I'm just confused on how the army, navy, and air force have college football programs? Why do the marines not have one? How do these work? Are these future soldiers that are studying before taking military jobs? I'm just unsure.

Culinary Class Wars

Giving this the spoiler tag just in case anyone wants to talk about the ending. I just wanted to say it was a delight to watch Culinary Class Wars. The premise was great, there were some out there characters, some big names, some undiscovered talent, all thrown in to the same competition. As an American I enjoy watching shows that show me a glimpse into other countries. I was rooting for some, thought some were a little cocky, but loved them for it. Having so many different personalities really made the show great. The judges were fair and entertaining. The food is completely out of my league but I felt like I learned a bit watching. Ultimately what put this show over the top for me, was the respect I saw each chef show one another and the passion in their work. The way they spoke about their work, their restaurants and their customers. It was beautiful to watch them come up with unique dishes, full of passion. The cherry on top were the closing words. They really moved me with the final interviews, especially the man who said he’s “been cooking non stop with no days off and I guess in a way, you could say this was proof I ever existed”. So a well done to editing and the film crew as well.

Why YSK: most people have up on math during school because it's quite boring and the way it's taught doesn't highlight how useful it can be, but it turns out there are a lot of real life applications where knowing how to do some basic calculations is fairly useful. Almost every calculator has 10 buttons that are labeled 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.Most people seem to think its some form of alphabet and that their main use is to write silly words upside down (most famously BOOBIES, LOL, HELLO...), but they actually allow you to do much more.You can use them in combination with the +, -, x, / and ( ) buttons to do advanced calculations, for instance adding the prices of all your subscription services to get an idea of how much it costs per month, or even multiply that by 12 to get the yearly cost (because there are 12 months in a year) to help you budget your expenses. This is a first step towards financial responsibility, but that could be the subject of an entire post on its own.It can also be used to get the answer to some quite intense philosophical questions, like the famous 6/2(1+2). Having this knowledge allows you to enlight all the people giving the wrong answer on that viral post, which is quite necessary.To leave you with one final piece of advice, I'll end this YSK with a warning that calculators (even on smartphones) don't have autocorrect so you should be extra careful when typing numbers and always double check your input if you want to be sure the result you get is in fact the one you were looking for.

Why can’t we have neatly wrapped up seasons?

Surely Netflix is self aware enough to know that they often cancel shows after a season, so why do they greenlight seasons that end in cliffhangers?If they got shows to wrap up nicely they would at least have content someone would want to watch in the future, but if they know/think it will end unresolved, they are less likely to watch.You are spending so much money to make something, why not make something that could find future audiences, good content for their platform.There is also nothing wrong with shows having short runs, I love a miniseries I can get through in a week or bingey weekend, just getting a little taste for a world, provided it has a nice ending to wrap it up.Finally, say they do renew the show, the writers can figure out a new story in that world, maybe it follows a side character, or some new thing shows up. Honestly shows are kind of better for that, as after a year I’ll have forgotten the cliffhanger, and more just remember the way I felt about the show overall.Come on Netflix. Get it together, I canceled my sub, and just caught Kaos before it expired. That show had me thinking I would come back for it’s second season, and catch up on what dropped since then, but now I think I’m done unless they start doing cliffhanger-less seasons. Can’t take getting invested just to get crushed, Kaos felt like the last straw for me.

I feel shows should get the hint..

At this point and I might get flamed for this, but I feel shows should finish their storylines like a season 2 isn't happening or at least don't leave major questions unfinished.Dead boy detective which I found to be pretty good ended the major storyline thus after not being renewed I feel pretty okay. But shows like Archive 81 just left on a cliffhanger when they could have ended it.

Why Doesn't Netflix Let Us Choose Our Streaming Quality?

Has anyone else wondered why Netflix doesn't give us the option to manually select the quality of what we're watching? It's really frustrating when we pay for a specific plan, like 4K streaming, but we're just expected to trust that everything is streaming in 4K without any real way to verify it.Sure, Netflix adjusts based on internet speed, but why not give us the option to force it to stream at a particular quality? Sometimes, the image looks less than 4K even when my internet is perfectly fine. For the price we pay, I feel like there should be more transparency.It’s even more annoying when it comes to downloads. Has anyone else noticed that the quality of "high quality" downloads still looks subpar? I’ve tried downloading movies and shows for offline viewing, and despite selecting the highest available quality, the video still appears blurry or pixelated, nowhere near what you'd expect from 4K.We’re paying extra for premium quality, and it feels like we’re just being told to trust the system, even though we can’t see any real proof that we’re actually getting what we paid for. This should definitely be something Netflix addresses. Giving users the option to select their quality manually would be a huge step in the right direction. It’s not just about paying more—it’s about actually delivering the experience we’re paying for. What do you all think?

ELI5: Why does the addition of a lamp make the room cozier?

Just bought a $15 lamp, and after turning it on with it on my computer desk, my whole room feels cozier and just more like home. I think an overhead light, even with the same brightness and temperature will not have the same effect.It really feels like magic that one additional item in a room can instantly make the room seem more comfortable and friendly. What's the psychological reason behind this?

ELI5: Why do victims of violent crimes have to testify in front of their attacker?

I watch a lot of true crime shows and there appears to be a lot of cases where victims decide not to follow through with testifying against their attackers, merely because of their fear of being in the room with them. This seems to be particularly common in cases of sexual assault. Can’t they just not have the accused attacker not appear in court when the victim testifies?

ELI5 Why have 401Ks replaced pensions?

These days, very few people get guaranteed pensions and they are almost always 401ks instead.If you are running a business, isn’t it cheaper to provide pensions? You can invest the money in the same sort of funds that a 401k is invested in, but money not paid out (say, both retiree and spouse die) can be pocketed where 401k goes to whoever is a beneficiary like kids, extended family, charities, pets, etc).

Anyone else’s movies/shows disappearing?

Lately I’ve noticed movies I watch but don’t finish disappear from the ‘continue watching’ section. I am on mobile Netflix, using an iPhone 12 Pro(if that matters?)This has happened 2 times now. I start watching a movie, pause it and turn the app off, then I come back later(sometimes even the same day) to finish it and the movie isn’t in the continue watching section anymore. So I have to type the title in search to find it. It just happened again. Last night I paused a movie before bed, turned off the app(meaning I swiped it away), then today I went into the Netflix app and the movie was gone from the ‘continue watching’ section. I know the movie didn’t just continue playing because I paused the movie before exiting the app. Also, when I find the movie again and go to watch it the movie starts where I paused it. So I’m guessing this is a bug? If anyone knows how to report bugs directly to Netflix let me know please but is anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advanced.

Netflix Dialog Audio

I've been having audio issues for so long with Netflix. The dialog is so quiet, I have to turn it way up to be able to hear a single word being said and then I get jumpscared by someone casually opening a door or something in the movie/show because everything else is so loud. I'm on PC. I've used headphones, earbuds, speakers, all of pretty high quality. All the same.I have almost every streaming service that I consistently use and none of them have this issue except for Netflix.I've resorted to using sound apps on my computer, most recently Steelseries GG and boosting the voice there but I'm not super knowledgeable on how to get the perfect mix. I still have to keep adjusting while watching. And I usually just watch it low volume with subtitles if I can't find what I wanna watch on a different site. Anyone else having this issue? Ideas for fix? Or is Netflix doomed for me because watching stuff on there is becoming a chore.
