ELI5: How do levers and gears allow me to lift things that I normally couldn’t?

I was cranking the massive dumpster at work today and it occurred to me that my understanding of levers and fulcrums and gears and pulleys is not complete. The crank has a gear near the handle, and a pulley up to the lid of the dumpster. That lid has to be at least 500 pounds. I am a 200 pound guy. How the heck does a gear and pulley allow me to lift it? My understanding was that a gear allows you to split up heavy things into smaller chunks that allow you to lift it easier but how??! Even a small chunk of lifting 500 pounds is still 500 pounds just slowly and I do not physically possess the weight to lift that. If the pulley did not have the gears, surely I couldn’t lift it, right? Also, how does a fulcrum work? Imagine I have a 5 foot long teeter totter and that is completely weightless, and a fulcrum is placed 1 foot from the left side. Imagine a 20 pound object is placed on the left side. Assuming the teeter totter has no weight, could a 5 pound object lift the 20 pound object if it was placed all the way on the right side? How do you even calculate that? Is there a length that would allow the 5 pound object to move the 20 pound object? Or, is the effectiveness of a lever dependent on how heavy the lever is itself because you’d have 4 feet of teeter totter hanging off to one side? Doesn’t a 5 pound object lifting a 20 pound object break the laws of physics? Also, how does a gear allow me to crank such heavy things like the dumpster lid? Doesn’t each notch on the gear still require the same amount of force as if I lifted the dumpster that amount with no gear? Is this black magic? Some kind of glitch in the code? Please someone help me understand this I’m having a crisis. I thought I understood this in high school.

Squid Game 2 (slight spoilers)

Idk why but a lot of people thought this was going to be a “cash grab” even though the first season set up a season 2.I honestly think that this season out does season 1. It was cool seeing more sides of the Squid Games other than the games themselves.Lee Jung-jae does an incredible job in showing the development his character went through and how it has matured Gi-hun.New additions like Thanos, Kim Jun Hee, Cho Hyun-ju and others were great additions to the show. And seeing the mastermind play the games, at one point, i thought he actually turned good. But later events proved otherwise…I want to specifically point out that those last 2 episodes were also INSANE.My only complaint is how the season ends, in my opinion it was a bad spot to end it. It kinda feels like were in the middle of an episode and BOOM, ending.I cant wait to see how season 3 picks up, especially after how it ended.And this last thing is kind of a tangent. I wonder if David Finchers American remake wont be a remake, but possibly a spin off, showing that the organization is global, and season 3 could possibly set that up.

I'm open to exploring different types of movies or books, whether it's a heartwarming drama, an exciting sci-fi adventure, or a gripping mystery. ELI5: Why can’t human babies go to sleep by themselves?

I’m trying to understand why babies need help going to sleep from their caregivers , whether it is rocking, shushing, etc. When left to themselves, babies get overtired and may end up crying to sleep. We adults can go to sleep without getting worked up (at least most of us) as well as little ones from other species. So why not human babies??

ELI5: Does Quantum mechanics really feature true randomness? Or is it just 'chance' as a consequence of the nature of our mathematical models? If particles can really react as not a function of the past, doesn't that throw the whole principle of cause and effect out?

I know this is an advanced question, but it's really been eating at me. I've read that parts of quantum mechanics feature true randomness, in the sense that it is impossible to predict exactly the outcome of some physics, only their probability.I've always thought of atomic and subatomic physics like billiards balls. Where one ball interacts with another, based on the 'functions of the past'. I.e; the speed, velocity, angle, etc all creates a single outcome, which can hypothetically be calculated exactly, if we just had complete and total information about all the conditions.So do Quantum physics really defy this above principle? Where if we had hypotheically complete and total information about all the 'functions of the past', we still wouldn't be able to calculate the outcome and only calculate chances of potentials?Is this randomness the reality, or is it merely a limitation of our current understanding and mathematical models? To keep with the billiards ball metaphor; is it like where the outcome can be calculated predictably, but due to our lack of information we're only able to say "eh, it'll land on that side of the table probably".And then I have follow up questions:If every particle can indeed be perfectly calculated to a repeatable outcome, doesn't that mean free will is an illusion? Wouldn't everything be mathematically predetermined? Every decision we make, is a consequence of the state of the particles that make up our brains and our reality, and those particles themselves are a consequence of the functions of the past?Or, if true randomness is indeed possible in particle physics, doesn't that break the foundation of repeatability in science? 'Everything is caused by something, and that something can be repeated and understood' <-- wouldn't this no longer be true?

Is there an chrome extension that skips boring parts in tv shows?

Sometimes shows can get boring/dry. Take Breaking Bad for example. It's a great show, but I'd love to just skip the family drama parts, especially the ones with Skyler. I could give countless other examples, but the general idea is to skip the "filler" parts.Is there a something out there that does this?

He works winters in Australia and summers in the NWT. He’s the one who pays for our Netflix, but can’t access it. Everything now says “remind me” / unavailable

For some reason (mainly on my iPad) everything is not available and I have to restart the device or something idek, and eventually it works and my shows come back but sometimes it doesn’t work. Anyway it’s super annoying when I can’t watch a show I was just watching and then not a single thing is available when I try to put something on as a replacement

ELI5: Why doesn't 'what will happen if the deficit keeps increasing every year?' have an objective answer?

Like if I said we'll end 2025 with about a $2 trillion deficit, and then I said it will increase by $500 billion every year.Why isn't there an objectively true answer as to what the impact will be 10 years from now? Why is there disagreement at all? Not like in the sense that there's probably one person who disagrees at what temperature water boils; But disagreement among experts as well as a political divide.

Q about Households

Hi, I pay for Netflix Premium, which includes 4 devices at the same time. (I never download stuff.) While it is super rare that we watch on even 2 devices simultaneously, I often have been traveling to my parents house (as they are elderly and I take turns caring for them), and I recently tried to login there. I updated my household to there because it prompted me to do so, but it kicked my husband out at our residence. It prompted him the same, but then it kicked me out. Is it not possible to watch on 2 different WiFi sources at the same time? Is there not a travel option? I swear there used to be, but again, I haven't been in this situation for many months. What do you suggest? Do I need a second email for my husband? Can I have 2 profiles on my account? Should I downgrade to Standard since I obviously don't make use of Premium? Thanks for your advice.

Six Triple Eight would have been better as a tv series than a movie.

It's surprising this idea was a move and not a series.This movie was such an important part of history there's definitely potential for a follow up series. Tyler Perry gave an interview and talked about Lena and Abram's story. It was surprising to hear that Lena and Abrams's story really happened. There's a prequel there somewhere. There's also room to hear how other women who served in the battalion came to the unit.

ELi5: How do construction piles work?

I know that on soft soil a building with a normal foundation would sink, and people would instead drive piles into the ground and then build on top of the piles. What I don't understand is how the piles stop the building from sinking, or for that matter, why wouldn't the piles keep on sinking into the soil anyway? Are the piles driven until they reach hard bedrock? If not, then how do they work?
