ELI5 why it's a bad idea to pay off debts with interest rates lower than 5%, like mortgages
At /r/explainlikeimfive
I've heard about how it's a more solid return on your money compared to other investments like the stock market, CDs, etc., but I just can't wrap my head around the concept. I'm not part of the "all debt bad" crowd (anymore), but this one keeps throwing me off

ELI5: If/when the policy that removes medical debt from impacting credit reports goes through, is there any real reason to pay the debts down?

As title says. Medical debt is the biggest reason my credit is impacted right now and I'm doing my best to keep up out of fear of collections. If this policy goes through, how will they make me fear god until I pay it back?

Netflix doesn't display subs or subs in my language
At /r/netflix
Hi! So I have a question about Netflix.I have recently started (binge) watching Spy x Family on Netflix and just finished the first season. When I went on to watch the second season, which only recently came out on Netflix, there were no dubs or subs available in a language I can understand. I live in Belgium, which has 3 national languages but I only have subtitles in French or German, two languages that I barely speak. I am however bilingual in Dutch and English and neither of those languages have a dub or sub which makes it impossible for me to understand the show.I know I could watch it on crunchyroll but I do not want to spend money on another subscription as I do not watch anime very often. I also have had these problems before with other shows which led me to stop watching them. Will the sub or dub ever come out or is this just an issue Netflix will have forever?

Everything about her is annoying. She does the opposite of common sense. Screams to be targeted, says the most annoying quips that get hushed. About ready to CC MUTE her every time she speaks. Why was she written this way???

More Cells at Work
At /r/netflix
I just looked at Netflix in this year of 2025 on American Netflix and saw Cells at Work. More importantly, it said, "New Season Coming Soon". Unfortunately, when I clicked on the show, it didn't give me a date of timeframe to expect the new season. So, I was wondering if anyone might know. What I saw

Jerry Springer Documentary
At /r/netflix
Okay, I keep seeing comments about what a terrible documentary it was. Could it have touched on more? Of course. But I don’t think that was the point.I think the point of the film was to get at the heart of how this show, that loved the numbers it drew from shocking the public - because they literally wanted people to stop flipping the channel when they passed by and it worked - and how the impact of seeing people violent and pitted against each other had a horrible influence on all of us.We see reality TV shows still push the boundaries in different ways, but they feed off of making us disconnect from our own lives and play comparison - at least my life isn’t that bad!But we are further seeing the psychological impacts on our everyday lives in the political world. We are losing our empathy for each other when we are all each deeply shaped by our life experiences. I get that everyone is different, but we’ve become so divided and I have no doubt that Jerry Springer among other reality shows, among other factors in the media are doing an excellent job at feeding our apathy. We aren’t each other’s enemies. It’s the people at the top who are playing mind games. We aren’t going to see the change we long for until we stop turning on each other. This is what I got out of the film at least. Anyone else?

Constant video issues
At /r/netflix
I recently contacted Netflix as every title I watch freezes up at some point. The sound continues, but the video never resumes and eventually the title closes and won't open again. Due to having no issues with multiple other streaming services on my smart TV, it is definitely Netflix. According to Netflix this is due to the device 'storing too much data from Netflix', and I was instructed go turn my device off and on again, however, although this solves the issue short term, it happens again later with other titles. Surely turning my device off and on again cannot be a long term solution to this? It is very frustrating and in a few occasions I have simply found the title on another platform and watched it there instead.

American Preimeval
At /r/netflix
Honestly, what are people’s thoughts on the first few episodes? For some reason, there are parts of this series that bore me. The action wakes me up. Today, I finished episode 3, and I found myself detached from watching the full episode. I was more focused on scrolling through my phone midway through the film because of boredum. I’m getting ready to rewatch from episode 1 because I want to give this film a chance. It’s way too early for me to dismiss it already. Is it worth watching for others?

ELI5: Why do nearly all government infrastructure projects run so far over budget?
At /r/explainlikeimfive
Seemingly most government infrastructure projects significantly exceed their initial budgets. Is it an issue with the tendering process? How do governments then deal with these sometimes massive additional costs from a budget perspective? Is it just an expected/accepted thing?Asking as a tax payer, as I can't imagine the private sector accepting these over runs.

ELI5: Why don't they cover undersea cables with ground?
At /r/explainlikeimfive
It would prevent some of the issue with supposed anchors cutting them. It would protect from wildlife. It would cost some but dredging and putting sand on places has been done for like a century. Why not bury these cables once placed to prevent accidental and easy access to sabotage?Edit: I see a lot about maintenance in the comments. I worked it telecom and even shooting fiber underground in a conduit was expensive. I can't see them shooting fiber under the sea and saying "yeah we're going to have divers look at this cut 150 feet for a small break. Then have a trained splicer and diver that can go to the bottom of a trench to fix" At that point is it really cheaper? Do you have any sources that say maintenance is done more than 150 feet below the water?Edit 2: How deep do you think they go. 70% of even the biggest anchors are still above water when dragged. Even submerged a few feet someone couldn't drag the anchor the whole time.It would be like trying to brute force a password but have a 3 try limit before you can try again. Edit 3: here is the answer https://old.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/1hztlj4/eli5_why_dont_they_cover_undersea_cables_with/m6smboe/?context=3 by /u/tollygagThey bring the cables up to repair them. Most cables are well over a mile underwater. Here is a submarine cable repair ship doing its job
. They don't send anyone down to fix them - they hook them or catch them based on GPS coords and bring them to the surfaceAccidents and sabotage aren't the only ways cables get broken. The ocean floor is active, and another big cause of cable breakages is earthquakes. Burying cables doesn't solve that and makes it more difficult to repair them. And it really doesn't stop sabotage. Anyone that can send a mini sub down to a sub cable can dig it out again. The ocean bottom is not a monolith of silt. It has mountains, chasms, rifts, boulder fields, all kinds of things. Sub cables may be buried, but they may also drape over difficult features or even span open water in some cases depending on what is feasible. But the short of it is, sub cables are a solved problem. Many smart people have already figured it out based on many decades of experience working with them and the environment and they know what they are doing and why they do things and how they do things.
Netflix downloads, screencasting, smart TV, 2 accounts

Do you remember the name of this series?
At /r/netflix
I need your help in finding an older medieval tv series. I can't remember the name of it and all my searches have come up short. It was on Netflix for awhile, still could be. It had a number/year for the name. It was a medieval/kings/magic type show. Here come some spoilers, so if you have watched it then you know - It is a story about 3 friends. 2 are dating, and the other was adopted by a king. Long story short - as I remember the three of the them come up with a plan. The female in the couple agree to "fake" marry the friend to save the kingdom or something... there is a battle - she thinks her boyfriend is dead, so she and new hubby really start looking at each other as husband and wife - then find out bro isn't dead... there is a big battle at the end of the series - chick finds out she is preggers with bro's baby....What was that series called?Thank you!!
