ash-Shura, Surah Ar-Rahman, Surah An-Nahl, Surah Anbiya, and Surah Al-Fath. Allah references corn in so many surahs, so it is definitely good for us.
Corn is very rich in Vitamins and minerals. It contains vitamin C, numerous B vitamins, antioxidants, and potassium. It also contains copper, an antioxidant that can help prevent cancer and heart disease.
Corn is more beneficial without unhealthy additives like butter. So, when you're thinking of adding corn to your next meal try using olive oil instead of butter.
If you want to add a little more spice, you should try adding ginger, fresh basil, and a pinch of salt to the water you boil it in.

What kind of bird are you?
Medieval theologian Ibn al-Qayyim is quoted as saying:
“The heart on its path to Allah the Almighty is like a bird, where love is its head, and fear and hope are its wings.”
Certainly, this illustrates the equilibrium that must be in force for us to balance and soar through the pomp of this life to reach God.
It is interesting to note in this parable that without these three components the bird would lose its bearing or even worse collapse earthward and be destroyed.
Using Ibn al-Qayyim’s simile, it is also interesting to note that even migratory birds at times must rest. Even tired birds at times crossing great swathes of ocean rest mid-flight or take a stopover. To quote bird enthusiast Jennie Miller:
“Fatigued and famished from a night of flying, a migrating bird navigates vast tracts of terrain in search of a site with ample food, suitable shelter, and few competitors or predators.
These stopover sites play a crucial role in a bird’s survival by serving as pit stops where it can rest and refuel for a few hours or days before moving onward. In fact, stopover sites are so critical for bird recovery that during migration birds actually spend more time on the ground than in the air.”

The human body overflows with miraculous evidence that cannot all be listed even in multi-volume encyclopedias. Consciously reflecting for a few minutes on all this is enough to understand the existence of God.
The present order is protected and maintained by His will. The human body is not the only food for thought. Life is present in every square millimeter of the world, whether or not it is observable by humans.
The world is filled with countless living beings. It ranges from single-celled organisms to plants, from insects to marine animals, from birds to human beings. If, for example, you take a handful of soil to observe it, you can discover multiple living creatures with extremely diverse characteristics.
The same is true for the air we breathe. Even on our skin there are many living beings whose names we do not know.
Inside the intestines of all living things are millions of bacteria or single-celled organisms that aid digestion.
The animal population in the world is many times greater than the human population. If we also consider the world of plants, we notice that there is no place on earth where life does not exist.
All of these creatures, which are spread over an area measuring millions of square miles, have different body systems, different lives, and play different roles in the ecological balance. It is totally absurd to say that all these living beings came into being by chance, without any purpose or intention.
No living being has come into being on its own. No accidental event could ever lead to such complex systems.

10 Ways to Bring About the Love of Allah
Ibn al-Qayim (d. 751H)
1: Recitation of the Qur’an with reflection and understanding of its meanings and what is intended by it. [This helps] understand what its author intends from us.
2: Getting closer to Allah with the supererogatory acts of worship, after the obligatory ones, for they will take a person to another level of love.
3: Constant remembrance (of Allah) in every circumstance by the tongue, the heart, and actions, so a person’s share of love is in accordance with his share of remembrance.
4: Preferring His love over our own when desires overcome us and climbing to reach His love, even if the ascent is difficult.
5: The heart’s comprehension of His Names and Attributes, witnessing them and having knowledge of them, to immerse oneself in the garden of this knowledge and its fundamental pillars. Whoever knows Allah by His Names, Attributes and Actions, will, no doubt, love Him. For this reason the deniers of His Attributes (Mu’attilah)… are like highway robbers to the hearts, (they come in between it and) between reaching the beloved (i.e., Allah).
6: Witnessing His generosity, His benevolence, His favours and blessings, both hidden and open, for these things call to His love.
7: This is the most amazing of them all. The heart’s total defeat and humility in front of Allah, the Most High.
8: Being alone at the Time of the Descent of Allah for having private conversations with Him, reciting His Words, investigating the heart, displaying the manners of servitude whilst in front of Him and then to seal all of that with seeking forgiveness and repentance.
9: Sitting with the truthful lovers (of Allah) and gathering the good fruits (arising) from their speech, just as one picks out the best of fruits, and that you do not speak except when the benefit of the speech prevails and when you know that there is a betterment for you and benefit for others in it.
10: Keeping distant from everything that comes between the heart and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
So from these ten ways, the lovers will reach the (various) levels of love.
